new guy looking for parts help !
« on: May 29, 2011, 19:57:50 »
Hi guys,
I have a early 1962 cobra with a 260 ci engine I have had for 30 plus years which was badly crashed in the 60's..... I now am restoring the car back to original configuration.....I need to find the original ACE GAS CAP...Any ideas or leads would be great...
Also the rear kidney bean style wheels were destroyed...original were Halibrand knock off pin drive...my fronts are O.K. but need the wider rear wheels....
any help or leads would be great......thanks

Rick,
First of all welcome. As for the gas cap I have also been looking for one of those and the only thing I have found so far is the Norton Commando gas cap made by Ceandess. It is not exact as the button is ribbed and not smooth, and it it is only the cap portion, not the body. If you do a search on Ceandess-Norton-Commando, you should be able to find a pic. There is a guy in New Hampshire (Nick Acton) that has said he is working on remaking them, but as of about 6 months ago he did not have a finished product. I'll see if I can find contact info for him. If someone other than me contacts him about needing one, maybe he will move it up on the priority list.

Rick &  Jay

Quickly scanned through a old  Europa specialist spares catalogue and notice they have a range of Monza Style fuel caps.
   visit:

   www.europaspares.com

   email:  info@europaspares.com
( You might have to email as I couldn't find PCH2L in their latest catalogue )

Check out  part number PCH2L .. Hinged petrol cap locking, measuring  105mm long by 76mm wide, height of cap from under the tube 25mm.
Length of tube 110mm by 52mm dia.
   RG2 ( Body grommit 2"ID)....[;)]

Not 100% correct, However it looks almost identical bar the fact that it has a built in key lock and a ribbed pattern on the push to release.

Keith,
Given that Ceandess (pronounced C and E) supplied AC with fuel filler caps back in the 50's and 60's, and that Ceandess remains a viable operation on Dixon street in Wolverhampton, still making fuel fill caps, with Director/Sales Manager Peter Killey available at 01902 872000 and on the net at: peter.killey at ceandess.co.uk
Would it be possible to just ring up Mr. Killey, and make a pitch for Ceandess, as the original British designer and supplier, to reissue authentic keyhole fuel caps?  Besides the market of AC owners interested in maintaining the authenticity of their increasingly valuable cars, dare we mention the sales potential  among the horde of worldwide replica owners? (Consider how many sets of those sand cast aluminum AC embossed clutch and brake pedals have been sold.)

Beyond these arguments for a reissue,  an invitation for Mr. Killey to experience some hot laps 'round Donington in a vehicle bearing his product, with attendant PR coverage, might be persuasive too.

Jay, looked at Norton Commando and Triumph bike sites, they don't have the keyhole style replacement cap available, just the ridged square button similar model, made in UK by Ceandess, for a very reasonable $95.    Thank you for your valued input  ...........

Away for the next four day's  " Barry and Amy's Wedding ".

Will arrange to phone and call in at C and E to discuss availablity of authentic  100% genuine Fuel Caps, subject to negoiations price and quantities. [?]etc.
May propose ACOC invest some club funds and have a batch specially run off to satisfy Ace, Aceca and early Cobra owners.

Art and Keith,
Excellent idea and effort. I hope it works out as the person who was working on the reproductions, is still working on them and has no expected completion dates.

Dont mean to steal your thunder..[:(]
But as the original manufacturer is with one and a half hours drive it makes sense to enquire of possibility to remanufacture  a small batch.
Assuming they still have the tooling. or  maybe some  NOS (New Old Stock)..[:p]

Will follow up next week upon return from Devon.... keep you posted.

Rick ,Jay, Art & all seeking correct Fuel Filler Cap

Had a meeting with  Peter Killey (MD) and a colleague  Chris.

Outcome,  C and S no longer make exact copy of filler cap, however they are prepared to either cast a copy or modify the press release on the Norton Commando Filler minus the locking devise. ( believe similar to BSA fuel filler ) ..[?]

Have arranged meeting for next week where Peter and Chris will check measurements of the filler cap off BEX333 and discuss price for small run.  I'm not prepared to leave my one and only correct fuel filler cap with  C&S, as I will be using BEX333, has any one in UK a spare correct unit I could borrow for aweek or two..[?]

If we can group together say order for a dozen or so units price could be in region of £45.00 / £50.00 per unit or lower for exact copy.( subject to quatity )

Any one interested please respond ASAP and pass word around.  The budget Price ex works P&P plus vat additional...I  will sit down and negoiate  Firm price once I have Idea of quantity, However  If little or no response then I will ask for price of equivelent unit minus key lock and without the serrated grooved  release button.  These would be correct shape and size but with rectangular release instead of keyhole shape release.

C and S still hold spares of the  seal / anti splash back internals which fit to underside of our Ace, Aceca and early Cobra filler cap. £s or $s ...per set..[?]

Will discusss price and quantity break points.  Again any body interested please confirm ASAP. on this Forum or on my email.

Meeting planned for Thursday next week...

Great work Keith! I am in for 1 and possibly 2 if they make the original version. I'll also try to call Ron Leonard and see if he wants any. 1 question, I do not understand the comments on the seal/anti splash. Does that mean they are available, but will cost extra?

The Fuel Cap comes as a complete unit ready to fit to your Ace, Aceca & Cobra. ( If only you had a full set !)

The seal / antisplash back internal unit is available as a spare part, so if any one needs to renew the internal head section (under side of cap) then it can be purchased as a seperate item.

Will try to down load a photo or two.
   Please Refer to seperate Thread.
"New correct Ace,Aceca, Greyhound & Cobra Fuel Caps"
   to monitor potential orders.

   Thank you
