General Forum / Why oh Why

Hi.  Well I emailed Steve but no response so I guess my help not needed. Oh well no problem but would have been good to get all the spares listed properly, so people knew what was where and still available.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / 2 Litre Saloon 70th anniversary?
« on: April 02, 2016, 14:20:56 »
Hi Keith

Cheers,  I will indeed keep in contact. I hope the date and venue for next years National is known early enough, so as to allow holidays etc to be planned for those interested.

I am writing a bit for the 'My classic' for Classic and Sports Car Mag, and will be making sure that people know its the 70th next year.

Perhaps a drive out from the National next year could be a goer as well.

Oh and this morning just popped out to Rye in Sussex and was asked if my car was a Riley!!!!!! then when told it was an AC he asked if it was the original'COBRA' before the yanks go their hands on it. I did explain to the poor old chap that no it was not, he did not realise AC made anything other than COBRA's. Oh well another now the wiser about AC history.

   Cheers  Gary

« on: April 02, 2016, 10:14:06 »
Hi Many thanks to the Council and Mike etc etc.  I am sure that during the time from now until next year we can garner some support for as many 2 Litre saloons to be seen at next years National (wherever that may be).

I use my 2 litre almost daily around my locale here in Kent and for forages into Suffolk and France, The Ol' girl is always liked and attracts people attention, only the other day when up in Duxford to meet Karl who is deep into getting his 2 litre done and for me to collect some rear wings with spats etc. she attracted many comments whilst at the pub.

Anyway here's to next year  and remember if it were not for the 2 litre getting AC through the post war years we may never have had the Ace (very pretty) and Cobra (well each to their own).

   Cheers  Gary

Hi Andy

Is there much take up on this or is there just a general lack of enthusiasm on the part of members.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Wheels and tyres 2 litre saloon
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:24:09 »
Karl  try Vintage Tyres on 01590 612261  I got my 17 inchers for about £94 each  last year. They were Waymasters and very good tyres they are, very quiet running and hardly any screeching on cornering.

You could also go to 16inch Taxi tyres in 175/85x16 Radial as I did and do many Riley owners with 16 inch wheels often about £80 a pair, you would still need to use a tube and a good dusting of french chalk.

I used these on a 1952 Riley RME with V8 power at over 100mph for more than 7000 miles  on original Riley front wheels and no problems.

   Cheers  Gary

AC Weller Engine / Electronic ignition
« on: March 20, 2016, 14:40:22 »
Just an update on electronic ignition outcome.  Now done over 6 full tanks of fuel and by my calculations getting approx 26-28mpg depending on trip. Exhaust is showing cleaner burn and plugs all good, I did open the gap to 25 thou, I am using NGK B5HS plugs.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Girling 2 l/s front brakes
« on: March 20, 2016, 14:24:07 »
Hi Karl  I did look at Landrover ones as I did own a couple of the years but these only fitted the older single leading shoes brake setups.

Have you tried buying releasing fluid in a bottle and just dropping in it for a few days, worked on an Riley I had.

   Cheers  Gary

Hi Karl and anyone else in the same situation. There is a spares supplier near me MEV Spares that stocks the Austin A70 ones for the earlier car at approx £95 for the four, which I believe are the same as the AC ones. I am happy to visit and check them out for you. I may even get some my self.

   Cheers  Gary

Hi Karl

I beleive some austin a40/70 cylinders are the same as are some old tractor ones. The austin used some that are slightly different but looking at the later ones look as if they would fit as well, with a small adjustment to the backplate.

There is a girling listing on the interweb that shows all girling fittings but takes some time to trawl through.

I might be interested in the spats will pm you.

   Cheers  Gary

AC Weller Engine / Front oil seal, done in engine bay at last!
« on: March 17, 2016, 15:45:38 »
Here's a links to some pics of job being done, there are a lot of bolts that hold the nose cone on ans these were a bit corroded, replaced them all with stainless button top bolts for future proofing. You can see how tight the pulley is to the front cross-member in  some pics but all clear when jacked up by about 1 1/2 inches.  You can see the 'C' spanner in the groove, its an old Spax one.Yes made a mess of getting the starting handle pin out when I originally tried from underneath car, definitely easier when doing through the front. Old seal was actually spinning in the block, so the oil was leaking around the outside bit not the leather seal. New one is the more modern replacement type which I used so PU aircraft glue to secure to the sump and block.

   Well all good now.

Recent ACs / Coupe moulds
« on: March 15, 2016, 14:43:43 »
Now that is a pretty car, much smoother lined than the big (steroidal) Cobra, which in my mind is not particularly nice looking.

But this, with maybe a Lexus V8 on LPG and in a deep yellow, I would have anytime.

But as said earlier on beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

AC Weller Engine / Front oil seal, done in engine bay at last!
« on: March 14, 2016, 17:28:47 »
Cheers  Graham/Robin.

Managed to sort a fanbelt its a Gates v belt 13mmx11mmx875mm. Also got a spare.  I did see the fenner segmented belts but do not know anything about them, I am sure they are reliable but prefer a complete belt.

Anyway nearly 2 days to replace a £5 oil seal. Cant imagine what that would have cost at a garage. (did manage to clean up all the lost oil under the engine etc with parafin spray, looks nice under there now)

Fresh oil, fresh antifreeze and away we go, nice little test run of some 70 miles all good no leaks etc.

Now I've got to go shopping again with the wife as we (she) has narrowed down the choice of wallpaper to 3 and am allowed some input into which one we (she)  has.  Oh deep joy!

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Moss Rear axle for sale small fee.
« on: March 12, 2016, 07:42:15 »
hi david yes it is in the axle would be happy to split, i understand these are the same axle, but would not swear to it. I beleive AC carried the early axle over to the saloon before going to the ENV axle.  Best check it though.  Gary
