Question about 1957 AC Aceca Bristol body paint color ?
« on: January 25, 2021, 17:58:47 »
Good evening,

first of all thank you for my admission to your association, and I have a question for my AC Aceca Bristol 1957.
This car has historical pedegree in some rallies, among others the "Tour de France Automobile 1957,(number 151),
with two French amateurs rally pilot, the Marquis Alvar de Torcy owner to the AC and president to the famous
"Ecurie Le Mans",and GĂ©rard Aufauvre dixit "Gordon" co-pilote.

I am restorating in it's original body color, "metallic irise red" or "light maroon metallic P151-R840"
on the original AC factory swatch, but today this reference has no know equivalent.
Have you got a current reference for this specific color?

Thank you for your help, and looking forward to hearing from you soon,

best regards

Michel OSSARD

Hi Michel,
a search on " Colour code P151-R840" produces, amongst other posts, two links to two posts on clubcobra discussing the same issue:

Good luck /Paho

Michel,
please look at Christophs Aceca here: https://www.acownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2735.msg27111#msg27111
If this is the right colour you can ask him.

Michel.
What a great photo' I wonder where it was taken ? Perhaps the location still exists and you can take BEX 581 back there for another photo' once she is restored.
The whole question of A.C. colours is very difficult since Valentines lost their independence and disappeared. I have hoped for many years that their technical records would be found and perhaps be translated in to another companies formulation. However this has not happened, with the one exception of A.C. Racing Green/Jewelessence Mist Green and this only because of a great deal of trouble taken by John Deveson. So having the original paint code is sadly of no help. I think you will have to try and find some original paint surviving somewhere and match it. Bear in mind that modern electronic matching devices do not work accurately on nitro cellulose, so it's back to the Mk. I eyeball

Thanks for all your replies.
As I imagined, finding the current equivalent to Light Maroon Metallic and Metallic Irise Red is not that easy.

Thanks Paho for the Cobra threads, the colour is indeed what I am talking about.

dkp_cobra, I will get in touch with Christopher, his car is the right colour, so hopefully he can give me a modern reference for my bodybuilder that uses the PPG paint but can't find equivalent.

B.P. Bird, thanks for the kind words. The picture was taken during the Tour Auto '57, but unfortunately I have no confirmation on the exact location of that petrol station. It might be around Le Mans town as the car did laps on the circuit then. I will hopefully take it back to Le Mans once restoration is complete.

Hi Michel,
unfortunately, Christoph has some health problems and he asked me to post the information about the colour in his name. You can use colour from Glasurit (https://www.glasurit.com/en-int/). The colour code is: BMC (british motor corporal) RD8. It's not a metallic paint.
Also a non-metallic paint is SAAB 168 (https://www.autolack21-shop.de/saab-168-kastanienbrun-kastanienbraun-uni-2k-einschichtlack-1-ltr) which is nearly the same colour. Christoph's painter said that the SAAB 168 difference only in 3% from the original. And if you kids should paint your car they can use this little pencil (https://www.lackstift-shop.de/saab-168-kastanienbrun-kastanienbraun-uni-basislack-lackstift-20ml;)
Hope, this helps you,
Peter
