428 Frua Forum / AC 428 owners experience?
« on: November 16, 2007, 19:35:03 »
Chuck, whilst 'variety is the spice of life' is a favourite phrase of mine,  sorry Chev lovers.. of course any AC or Shelby clone must have Fo Mo Co power..!

I feel that when we start to consider the interior trim for our AC 428 Mk2, there could be plenty of diversity as to; colors, seating for various sizes of pilot.. instrumentation, equipment, BUT.. any credible sports/GT should conform to this runt's insistence that ONLY REAL HIDE will do; I also like the fluted hide headlining as used in some old Ferraris (and some old airplane cockpits too..)

I go along with those sentiments Chuck, interestingly a swing in the 'kit car' scene over here shows a renewed demand for the FE motor in 427 replicas, many avoiding the cost of a 427 side oiler by using the visually similar 390 FE with a stroked crank and of course the ally heads saving LBS in weight, as said massive potential in these leviathans!

Chuck, I agree with Clifford as to the badge, and as for the lamps, these were of course fashionable addenda on all kinds of GT and sports cars of the 'sixties/seventies period, personally, I would say aesthetically the car is not improved by them, but.. as CF 7 is a historically significant factory demonstrator, I would fit a new set of that type (available in the U.K. as mentioned) and go for driving lamps; jmho!

The bumpers, others on here better qualified than I may suggest a source.

Definitely Nik, that engine must be spectacular, amusingly a friend of mine admonished me for referring to a 289 as a '289 Windsor' years ago, me grouping them as a  Small Block family; "The 289 was built at Cleveland..!"

Hi Chuck, that's cool, and knowing it brings pleasure will be payment enough! That car is of course a legend, and a faithful ambassador for AC in the early sixties, really fired my imagination as a youngster, good to know it is in the rudest of good health!

Number 3 exhaust valve on the left bank sounded a bit tappetty as I recall! [;)]
Can you believe I used to sleep in the paddock whilst my Dad was tuning up?! It wouldn`t happen now!

Dad disconnected the red button marked 'EJ' on the gearknob just after this photo was taken!

Good stuff,it's great to see these shots of the car through the years; I wonder how many times it has been re painted for instance, didn't realise the chassis had been changed, looks like the valve covers are recent, how did the 'Hawk' recreation come about, did Gerry Hawkridge approach the then owner?

Chuck, this monthly 'Octane' is a nice publication with Carroll Shelby, Jay Leno and Nick Mason(Pink Floyd drummer) regular columnists, some mouthwatering classics featured and excellent photography, as Nik says 39 PH is a piece of history, a wonderful old racing 289 and the first Cobra I ever saw racing; watching the old black and white tv at my Grandmother's; I would have been about eight or nine and that Ford V-8 sound made a hell of an impression..!

Perhaps I can send a copy over to you.

I would appreciate it Paul, if you would pick me up a spare copy.  I'll PayPal you the funds necessary to post it to me...

Thanks as ever Chuck, I have this Autocar in my attic also, and as you say, we may even have been rival bidders on Evil Bay..!

Some wonderful sports cars there, loved Keith Judd's demo of the softer coil/wishbone suspension!

My faves are all here; AC 289 and 428, Aston DB6, 4.2 XKE, Interceptor, Tiger 289, great stuff, when those guys worked it was shirt and tie even in midsummer; gentlemen reporters indeed!

On the other hand whilst as Runt said earlier it ought to be on a low volume basis with orders up front to begin with, what sort of price and what sort of market and competition it might be up against is another question altogether as I've no idea at all.... ?

You know Cass, what appeals here is that: I don't think there would be any perceived 'competition', as the 428 has such a strong following amongst those who've seen the light, so many 'kit' Cobra owners will tell you; "Just LOVED the Frua, stunning cars, shame they're out of reach.."

Thanks A Snake; great to know that all these legendary old warhorses survive, you have to respect anyone who could drive a 427 at racing speeds and finish the race unscathed.
