Worm & Sector woes

Currently starting a finish restoration on an early series II. Owner's punch list includes lessening the steering effort, as he is getting on in years. Rumor had it at one time that there was actually a worm gear that would fit up and increase the lock to lock to over 2 turns. This route would be vastly simpler than the alternatives, and I throw this one out in hopes of some feedback.

   I'm not sure what you mean by "series II"? If you're referring to a MKII 289 Cobra, it would a rack and pinion car not a worm & sector.

The rack and pinion steering unit was sourced from MG. Power steering units are available. Try Moss Motors - one of the many suppliers of power units.

Car is one of the original 6 worm & sector MKII's delivered to Shelby. R & P box will not work due to location.

   Now you've lost me. The first 126 Cobras delivered to SAI were worm & sector. Referred to as MK I's (not in period of course) MKII's are rack & pinion cars beginning after those 126 W&S cars. (And again, they were not referred to as MKII's in period) The coil spring cars, at that time were referred to as MKII)
   
   Perhaps you meant to say one of the first six cars?

Although using a worm and sector car for twenty years (2042) I haven’t heard of different worms for the Bishop steering box. The Ace used the same box, and you might want to try a few Ace specialists.
   
   A-Snake’s terminology is absolutely correct. As a minor bit of history, an AC period advert for the coil-spring car called the leaf-spring model (all 654 cars) the Mk I.

My mistake...the car is one of the original six, and indeed is a MKI.
