Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / AC spares catalogue
« on: December 07, 2016, 16:25:42 »
Whilst rearranging one of my book shelves, I came across an
   AC Spares Catalogue, 4 cylinder cars R29 & R29A
This must have been left over from Dad's Royal days. The car's now in Denmark, I think, and Dad's gone to meet (and bore the pant's off) his maker. This means that it is available to anyone who has a car relevant to said catalogue and hasn't already got one.
Please note - I would like this to go to an owner who genuinely hasn't got one, not someone who is going to put it on Ebay/Gumtree or place it next to the copy that they already have.
   I'll check the register!!!
I would have supplied a photo, but as you may know........
Get in contact if it's something that you could use(not hoard).

General Forum / ACOC Sprint - the future
« on: November 21, 2016, 12:35:05 »
Having been to the sprint most years since 1989, I notice how things seem to be on the decline. I read with interest, our chairman's and SJ351's comments on the '3 questions' thread.
There can be agreement on one issue, the sprint, from an ACs taking part point of view, is in decline.
   What is to be done?
1/ The idea of a track day in place of the sprint has some merit. (see '3 Questions' thread)
2/ Change the venue to one that is more convenient to the majority of members, and to a  time of year when decent weather might be expected.
3/ Do both of the above
Some random thoughts on the above 3 points

I completely agree that the palaver and expense of sprinting has a significant effect on entries. I certainly put me off what is, for me, a once a year outing.
The car's continual increase in value has put a damper on many throwing them into Madgwick's with gay abandon.
After last year's sprint, I contacted Castle Combe to see what costs were involves with hiring the circuit for a sprint. The  lengthy email received no reply! Maybe a foot-in-the-water page in ACtion asking for interest in the change might show what the club members want most.
I think that the difficulty of attracting new members is nothing compared with attracting new members and then expecting them to expose themselves and their pride and joy to the danger of just about the fastest sprint course out there.
We seem to be locked into Goodwood. As our Chair noted ,'if we failed to renew our application, we would never have another Sprint at Goodwood as there is a queue waiting for anyone to drop out'. This is true. but hanging on to an event that has no take-up is....?
It would only take the RACMSA to insist that all competing car are to have roll-bars for the event, as a sprint, to have the carpet permanently pulled from beneath it.
I think it could transpire that the only competitive event that takes place in future years at the circuit is the Revival, if matey in his bedroom with his noise meter has his way.
Does the sprint historically pay for itself, or is the club subsidising it?
I for one would relish an ACOC member's only track day.
The above comments have no agenda, I'm not trying to 'get' at anyone or prove any point. It's just that the sprint isn't the same as when I thrashed all those MEs with my poor old MGB all those years ago!!!

General Forum / 3 questions
« on: October 04, 2016, 12:16:25 »
3 questions
1/ Is it possible to make posting photos on our wonderful forum as easy as it is to attach a photo to an email? if not, why not?
2/Is the ACOC forum open to non-members, if so, why? After all, it is the AC owner's club forum.
3/ Why is the club in the process of wasting money on producing a Brexit register? All the registers are on the club website. Seems to be a complete waste of the club's money and, for those that give there time so willingly,a waste of it!

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Lucas GA4 magneto
« on: August 13, 2016, 11:56:55 »
I have a Lucas GA4 magneto on Ebay at the moment. It was found in my father's garage whilst clearing things out. I have no idea of it's condition. He used to own an AC Royal and I think it may have been a spare. I wonder if the knowledgeable might have a look on Ebay and reply to this post as to whether or not it is right for an Anzani engine? If anyone is interested in buying it, please contact me and I will remove it from Ebay as I would prefer that it went to a club member. I should have thought of this before putting it on Ebay, but clearing out Dad's thing's has left me in a bit of a tizz!

