« on: February 01, 2017, 13:45:53 »
As many of you may know, apart from being a fairly recent Mk IV owner, I'm also active in the Historic Rally Car Register and run a meeting group on the first Tuesday of the Month at The Gate, nr. High Wycombe.

Next meeting we are showing Robbie Coltrane's fabulous documentary 'The Ferrari Cobra Wars'. An unmissable film for any Cobra owner. All ACOC members are welcome and there will be no admission charge. Just a great evening with like minded enthusiasts.

Hope to meet some of you there and below is the programme in detail.

Berks, Bucks and Oxon Historic Rally Car Register meeting

Tuesday 7 th February HRCR meeting at The Gate, nr. High Wycombe

   Film Show

   Caroll Shelby vs Enzo Ferrari

   AKA 'The Ferrari Cobra Wars'

Okay guys......not quite rallying, an indulgence possibly,
but in reality this is one of motor racings greatest David and Goliath tales.

In the early sixties Ford USA heard that Ferrari was for sale and were more than interested. However, Il Comendatorre led them right down the (sunken) garden path, until Turin offered to subsidise Modena, which was the purpose of the ruse in the first place.

Incensed, the suits at Ford wanted revenge, but had nothing capable of beating Ferrari on track
With the most fortunate timing, race driver and dungaree wearing chicken farmer, Caroll Shelby appeared in Fords Detroit offices with a half baked plan, to drop their new V8, into the English AC Ace sports car. Fed up with being beaten by GM in sports car racing, Ford agreed to supply engines, in the hope that something good might come out of it.

As most of you will know, that car became the AC Cobra.

In reality, the ACs aerodynamics were never going to allow them get past the 170-180 mph GTOs at Le Mans. They tried and were humiliated.

This is story about self-belief. Led 23 year old aerodynamics student Pete Brock, a group of California Hot Rodders, decided they would take on the elite of European motor racing.

Well produced, with fantastic in depth technical interviews, race footage and soundtrack.
Narrated with great aplomb by Robbie Coltrane, with input from Shelby's girlfriend,
business manager and engine supplier arm twister Joan Cole.

To quote the still lovely Ms Cole

‘There was nobody involved with the Cobra Daytona project,
who wouldn't say, that this was the best of times’

Meetings are (normally) held first Tuesday of every month at
The Gate, Bryants Bottom Road, Great Missenden, Bucks, HP16 0JS. 8pm for 8.30.

To keep these evenings free please come from 7 pm and
take advantage of our hosts excellent food and beer!

So has this car has been built up from a genuine discarded damaged chassis, which came from a car which was given a new Autokraft chassis, but kept the original chassis number CSX 3272? And does it follow that this (red) car is of contemporary construction, sitting on the former cars original, but repaired chassis, which no longer possesses aforementioned chassis number?

Here's what seems to be the same car (check out the 3 rivet chassis tag)......... wearing a different reg, just to clear things up.

Is this case of unscrupulous multiplication, outrageous pricing, or am I missing something?

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / CSX3282 Owners log from 1966
« on: September 12, 2016, 14:26:06 »
Hi guys, I normally frequent the MK IV forum as I'm converting a Mk IV to all aluminium FE power.
Along the way I came across this diary of a buyer who (it seems) bought new 427 Cobra back in '66. It's a bit haphazard in layout, but scroll down an it's an interesting read, especially the problems and the mention of an air valve for the drivers feet, which I would be grateful if somebody could explain?

Do any AC MK IV owners have the listing on their V5 as follows?

   MAKE: AC
MODEL: Mk IV (or Cobra Mk IV)

   Mine has only

   MAKE: AC
   MODEL:

I sent off log book with letter from Alan F-S, stating car was indeed a Mk IV, but they say they have no SMMT code for the Mk IV as a model type.

I wonder if anybody knows how many inches if vacuum the 302 5.0 EFI produces at idle? Im considering an engine change and would like to know what is required for the brake servo.

23
Not an AC, but clever design for anyone without full leg control. Steering rings allow throttle and braking, clutch disengages/engages upon whether throttle ring released or depressed.

Looks like recent paint to me. Personally, I prefer the car in Old English, not Glacier white. Also, looks like there's a bit too much tidying up to do, for 200,000eu/£147,000.

26
Registration plate 427 AC sold for either £8100 or £8200 at DVLA auction yesterday. To this 8% auctioneers commission and 20% VAT need to be added. So just over £10k
I suppose to some it might sound inexpensive, but embarrassing to put on your Mk IV unless it had a 427 in it. Hopefully its been bought by somebody with a genuine one which is where it should reside.

27
My MK IV has 15" wheels and recent 275 Avon ZZs on the rear, which have now done about 1500 miles. From day one, I've noticed black dust on the lower half of the rear wings, that surely can only be from tyre wear? The car tracks true and no other issues.
Does everybody else who runs Avons experience this, or do I need the f/r geometry reset?

28
My company recently came up with what I think is an improved low profile design for the rather ungainly standard issue Mk IV hood. The aim was a better aesthetic and a removable 'clip in' rear screen (UV stabilised acrylic) to enable higher speed cruising with reduced lift. The rear screen stores perfectly in the boot, taking up virtually no room, is optically clear and pretty waterproof. Removing it does reduce the 'ballooning' although obviously there is a lot more through draught.
In any case the car can do 85 mph with the only issue being wind noise. As you can see, the roll bar now lives outside the hood and the concept has proven to be completely satisfactory

My Dad was a service manager at a Ford dealer that carried the Cobra's back in the 60's. I remember him telling a story about a wealthy dentist who came in and told his salesman he wanted to buy a 427 Cobra...the salesman after talking to him for a while suggested the 289 would be a better choice but the dentist persisted that he wanted a 427. So they went for a test drive...after the test drive the dentist said you know maybe you are right, maybe I should consider the 289 instead....to which the salesman said, that was the 289...
