DRIVERS REAR HUB/SPLINE SLIGHT WOBBLE
« on: April 06, 2022, 11:02:00 »
Well I resealed the rear, new u joints on half shafts but on my 1960 Aceca
After greasing and all my drivers/left side hub , click/wobbles a HAIR. The other side is perfect. Someone PUT new shafts in but it feels like a bearing wobble as if the hub nut can be a bit tighterbut I cant tighten any more.
Suggestions?
Can I take off the center nut and just PULL the splines towards me?
Maybe the bearing isnt seated?

It sounds like play in the bearing but could also be wear in the upright, on the OD of the inner bearing.
The only way to know for sure what's going on is to remove the hub, half shaft & bearings.
It's now seems difficult to find new rear hub bearings that don't have a small amount of axial play.
A friend of mine recently had to go through several brands of bearing before finding an acceptable pair.
Although all the bearings were specified to be of the same internal clearance, in reality they all showed different degrees of play.

Thats where Im heading,
Looks like the axles are replaced but a lock nut and cotter pin.
I have it apart in 10 mintes.
To pull the hub once the nut is removed , you just YANK it? and it will come to you or do a need a puller>
Thanks in advance.

You'll need a hub puller to separate the hub from the shaft.
This can take a considerable amount of force, depending on how well or not the taper on shaft is mated to the hub.
I use this style of puller.[url]https://www.orsonequipment.co.uk/product/hub-puller-type-42-8-tpi-k021-8//url]

Ball Races do have classifications particularly deep groove types used on the hubs!

Hi Robin.
The variations within the different classifications is what I was getting at.
For example nowadays if you take two C2 class bearings from different manufacturers one may have more play than the other.
like many other items now, you have to be very careful when selecting components. it's not something that happened in the past
when using good quality bearings like SKF or Koyo.

I agree with my last Etype build matched sets were a lot easier
But
Aston Martin the variables and time tables were all over the place
Once done it will be great

Well everyone was right........I had to REPULL  the shock, and move over the half shaft to get the center shaft out, the inner bearing was shot.
What a kookie setup. Jim F already mailed the bearings and seals......more to come.
Thanks everyone
