Radiator Grill
« on: October 11, 2017, 12:51:46 »
I am about to embark on a light restoration of AEX443 and am missing an original radiator grill. I wondered if anybody has one they would be prepared to part with. I would prefer an aluminium one over brass bur beggars can't be choosers.

Hello Luke,

Correct grill for your '58 car would have been the chrome on brass item. IMO it looks far more handsome than the (admittedly lighter) aluminium version that came along somewhere in 1959. The chrome on brass grills are expensive to restore, but (again IMO!) worth it in the end.

Should your car have a chrome on brass grill, and if it will be surplus to requirements after you have secured an ali grill, then I'd be keen to buy it please! Tim

Sorry Tim but i do not have a grill and am looking for an original one myself. I do not really want a reproduction one from Gerry and am asking if anyone is prepared to part with an original one ?

I've had a lot to do with both types, ones a joy and the other isn't!

The standard aluminium one is a joy, the brass one isn't.

I would be happy with brass or aluminium but would like to stay original rather than a reproduction. I was hoping for a bit more positive feedback so I encourage all of you to get out into the garage or workshop and have a good rummage around for me.........
Enjoy the weekend one and all,

Hello,
Personally I dont think that a 58 car had the chrome grill because I have owned a 58 Ace which had an original alloy grill.
What I do have spare is an original chrome/brass taken from the first Aceca wpl 740  ae 501 which is undamaged good condition, will not need a rechrome ,can be unscrewed for a good clean  and has hung on my garage wall from when I purchased the car in 1984.
I also have a spare good but slightly damaged alloy grill which will need the round tubes replacing, taken from my 1959 Aceca 10 KPH
If any interest then contact me Tony North Cheshire

Interesting discussion - so would a '56 Ace have a chrome-on brass grill, or a polished alloy only grill?

BEX333,  Has the same Chrome on Brass grill as when built and despatched from Thames Ditton on  18th August 1957.
Not 100% sure,  but believe  The Aluminium Grill became standard issue during 1959 [?]
