428 Engine Oil Usage

CF 24 uses a lot of oil .  It does not seem to burn or leak it .
   
   Engine rebuilt only 12k miles ago .
   It has high presure pump , with starting pressure over 100 lbs per aq inch , running at 65/70 lbs .
   
   Using 20/50 oil . I think it had new sump made - not sure why and wonder if it is being over filled .
   
   Any suggestions.

   Have three no idea how old pics on the 428 Register (click on URL at bottom) of CF 24 in red with Reg. Nos. MNB 681 G besides the LCD 1 pic. below. Is she still the same colour, and is there any other current info. you might care to share as well ?

   Yes , that is the car . It is still in lovely condition and is exactly the same , having only done about 12k miles since its restoration .
   
   It was at the Le Mans classic last week end and I took a few photos , but , being a bit of a luddite , I have no idea how to attach a photo to the site . However , if you would like me to send a few I will do so if I can have your direct email address.

   I would look at the oil pump spring, the rule of thumb for an FE is 10Lbs per 1,000rpm. However, your oil pressure 0f 65/70 lbs seems alright for a hot running engine. 100lbs is too high and you might want to play with the oil relief spring. I would connect a manual gage just to make sure. Run a compression test and a compression leakage test, How do you drive the car? it could be that the rings are not seated properly. Also, maybe you might want to look at the PCV valve and make sure it operates properly.

Local garage believe that oil is being lost from an oil seal at the rear of engine .
   
   It therefore seems that the engine will have to come out !!!!
   
   Whilst at it ,I was considering changing the gearbox from auto to manual .  Antbody any idea of how big this job is , and what it may cost?

I am presently doing this change (see CF9 folder) and Emmanueld has done it and posted a lot of usefull pictures on this forum.
   The manual box fits perfectly in the place of the automatic.  As the full convertion is not done yet, I cannot further comment. On my car, the dismatling of the full rear transmission axle revealed that, beyond the seals, nearly every piece (bearings and gears) had to be changed because of wear.

   I hope you changed the rear ratio while you had the rear end apart, this is the time to do it! The factory ratio for the manual Frua is 3.08

Even with a wide ratio toploader ? I thought that this combionation with the 2,88 ratio and the low end torque of the 427 might be a good fit.

With a .81 top gear & 2.88 rear, you are (theoretically) a member of the 200MPH club @ 6000rpm! [8D]

It's alright, but the car would be happier with a slightly shorter rear end, you have to use the clutch a bit too much at take off. This why AC chose the 3.08 on it's manual Frua, I think.