General Forum / A new monthly meeting ?
« on: July 19, 2016, 11:40:53 »
Hi all, A short post to see if there is any interest in establishing a monthly meeting in the New Forest area. This is a toe in the water exercise to see if there is anyone out there who would like a get-together. There are 2 monthly meeting within 25 miles of each other in the Surrey area, which makes me a little jealous! If I miss the Sprint, and the National day is too far, I can go the whole year with only the forum to keep me company. Any interested members should reply to this post, that way we will all know who's showing interest and from that a venue suitable to all can be agreed upon. I have very recently been through this palaver with the Morgan 3-wheeler club. Out of the 35-40 MTWC members who live in the area, only 5 replied positively! Hopefully the ACOC will be more responsive.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Cleaning stone- chip from under wings
« on: September 01, 2015, 18:49:09 »
Hi all.
I put this post as a reply to an earlier post, however, I thought I'd give it a try as a fresh topic, one that I hope someone has encountered and overcome in the past.

Hi all, I'm trying to decide how to protect the underside of my front wings on the Ace.
If I go down the mesh shield route I can copy the Aceca which has that sort of set up. I have already obtained 10mm closed cell foam and high temperature adhesive. My big concern with going down the foam route is removing the sprayed-on stone chip coating that has been on there for possibly decades and is now rock hard. It appears to be the stuff that many manufactures used to spray along sills, then over sprayed with body colour. I need to get back to nice roughed up bare aluminium. I'm loathed to use a heat gun for fear of damaging the paintwork. Tying to soften it with a solvent would be messy beyond belief. I tried a test 'scrape' and I fear that I'd do more damage than any stone chip that I'm likely to come across!
Does anyone have any knowledge of the mesh guards that Keith Lessiter has mentioned, in a related post, by Classic Autos? It would save making them if the stone chip has to stay!
   Any suggestions?
   Glenn

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Advice request
« on: April 07, 2015, 13:24:47 »
Hi all,
I've had the Ace since November and due to a broken collar bone, I've only driven it 3 times, but what times they were! I can see why these cars are so well respected. I thought it was going to be similar to the Aceca, but it wasn't. I can't wait to become more familiar with it and to establish its reliability. The Ace or the Aceca for the international?, now there's a nice teaser to ponder.
Anyway, back to the point of this post. I've a few things I'd like members advice on , They are
1/ I understand that the g/box can be dropped out without taking the engine out. Is it more hassle than taking the engine and gearbox out as one unit. I've a clearance issue regarding roof and engine hoist, but I do have a pit.
2/ Lucas distributor points/condenser - Are there any options or does one have to take what one can get. Where's the best place to source them in the UK?
3/ My rear O/S wheel gently rubs the wheel arch on spirited left-handers. The N/S doesn't do the same on right handers. Is this at all unusual? It's on 16" Michelin.
   Any help gratefully received, Glenn

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace curved windscreen availibility
« on: December 12, 2014, 14:42:27 »
Hi there, does anyone out there know if there are any suppliers who hold curved Ace windscreens in the UK or close by? Mine is starting to de-laminate and, although it's fine at the moment, I thought I'd dip a toe in the water.
   Many thanks Glenn

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Bristol wanted
« on: August 04, 2014, 14:45:07 »
I've decided that my sad life would be a little more complete if my garage contained an Ace Bristol. Life's too short to be beating about the bush, so I'm actively looking. I have a Mk4 which could be part of the deal. I understand that they are thin on the ground at present, but I thought a posting on the forum could do no harm.
The money's there, all I need is a seller. All help gratefully received.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ford 2.6 engine mounts
« on: July 27, 2014, 11:03:58 »
I have been keeping an eye out for original engine mounts for the 2.6 Ford engine. I've been looking on ebay and auto jumbles. I managed to get some pattern ones off ebay some years ago, but these proved to be inferior to the Ford ones, so much so that I have refitted the ones I took off to fit the pattern ones!! Does anyone know of a source for these vital parts? I attach a photo so that it's clear what I'm on about. If this request draws a blank, how does one go about kicking off the process of club sanctioned remanufacture? Oops!, don't seem to be able to add a photo.

