15" tyres that are not Avon CR6ZZ
« on: May 21, 2019, 16:19:17 »
Is anyone using other tyres (than Avon CR6ZZ) on 15" rims (7.5 & 9.5J ) on their MkIV or CRS?

The Avons are getting very expensive   (Circa £300 for a front 245/60/15 and £360 for 275/55/15 rears)- so about £1320 for a set and they come with half the tread missing.

Alternately suggestion for a source of competitively priced Avons if such a place exists. Its a shame Blockley dont offer some competition.

I know the Avons are the choice of many but I did see these in the link below so wonder if anyone has them and can comment on suitability/performance in wet/dry?  :

I recall a bad experience on the 16" version on my original set on a CRS but they were 12 years old and rock hard and the car does not have the weight to effectively use them -what I dont have is experience on new ones and they must have been ok as AC put them on the new cars.

I've had Cooper Cobra Radials on my Superformance 427 Cobra for several years now and am quite happy with them for ordinary street use. They are nearly identical to the Mickey Thompson Sportsman ST.

Cooper Tires makes all three brands: Cooper, Mickey Thompson and Avon.

I had Cooper Cobras on my Hawk FiA when purchased.
‘Orrible!
Don’t know if they were getting old,  but despite the fact they were a M&S tread, they had little grip.

After a puncture en-route to Silverstone, I was very kindly given a pair of (very) used Dunlop Racings, to which I added the front pair later. Looked FAB, but horrid on the road (cross plys) and also not quite legal...
So now I’m on CR6ZZs... love ‘em, but, I’m Driving Miss Daisy to make them last!

Just a suggestion:

Tyre can be fitted with lettering on the inside of the wheel if needed.

If you convince Avon that you are a genuine Motorsport competitor, you will get a racers discount. Go through the Motorsport section, buy the tyres, have them fitted locally.  There is no other tyre, unless the weather is always warm and the road dry.
Quite frankly Avon need our support. I they stop production, we will have to rely on tyres we can’t.

Search for Vitour tires and look for available sizes, for example the 275/60 R15.

If you can accept the modern tread style they are maybe worth a try.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Sounding grim/expensive if you want to stay on 15" rims.

Are Avon in financial trouble as thats whats implied AC Ventura?

The irony is they are owned by Cooper whose tyre I was originally asking about.

Does anyone know where the CR6ZZ is made (on sidewall?).

The bottom line is none of us (or I dont) really know the margin Avon make on the the CR6ZZ--do they make a loss or a big profit. It will be volume related and I dont know the market size /units sold/year.

It seems they need our support and in return we need fair pricing. The issue is the pricing may be fair but it feels like a rip off.

Hey, I wasn’t alluding that Avon are in trouble. I’m saying that  if they stop making this low volume size, we won’t have a drivers tyre to pick, only a poseurs tyre like the Goodyear Billboard, that looks great, but everyone says is no comparison to the Avon. Even our American friends....

New to forum....

My car#85 has the 16", want to add the sunburst 15".  Appears the backspacing is different on the wheel so I assume I'll have issues with the muffler?
Anyone have that experience?

Also, Avon's are great however I've always had great luck with Billboards...  I have had three sets and never had tracking issues, think it may be related to alignment...  Have them on both 427 car and a 289 car (buggy spring)

I recently put Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T P235/60R15 on the front 7.5 X 15 Cobra II wheels and P255/60R15 on the rear 9.5 X 15 Cobra2 wheels.  The new M/T tires replaced Dunlop G/T Qualifier P235/60 R 15 (front) and Dunlop G/T Qualifier P295/50 R 15 (rear) that was on the car.  My Mk IV has the original muffler in the wheel well and the 295’s where way too wide.  M/T’s do come in a 275/60, but I was concerned it may still be too wide, and its diameter is 1 inch larger than the 255/60 tire.  Thus, I went with the 255/60 on the 9.5 X 15 wheel, and IMO it looks just right.  I drive spiritedly on mostly country roads at speeds under 60 mph, and the tires feel and handle great.  The price in the states for 4 tires (on sale) is about the same as one Avon.

My plan as we start into winter is to take the front wheels off my 289 car (15" FIA's with Goodyear Power Cushion) and look at the space in the rear particular to muffler.

If this looks kosher, I will switch to 15" Sunbursts using Blue Dot or Power Cushion bias tires.  Bias = Yes!

Why Bias?
The story about the initial track testing of the AC MKIV was that Bob Bondurant (Ford's driver of choice) drove the MKIV with the 16" wheels using Gatorback's and could not keep it on the track.  Later testing, after consult with the original designer of the 60's frame, was that the chassis and car benefit from 15" (higher aspect ratio sidewall) as a better choice as the initial frame and design of the car itself used the interaction of chassis and tire for ultimate handling.  So in a nutshell, for the street its of no matter, 15" wheels using higher aspect ratio and even bias tires benefit the handling according to initial internal Ford testing. Once they switched to the 15's in the Ford testing Bob said, the car has been fixed and it tracked perfectly.  Who knew?

Fun facts we all want to know...…

Also will give a cool street car look to the stance of the car..... Jeff

I like the look of Garys Sunburst wheels on the street cars but they are still a bit too expensive for me.
