Off course you must have a pedal stop on the accelerator. Same apllies if you use a HTOB for a clutch release, instead of a conventional fork and slave. I feel sure that most of the people who experience burst seals with HTOB’s don’t understand about setting up a clutch pedal stop. Me I’m using a conventional std Galaxie fork and slave. However it needs to be 1:1 master/slave and is consequently very heavy. If I can’t get used to it I will have to change the clutch to twin disc which is lighter, effort wise. But everything is such a mission on this car, even one that IMO is optimised!

You can see on the left in the picture the black accelerator cable. I know a lot of guys feel a need to copy exactly everything Shelby did in the ‘60’s, but I think if he had cable, that’s what he would have used. Simpler lighter, cheaper. For me it’s about the spirit, not to kid anybody it’s a car from 1965.

Tried very hard to keep the engine bay clean, to give a chance to the air to escape,

Autokraft Mk IV (Cobra) 302 to 427 downgrade 😜

A year is a long time in politics......also it’s a long time in stupid, crazy, pointless, dinosaur engineering car projects. The first pic is 26 Dec 2017, the last day the original 302, 5L EFI engine was running and the other two, today, 19 Dec 2018. A few more connections before the monster 427, 532 bhp 7L will burst into life. I’m very pleased with my work to date and that I’ve tried to  respect the Mk IV ‘s identity. Wasn’t easy. Expect an undetectable change in the weather, around February 2019.

Vince, you mentioned difficult restarting, presumably from hot? With an FE side oiler this is almost certainly vapour lock (fuel vaporising in the carb feed line) caused by engine bay heat. You can rectify this with a fuel return line to the tank.
Also a high compression FE needs a high torque mini starter.

Damn...my pedals are upside down?

The headers are the next big hurdle. I’m not sure on the connection.....but a flange seems simpler to me. I’m hoping for a 2.5-3” under car system. I’m looking at Spintech mufflers.

53
All new design pedal box, pre plumbed to make servicing easier in the limited space.

54
In cockpit hydraulics, new pedal box and new one piece transmission tunnel with removable scuttle braces (not shown). Clutch can be changed in car and transmission can be removed without taking engine out. In fact I can remove engine, transmission bellhousing, entirely on my own in just one hour, albeit with the headers and ancillaries already disconnected.

55
......anti rip-out engine mounts, designed just for this conversion.

56
Looks similar to the original engine bay, but everything, steering, pedals, firewall has been remade to accommodate the big block. Everybody remarks on the striking, all new polished stainless firewall, but that was comparatively easy to make compared to everything else. Unlike other conversions, there’s plenty of room for air to escape and crucially it’s 3” wider than a few months ago. If anybody one day wants to put the original 302 back, there’ll be a lot of room to work on it!

I have stopped posting updates to this build, as judging by the lack of feedback/comments there is no particular interest in it. However, if you join the closed AC Cobra group on Facebook, you will see almost weekly updates with extensive pix and a very enthusiastic audience. Just search Mk IV 302 to 427.
Currently fitting new hydraulics, then clutch fork indexing, custom built headers, all new exhaust system and finally all new electrics. Feels like we are breaking new ground with this build as it is intended to be a development of the 11 x 427 Mk IV’s Autokraft made and not another Shelby clone. The work detail is vast as we are trying to accommodate the new larger drivetrain, but not lose the Mk IVs identity.  Feels like we are on the home straight now and I could not be happier how it’s going. I expect on the road in Feb 2019....and simply can’t wait. Confidently expect it to be as absurd as it will be fabulous.

General Forum / Re: The Future?

So classic cars have to be banned on the basis they won’t be able to communicate with autonomous vehicles? Well, in 2017 there were 37.5 million registered cars on the road in the UK. Of that number just 2.54 million were cars registered in 2017. That’s 6.7% of the total. So by the same argument, it’s not just classic cars that will need banning because they can’t communicate with autonomous vehicles, it’s the other 93.3%, or 34.96 million cars already on the road.
I bet there’s not a minister in the cabinet who has any in depth knowledge of autonomous car design, the limitations and dangers. Remember these the same gullible incompetents who told us to buy diesels.......

My understanding is that the reason the the judgment went against JD Classics, was the aggrieved buyer (who spent £40m with JD Classics) alledged that Mr Hood acted as his his agent for the sourcing of the cars, a charge that Mr Hood unsuccessfully defended. On that basis the judge found that Mr Hood could not be acting on the buyers interest, by selling him a car that Mr Hood already owned.
It’s unusual for a buyer to win this sort of action these days, where the point of law examined is a bending the truth by a classic car dealer, something the more worldly of us frankly expect. Let’s hope it does some good to improve the worst elements of the classic car trade.
Incidentally, I’ve been a guest at an open day at JD Classic’s where Derek Bell entertained us with some reflections of his career. My brother in law bought a 3.8 Mk II Jag for a (to me) crazy £120k, and with his eyes wide open. That Mk II he bought was the best on the world and a Hood gave him £50k for his old MkII.  I’m not the kind of person, who buys cars in environments like this and being in engineering all m life, I’m not easily impressed, but JD was an operation like no other. 60 employees, over a hundred cars, several million pound Cobras knocking around like they were common place. We examined a 300SL gulling, that could not feasibly been restored to a higher standard. I’m sad to see that part go, because it was unique. I’m not convinced the new owners will be there for long.

What about a Mk IV for the same price? 25k miles, red, 1988, LHD, 16” w, roll bar delete, 5.0, EFI, T5, all std,  vgc, asking £65k + 5%. Won’t discuss on forum. Email me Bob, if interested.
