AC Weller Engine / Front oil seal, done in engine bay at last!
« on: March 10, 2016, 17:12:12 »
Well.

Having done my bit (I think) in assisting my dear wife by being dragged to the wallpaper shop to look at god knows how many pattern books and selecting samples, that are now bluetac'd around the bedroom to see what one we (she ) likes the best.

I did manage to get back down the garage, got the nose off, rad out and set about getting the dam front pulley of. Is it me or is it just plain daft that to get the fan belt off you have to take off the engine mount bolts to jack up the engine just to get space to slip it off the pulley's.

Anyway, having got better access I found that an old 'C' spanner, that I had lying around fitted into the holes located in the groove of the pulley. With trusty blowtorch and a can of freeze spray in hand, 'C' spanner in place, I heated the outside of the pulley and sprayed the inside of the pulley towards the thread, a sharp hit with the hammer on the 'C' spanner and it suddenly gave up it's grip and spun off. Back to the jack and raise the engine to clear the front cross-member the pulley came all the way off, (why AC did not just give enough space at the front for this is and getting the fan belt on/off is  beyond me).

Now, I can see the old seal and it is spinning in situ so the oil is escaping round the outside of the old metal seal. So off under the car down the  pit and undo all those sump bolts etc etc. Drop sump (nice and clean inside very little sludge in the deep part), pop old seal out, clean up mating surface, clean off old sump gasket, install new seal of the rubber type, as supplied by Rod Briggs, apply a smear of PU adhesive to outer edge of the seal and slip in to place. Fit new sump gasket, fit sump as so far, Bob's your uncle.

I have had a check on the flywheel rubber from the bottom of the flywheel housing and all look good so not taking the engine out to do them.

Might get down garage again tomorrow but sounds like I've got the go and assist in buying the 'Misty Sage' chalk based paint (oh and I've got to apply it to the wall with drips!!!).  Ho hum, maybe Saturday then and I'll have a clean up of the oil spray around the front and start to reassemble.

   Cheers  G

Hi  Musicman Thanks for that.  it is on the forum members profile bit but will send it anyway.

Have just sent it and wonder are you the author of the 2 litre book.  If so dam good read.  I used your adjustable timing wheel mod.  I also noted that  my pistons had cutouts in the top of them maybe the previous owner had also tightened the valve timing down as per your book in an early time.

Hi Martin

Did you ever fit the Triumph engine to the Buckland, as I have just become the owner of a triumph 6 with 0verdrive and will be considering this for a future fit if and when my AC lump gives up.

AC Weller Engine / Front oil seal, done in engine bay at last!

Had not thought of that, but I do seem to remember my dad doing that on a truck back in the 70's to undo something. Not sure I would go that route as keeping any muck/fibres etc out of bores would be difficult.

But no I am hoping to try to loosen  it with the engine still attached to car, now I have the front off and have  better access. I was thinking of re welding the bar onto it or a nut and using an impact wrench, heat and freeze spray.

Failing that maybe with engine out I can use a bar across the flywheel between the clutch bolts, I have done this before on other engines.

If all fails to release it I will carefully cut it off (last resort) and replace it with another or may make an alloy one as I have a couple of old fan pulleys here and could machine it out and thread it to suit, but wont know till other one off.

Let me see what Monday/Tuesday brings, unless wife catches me and wants to discuss/show me  chalk based paints colours.

   Cheers  Gary

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / 2 Litre Saloon 70th anniversary?
« on: March 05, 2016, 17:32:06 »
Hi Guys  cheers for the info. I do have a large collection of old Actions, which I think had a lot lot of Johns material in especially the racing ones.

Not sure How many actually exist as roadworthy cars I Know of 5 from contact on this site. But maybe owners could make themselves known.

I may go to the next council meeting in March and see if the council would support an anniversary for the 2 litre next year.

AC Weller Engine / Front oil seal, done in engine bay at last!

Hi Graham

No  not started yet forgot I promised wife a couple of days in France  on Friday to Sunday. Very nice break though. Although she started mentioning re-decorating the bedroom soon, so I had better get on with the engine before I get dragged of to look at William Morris wallpaper pattern books, Paint sample etc etc etc.

I thought dealing with this car/engine was hard work and taxing with nowt more than a simple AC handbook, but deciding whether the various shades of green paint patches that may end up on the wall best matches the carpet/wallpaper is the devils work.

So will be starting removing the engine this week. Down the garage with the radio and kettle pondering over what nut/bolts hold the nose section on, is there anything else I should check on whilst engine out, is there any painting of inner body work/chassis that needs doing (that part is easy its black).

I will take pics as I go along for my archive and if any use to anyone contemplating the same at some time will put them on here via a link.

