Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Ol Girls engine swap
« on: November 12, 2016, 19:27:03 »
Well as some of you may know the Ol Girls engine has suffered 2 scored bores from broken rings, so eventually I will rebuild it from scratch with new water jacket new liners etc etc (read expensive) but over time I may be able to source some bits a bit cheaper.

Now in the the meantime I have decided to swap the engine in the Ol Girl with a Triumph 6 and 4 speed OD unit, I have had this some time and was running well when last installed in a Ford Model B rod. However I have decided to rebuild it and it currently at the engineers getting a rebore +60, crank regrind, head converted to unleaded and a 30 thou skim, etc, I have sourced from Russ Carpenter racing a set of hepolite (NOS) balanced pistons (they used to use these in the Daimler 250 engines), Also sourced a Piper yellow 2ty camshaft, which should give me some 130 bhp and 150 ft lbs.

This should give the Ol Girl a new lease of life.

I am itching to get down the garage and get the old engine out of her but a knee replacement has slowed me down a bit but now getting around a bit better, so soon will be at it.

I will be selling some bits shortly such as an excellent Moss box I have is store, and quite possibly the one on the car at the moment as well also excellent. The carbs will go as well and as you may know these were fully rebuilt last December. I will also be getting rid of the dynamo also fully rebuilt. So if anyone wants any of these bits give me a shout.

Soon as I start I will take pics etc and give updates as to how it all goes.

   Cheers now  Gary

ACOC News and Events / National day 2017
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:14:22 »
Hi

Is there anyone who has an idea when this coming years National is going to be or where. It is the 2 Litres 70th anniversary and I would like to attend and even assist in organising in some way if needed.

It would be nice to have an idea of when as people including need to book holidays etc soon and don't want to clash.

It will spur me on to make sure the Ol Girls ready then as well.

   Cheers  Gary

AC Weller Engine / The Ol Girls engine swap.
« on: September 25, 2016, 10:44:06 »
Hi It seems the Ol Girls engine has finally decided it needs remedial work, she has been getting very smoky and running out of puff for a while now and seems to be getting worse. I borrowed a tiny camera thingy from a fried of mine and looked down the bores, it seems bore 6 has a 1/4 inch score  and bore 4 one of about 1/8 inch, so guessing brown piston rings, also I think the head needs a rebuild, worn guides, valve seat recession etc etc. I already know the water jacket is hanging for dear life.

To this end I am going to fit my Triumph straight six in while I take time to rebuild the AC lump over a period of time with the hope of sourcing parts as I go along and spread the cost.

The Triumph engine when last used gave me some 116bhp, so a healthy increase over the 2 litre, however the engine does not look so pretty. I will be using the Triumph box with Overdrive. It may transpire that I like the conversion so much, that I will just oil/grease cover the AC engine and wrap it up for when ever I sell the car one day in the distant future.

Anyway I will detail the swap with pictures etc as I go along, I am at present just stripping the Triumph engine to give it new set of gaskets/seals etc and check all is ok (far cheaper than AC parts). I have also just purchased a little run around while I am doing this swap which is a 1966 Series 2 Landrover albeit V8 powered.

I hope to get this done for the new year but as I am having a knee replacement late Oct it may roll on a little.

I may even contact Terry to see if the swap is of interest to Action, I know I am bastardising an Ac 2 litre but at least I will be keeping her on the road and keeping the original engine for prosperity and a future owner one day.

   Cheers G

Damn just nearly at home after a nice ling drive and the head gasket has gone and blown again.

So decision made, not going to waste anymore time money on the engine, It looks like my old Triumph engine will be put into service after all. Just going to rebuild it and fit with OD box.

So anyone out there want a good head, (It is the block face that shot), a set of fully rebuilt Carbs, a rebuilt only a fortnight ago starter, a rebuilt approx 3 months ago dynamo, a gearbox in excellent condition, or even an engine for rebuild with excellent bottom end, of even the lot then get in touch.

I will be pulling it all out soon and will document the progress of the triumph conversion in due course.

   Cheers  G