Hi All, what a summer! I've had plenty of wonderful days to familiarise myself with AK1500. All's going well, but it does seem to be running hotter than I'd expect, even when the weather's cooler. It runs it's fan constantly once it gets to its normal temperature (between 80 and 95, sometimes a bit higher) I want to take out the radiator and to check the fan sender is opening and closing the circuit correctly and that the thermostat is opening and closing correctly and if it's the right temp range.

   So, 5 questions
1/ can the radiator be removed through the bonnet aperture once the bonnet, wheel arches and various ancillaries have been removed?
2/ What is the correct rad fan sender  (cut in and out temps, part number?)
3/ What is the correct Thermostat (cut in and out temps, part number?)
4/ Any recommendations regarding flushing/descaling the radiator core?
5/ Does anyone know if a fan that is being driven constantly effects the cooling capabilities of the system, one way of another? I tried working it out, but it clouded the void between my ears.
My engine is a standard EFi

I hope some of you out there can help

Having ascertained what types of oil to use, it was time to put them in their respective places
First up, the diff. we all know that the h/book is wrong when it says 3.12 litres. I measured what came out and it was 1.55 litres and that's exactly how much went in. No problems there, so on to the gearbox.
This was, according to my h/book, meant to hold 4.54 litres which to my mind seemed to be about twice the amount that I had ever put in a box of any type including pre-selector boxes. It had 2.15 litres in it ,and I wish I had checked with a bit of bent wire before draining it to see how far below the filler/level plug the level actually was. I didn't and it was my undoing! I had already opened an access hole in the transmission tunnel to align with the F/L plug (I can't believe this was not something that was done during manufacture. They did it for the diff!?)next, I found a snug fitting piece of tube to go on the end of my little funnel, bunged it in the hole a put 4 litres in. The mystery is that 4 litres went in with no trouble at all, no waiting for it to drain down the funnel, it just ran straight into the box as you would expect it to if it held almost exactly an imp.gallon, however, when I removed the funnel & tube 1.5ltres of expensive ATF pissed into my inspection pit!!! So the handbook is wrong again. I took the figure of 4.54liters as gospel as I had no reason to doubt it, unlike the diff where I had been advised by several people that the figure in the h/book was wrong. I jacked the car up to silly angles just in case there was some sort of weir that needed overcoming (as in some live-axle cars), but no, 2.6 litres was all I could get in. I make that 57% of what the book says.
Next the engine. Apart from struggling to remove the oil filter all went well. when I added what remained in the filter to what came out of the two sump plugs it totalled 3.65 litres (the dipstick had shown that it was about 2/3 full). It took 4.5 litres to bring the level up to the top of the 'full' mark on the dipstick.
So there we are, all lubricant now changed and some lessons learned.
I wonder if anyone out there has had similar experiences??
   cheers Glenn

Hi All, My first post yielded zero responses, so I'm hoping for better luck this time with a new question.
I need some advice on engine/gear box & differential oils.
The info in the handbook is now 20 years old and I have been given so much conflicting advice that I don't know if I'm coming or going.
   My car is AK1500 1993 302 efi, T5 g/box & Salisbury LDS diff
I've been advised to use anything from 5W/30 to 15W/60 in the engine, so I've no idea.
As far as the gearbox is concerned, using ATF seems to be the way, but as I said, I'm confused.
The Diff is the only thing I feel confident about going out and buying oil for, but as for whether or not to use any 'addative' ??Hopefully there maybe some good advice out there. Any help would be much appreciated.
As there seems to be so much differing thought out there on oils, does most advice stem from what can be obtained cheaply or easily??? I have never scrimped on oils (I even changed engine oil after every race meeting back in the day). I want what's best, not what's cheapest. If it happens to be both then so much the better.

I drove the car for the first time at the weekend since getting it in November. Compared with the ultralight things I've been used to in the past, it was like taking a very obedient Mastiff out for a walk for the first time when all my experience is with Terriers!!! I look forward to becoming more familiar with it.

Are there any MklVs in the Bournemouth area or thereabouts?
I'm Glenn Burnage, by the way, the AC Aceca Registrar (in case you were wondering)