Whoops! got to scarper she who has to be obeyed has just mentioned something about curtains/pelmets?????

   Cheers  Gary

General Forum / Why oh Why

Hi BE774

I can only apologise if you feel this post offensive.  However the fact is that the list is out of date, should be checked before it is printed and is a cost that is wasted putting it to print.

The coordinators, I am sure do a good job, and give of their time freely to our benefit. I know Steve does as I have dealt with him re spares before now. I am sure he would prefer members not calling him re items no longer held that are showing on the list.

It is  sad if one is not allowed to voice ones concerns over matters on this forum. I appreciate not every one will agree and some may/will take offense. However, we do live in a democracy and free world. Again I apologise if anyone takes offense but I feel my view was justified.

Hi Shep,  Whilst I would love to come to the meeting it is  a bit of a distance to travel. That said it may be worthwhile to do so in due course. I am more than happy to design a spreadsheet for the spares list and would be happy to discuss parameters for such with all involved.

   Cheers  Gary

Hi Admin  No AC ownership is great, I love the 'Ol Girl' and she always attracts people to chat with with.

Luke  cheers for that, I did try to pinch some of the back of a Cobra, but the 'Ol Girl'  could not keep up and the wife thought leaning out of the suicide door was a bit precarious for her!! Well, it was her idea for the belts I thought she could at least help out.

I did speak to Quickfit as the Ally Pally classic car show the man said he had never fitted them to an AC saloon, he suggested bracket welded on underneath somewhere.

Now if the wife does not come up with any other ideas I might be able to fiddle with improving performance ad tad, after all I have fitted some drop down chrome handles from I think a 1940/50's Daimler/Riley/Alvis to the doors as the little groove in the door top kept damaging her nail varnish when pulling the door to. Also she would like a vanity mirror on the sun blind, I suggested leaning out of the window and looking in the mirror would be ok, looks like vanity mirror is to come as well.

   Cheers all  Gary

Well been in the car rummaging about with a couple of old leather belts to see where a lap belt could be sited then under the car to see if any suitable location for one to be bolted to. Does not look to be a goer, I could make up a bit of box section to weld in under the floor to fit them but  for the amount of protection they would give does seem to justify the work and messing around with the chassis.

So I've decided to use a bungee cord around the neck and hook it to the something in the rear, that should work if the stretch is calculated correctly I should be able to stop before I hit the steering wheel and be pulled back into the seat on rebound. I wonder if someone would test it out for me? the wife is not keen.

AC Weller Engine / Exhaust Silencers?
« on: January 16, 2016, 09:25:42 »
Many thanks for info, however I am looking to improve the flow of the exhaust system. I have a couple of spare aux silencers on my shelf and a couple of original manifolds (one having been smoothed over to improve look), was going to use one to make a manifold flange but looks like mike may have already saved me the hassle.

As to the flow/pulse of the gasses I think the gasses exploding sideways and pulsing back so closed to what is a fairly restrictive manifold anyway does not help with free flowing exhaust. AC Aces use a free flow manifold which certainly improved performance in this respect.

This is a route that I will look at going if I can workout where to fit the down pipes in as the engine bay/ steering column is a bit tight for space. I believe that some owners have fitted them through the inner wing and run the pipe under the cat from there. Will need to research this.

   Cheers  Gary

AC Weller Engine / Exhaust Silencers?
« on: January 12, 2016, 17:20:27 »
Hi Mike

That sounds interesting, was thinking of similar lines re manifold plates but looking in engine bay not much room for free flow down pipes. Would be nice to pic of item and pipes. Will PM you re this and the starting handle.

AC Weller Engine / Cold air box and air filter for triple SU's
« on: January 09, 2016, 09:15:24 »
Hi  Graham

Yes had thought of cutting the original filters about to fit modern paper or K&N type inners to them but thought if at a later date someone wanted to fit the originals back on they would be ruined.

Also the fact remains that warm air is still being sucked in and a cooler air charge would produce a denser air fuel mix.

I know its not a racing car but any improvement must be beneficial.

I will be making other improvements in due course to the engine breathing as I go along like on the exhaust side of things as well.

   Cheers  G

AC Weller Engine / Cold air box and air filter for triple SU's
« on: January 08, 2016, 07:47:39 »
They are the original oil dipped wire mesh filters, poss flame traps but states filters in the handbook.

Bot main problem other than obvious poor filtration of dust is that they are in engine bay sucking in warm air, would get better performance etc by sucking in cool air as well as better filtration from a more modern K&N filter.

Cant find any modern filter types to fit 1 1/8 su as they are push on type not bolt on like on most su's.
