New Tires
« on: September 29, 2013, 11:50:47 »
Gentlemen, because of steering wheel vibrations I recently visited the tire specialist for balancing, however, I learnt the the front tires have a flattening due to long standing. So, I need an new pair of front tires 225/60R15. Currently front and rear tires are Avon CR6ZZ an they are 2 years old and around 1500 miles. The prices for such tires here in Germany are currently unbelievable. Any recommendation where to order in UK?

By the way, I heard that the Avon tires are the best for Cobras. However, what about the nice-looking Good Year Eagle with big white letters you often see on old pictures. Some of the Shelby Cobras are delivered with those tires. I assume they are not register for Europe.

If you're thinking about the Goodyear "billboard" Cobra tires as in the photo below, you should note that those are bias-ply, non-street legal tires meant for track use primarily.  They look bloody FANTASTIC and are very sticky, but are expensive and would probably flat spot quicker than the Avon CR6ZZs did.

I wanted to buy these tyres with the Goodyear branding on them but was told I could buy them but on one could legally fit them (ie commercial companies) as they are not road legal tyres. You could probably get  someone to fit them saying they are for racing but if you get stopped by the police and they discover you are driving on racing tyres, not sure what the penalties may be.

the biggest drawback to me of the Billboard tyres is they are very strange to drive, following any groove in the tarmac, due to their structure... apart from not being road legal, indeed !

BMTR Birmingham have just received their latest new size Avon CR6ZZ 225/60 15 diameter is 25" rather than the Avon CR6ZZ 225/65 15 diameter is 26.65" which should reduce potential fouling of the GRP front inner wheel arch liner under extremes. The larger rear tyres 275/55 15" diameter is 26.9".

Prices are on the BMTR website http://www.bmtr.co.uk then click on Motorsport. Next day delivery for 4 tyres is £20 + VAT. If you phone them ask for the Motorsport department and ask for David or Peter. They are very helpful.

I just found a German race tire dealer (contact below), who offers Avon CR6ZZ 225/60 VR15 for 265,- Euro plus tax per tire. I think that is a fair price.
