Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Hi Long time no see, a quick update on the Ol Girl

Well I see the Forum is still its thriving and buzzing face of AC ownership

Anyway, The Ol Girl has been very busy over the last 6 months or so going here and there, but now then engine block has suffered a crack in the block.

So engine out, along with gearbox scratch head and think I know lets go V8 So block stripped most of the bits sold to Triumph enthusiasts hither and dither. Buy a large cube Rover V8 done, convert to dizzy done, Source 4 speed ZF auto from a Jaguar xj40 done, get Disco bellhousing and flexiplate setup done, see if it all fits nearly done, getting there.

Front disc conversion on way.

Hope to have done by her 75th birthday which happens to be same day as my 70th.

General Forum / Sadly I have received my last ACtion.

Its time for me to depart from the ACOC. I have received my last ACtion.

I see in Simon and Keith letter show that for the last few years we have had some secrecy from the council, no wonder they did not want to publish minutes of the meetings.

Glad to see this appears to have changed in that minutes are seen in brief by the members.

It is a shame that the club still appears to be Cobra/Ace centric, but that's way of life they are the 'money' cars.

I see the CRP&G is also being hidden from the membership. Another cover up? I agree with Simon and Keith Registrars should run a registry of the facts relating to any car, not opinion. The rest is up to prospective buyers. Simple!

Anyway I will be at Le Mans and then that's it. I have moved on to a model friendlier and more inclusive club.

I will always pop up on here with the Ol Girl.

Just come back from Arundel and hit a pot hole, Drivers door popped open (I am sure I shut it fully ) flew backwards snapped door check strap, kept going hit the rear wing, now dented , mirror flew off, bent hinge so door now dropped.

Buggerations. Must look at fitting a small extra catch.

Ho Hum another day in driving the Ol Girl.

ACOC News and Events / ACOC Sprint

I see from the current  minutes in Action that the sprint is in all likelihood  not on the cards this year.

I note that in the last minutes in March Action a track day was deemed unlikely as exhaust noise considerations may be an issue. An issue for whom? Have any of the council been to a track day? Other than outright race cars owned by some members, most are road cars and a noise issue should not be a concern. It would allow many members who might like to take their road car on the the track for a fun run, the opportunity to do so.

In the current minutes a timed run event at Santa Pod is now being suggested, Drag Racing by the ACOC surely not . I am not sure, as it is not clear whether this on a 'Run what you brung' (RWYB) event or a mixed motorsport event, which again  will eliminate  most members from having a run up the strip. I have a sneaking feeling that it will be a motorsport event so that the Elite few will be catered for. At least it wont make a financial loss!!

Personally I think the club is missing out on not doing a track day, and there are corners to steer round.

Hi Ya went to the Southern swap meet yesterday.

Some great cars there in the club car park and loads of unusual bits and pieces in the market area.

For the Cobra boys there was a 427  engine there fully rebuilt at £12k.

I've got to get the Ol' Girl lower

Hi Ya all,

After spending a couple of days cleaning stripping and removing leaves with a little de-arching, then re assembly with nice new grease gaiters for the sliding shackle. I then spent a few hours up and down the pit as well as a bit of gentle reclining on the garage floor, putting them back on, all greased up and hey presto she is sitting with a very nice stance. (well I think so).

I will be fitting air shocks to replace original ones to make sure that there is some lift to the front end for getting over any very big sleeping policemen and maybe getting on the ferry ramp to get to le Mans  . These will also allow some extra support as when needed.

Here are a couple of pics of the Ol girl down and dirty.

Now I can get on with stripping the bonnet for re-spraying and doing the Disc conversion.

Anyone seen this ad on Ebay for 2 totally shot 2 litres at £6500 really.

I made a offer at way below that and knocked back.

He thinks the 2 door is rarer than a 4 door.

I'd take the 2 door but at a sensible price.

Here's a couple of pics of the Ol' Girl on a day to Brooklands Museum with a few like-minded fellas from the NSRA.

Had a great day out and a run. Nice wander around the museum with coffee and cakes (very nice fruit scones) etc etc.

Maybe we could similar with a group of AC's.

General Forum / I see from Action and the Council minutes that.....

The club had a better balance at the end of July this year compared to last year.

The sprint is going to make a loss AGAIN. However, it is the jewel in the crown of ACOC events according to write up on the sprint. Must be a small crown, as far as I can see only 10 AC owners took part in AC cars. So, with 557 members that means that 1.78% of the membership took part. The council are proposing a membership cost of £5 to £10 to assist in covering the loss and that of the extra cost of Action production.

Now, maybe the best way of reducing Actions costs is to go to a bi-monthly magazine? more time for better content, then maybe it would be 'exceptional quality'.

Another is to cancel the sprint, make those who want to take part, pay for, move to a cheaper location. Not charge the other 98.22% of the membership for the honour of the elite few to take part. Then we would not need a safeguarding officer.  Or how about a track type day for club members only, those who don't have access to racing suits/licences etc etc it could include a BBQ and even be part of the National? I wonder how many members actually care about the sprint? a poll perhaps or is that stretching democracy too far?

There are a number of vacancies in the club that need filling however the council think adding 2 more posts would help eg  an events coordinator and a safeguarding officer. Ho hum good luck with filling those posts as well.

Le Mans 2023 is closing in on us and not seen much action re that, seems to still be in discussion.

Ah maybe I am just old and grumpy and wittering.

Hi all

Yes, I know our cars are not Ace's or Cobra's etc etc. but would it not have been nice for the club to acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the production of the 2-litre saloon.

I know the club is a bit Ace/Cobra centric,(Well maybe a lot), but share a little light on the Saloons, after all if it had not been made post war then maybe the Ace/Cobra et al may never have existed.

So come on 2-litre owners stick a post on here with a pic of your car for the 75th year. It does not matter if it is battered and tattered or pristine, it's 75 years old!!!!!!!!!

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Getting to grips with Ol Girls Front disc conversion.

Hi ya been off of here for a bit. Been busy driving and day to day living.

So getting down to disc conversion for the winter rest.

I have stripped the old wheel studs from some spare hubs. That was a task as did not know if they were screw in's or push fit's. They turned out to be screw in's. This required the peening on the rear of the hub to be ground off and a 1/4 drill into the rear of the stud to weaken it, then I used an Irwin 13mm bolt/stud extractor on a bar to remove. they were very tight. The hub thread was still tapered from the peening even when removed. (see pics).

I have offered up the discs to the hubs to see were they sit, these are Land-rover Defender vented discs. the stud holes have been enlarged to take the new linger wheel studs that will be fitted to the hubs. I have estimated that I will need a spacer of approx 32mm (need to do a bit more measuring yet to finalise) fitted between the hub and the disc, this will be made to fit tight to the hub cone and a spigot flange to fit inside the disc centre bore.

I am going to use the rear drum brake plate to make a pattern for the disc calliper bracket in 1/4 steel plate.

I will be fitting the hubs with some spare bearings I have to mock it up.

The wheels I have at present are 4 3/4 x 5  pcd with adaptors, these wheels will be redrilled to 5x5 pcd as per hubs. The then will fit to the extended wheel studs that will go through the hub spacer and disc.

Still I am getting there. Slowly slowly catchee monkey.
