Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Rear Suspension
« on: November 10, 2014, 15:55:24 »
Hi Max, many thanks for your information! The lower fulcrum pin on my Ace's rear n/s suspension has a small amount of play in it - enough to get an advisory in the MOT. I suspect that the pin is specially made along with the bushes. Could be interesting! Regards, Patrick.

The hub carriers are magnesium, so likely to be made specially for the Ace. Couldn't decide what type of bearing are use in lower fulcrums. I had expected to see tapered roller, but they appear to be needle rollers or bushes. However, wear wasn't my reason for removing the hubs, so didn't investigate further.

Several points that might be of assistance - a) nearside hub retaining nut has left hand thread b) puller is needed to separate hub from stub axle c) the hubs are a tight fit on the lower wishbones - I made a spreader to spring the lugs apart sufficiently to slide the hubs back on.

I've checked in the Granada Scorpio workshop manual and although there are some Scorpio bits such as the brakes and the drive shafts, it looks like the hub unit is a special part from sources unknown. I'm trying to get hold of the rear outer top and bottom fulcrum pins and bushes due to some play appearing on the lower nearside one. Any new ideas gratefully received! Maybe it'll come to having them made up specially.......

I have not seen any to check, just going by the photos.

Well spotted! They certainly look the right sort - diameter would be the clincher. Since I posted the request about the wheel centres, I've had a set turned from solid aluminium. They look great on the car but need the AC logo to finish them off properly. I'm now trying to find a firm able to make them - it's possible that Azev might be able to help on that one!

Many thanks for coming back to me on this one! As with the reply above, I think I'll leave any probings till after Christmas, if it ever stops raining that is! I'll try and get a photo on as well to see if there is any similarity.

Do you have any pictures of the assembly? I did wonder if they are similar to the CRS where there is a rose joint assembly on a tube with make up nuts on each side & a fat oring. This then presses in between the lug with a bolt through it.

May be completely different hence a picture request.

Yet another job still to do Max! It's so darned cold at the moment that I think any action is going to take place after Christmas, hopefully when it's a dry day! I'll let you know how I get on.....

When we last spoke you weren’t aware the hood ECU had LED lights. If they’re not illuminated with ignition on you have a basic lack of supply to hood circuitry. With ignition and handbrake applied do the windows drop when you operate the dash switch? If not, it could be something as simple as handbrake micro switch malfunction.

Hi Max,
Many thanks for your reply to the bearing problem. I'll take a look at it over the next couple of weeks and see what I can find. Hood's still not working - given up on that one now! And yesterday, one of the boonnet hinges snapped but hopefully a good dollop of weld should do the job.....
Have a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year!
   Kind regards, Patrick.

All,

Just to let you know I have been doing quite a bit of research and have new information on Ac Ace Brooklands and the three Aceca Brooklands. I want to send an article soon to Action. But if you can send me updates on ownership, etc. that would be great. I will publish the latest register. Also if you own a South Africa Ace let me know I have some of the factory records for the car as well.

Hi Max,
I didn't know that the ECU had any LEDs!! I take it that you mean the unit that's located in the boot next to the valve/solenoid unit? If that is what you mean, I'll have a look when it stops raining.
You're not kidding when you say the oil is expensive! And I bet it'll turn out to be something cheap like trolley jack fluid.....

Patrick. With the ignition on do any of the LED's on the ecu light up? On mine, with ignition on (but before operating dash switch) two reds and three greens illuminate.

   Oil's not cheap - £15.28 for 125 ml bottle.[:(]

Hi Max,
No, haven't sorted the hood out yet but the wiring diagram was quite useful in spite of it lacking any sort of colour coding! I've been sorting out bonnet locks and loose quarter-lights in the meantime, plus the serpentine belt. That WAS an interesting one! I didn't really make a note of its path when I took the old one off so had a very interesting hour or so trying to work out its correct path. Sometimes the belt appeared too long, then too short, but, get the right route and it fits like a glove. I lost a wheel centre some time ago and have turned up with a firm that will make me a set of new ones in CNC machined aluminium. The plastic centres tend to crack around the fixing set screw and no amount of super glueing seems to solve the problem. Thanks for the Peugeot fluid reference - that will help a great deal. I'm still convinced that there's a relay or two involved in the poor hood operation - where the heck they are though is anybody's guess! Anyway, good to hear from you again! If I solve the problem, you'll be the first to know!

   Kind regards, Patrick.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / A couple of questions
« on: June 06, 2012, 19:53:17 »
If you've got the Ford 302 engine, there's a timing chain, rather than a belt. If you are thinking of the serpentine belt that's located at the front of the engine and powers the aircon, power steering etc, go to www.realsteel.com or give them a ring on 01895 440 505. They are absolutely brilliant for all engine parts for the ford engines. You can download a two-part parts list for the Ford 302 from their website. Good luck!

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / A couple of questions
« on: May 18, 2012, 15:04:39 »
Ah! Looks like you've got me on that one! The steering column plastic bush in the bulkhead is a Sierra one, and the stalks on the steering column are Granada, so, could be one or the other. Luckily Ford stamp everything with a code which tells you the model, part number and year, for example, 92GG 17C499 BA, which is for the wiper relay. The 92 stands for the year, the GG is for Granada and the remaining bit is the part code. A Fiesta electric window switch is 91AG 14529 AC. The Ace uses quite a lot of Ford parts so there's a good chance that the rack originated from Ford. The tricky bit is that many of the parts have been given new part numbers - a Ford dealer will be able to check for you on their computer parts list. What is your chassis number? Mine is DE 1034 which is car number 34 of the production run. Later cars can have different parts fitted when compared to the earlier ones just to make it a bit more interesting!
