Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ford 2.6 engine mounts
« on: August 04, 2014, 14:38:06 »
Panic over, I've sorted it out all on my own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

137
This is what I found. The thermostat had the markings- A160 and 4180, nothing else. I assumed (dangerous) that the 160 may be the opening temp in Fahrenheit (=71cent). I placed it in some near boiling water and nothing happened. I placed it in a pan with a thermometer and turned up the gas, as the temp reached 99 deg C it opened a fraction (no more than 1mm) and I noticed that there were signs of leakage of a waxy substance! I considered it to be U/S and sourced a new'un with an opening around 70-75 deg C.
The radiator seemed to be in reasonable condition inside. No worrying amounts of muck or restriction in flow were evident. Upon inspection, the gills of the core were quite considerably blocked, especially the lower third, with insect and road debris. Also quite a lot, maybe 5-10%, of the gills were 'bruised'. First I spent an age straightening out the gills, after which I drove out almost all of the debris by repeated water hose and compressed air from both sides. This took an age as the gills are perforated and are almost designed to trap anything that gets past the outermost edge. It is not possible to poke anything other that a slim pointy thing through them (which does nothing expect further compact any debris!!), anything else catches on the gills and does more harm than good. My patience and persistence were rewarded and I was very happy that the radiator was almost 'as new' once it had a light coat of mat rad paint.
Next, the fan switch which is located in the top hose connection of the radiator. Its 'on' temp was 86 degC and its 'off' temp was 77 degC!! No wonder the fan was running all the time. I didn't even bother testing it. I replaced it with one that goes 'on' at 95degC and 'off' at 88degC.
With it all reassembled, it was time for a test run (I checked there was no air trapped in the top of the rad by cracking the bleeder at the top/front of the rad). Fortunately the weather was pretty hot when I test drove it, and low and behold it performed beautifully. It held a temp very slightly beyond midway between 70 and 100 on the gauge. It held this even when I kept it in 4th for an extended time. At no time did the fan come on. In the driveway I let it tick over until, at about 95 on the gauge, the fan came on. It remained on for maybe 4-5 minutes during which the temperature steadily dropped and the fan stopped, as expected, at about 85 on the gauge.  The test run was completed without the intake deflector or the number plate and bumper assy. Whether or not this will make any difference, who knows? I suspect not, now that the cooling system appears to working as it should.
So there we are,  all done and I'm very pleased with the outcome.
Many thanks to all who contributed. Glenn

I recently enquired about a spare clutch and throttle cable and was told that the clutch cable varied over the years and a spare could only be copied from my car, not supplied 'Off the shelf' Hope this helps avoid the scenario whereby the carefully carried spare clutch cable is found not to fit when the original gives up the ghost

Wenzeh, many thanks for the advice. It came out through the bottom with no trouble at all. Once again, many thanks for replying.
Graham, also many thanks to you for taking the time to pen a detailed, informative reply. I shall use your guidance to work my way through this 'running hot' issue. I'll post my findings in due course. Many thanks for sharing valuable knowledge. Glenn

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Speedbleeder brake valves
« on: April 01, 2014, 10:28:25 »
I didn't even know these things existed until read your post. I looked them up and now I know what they are. Having read the bumph, I can say that they are overselling it as well as omitting some of its shortcomings. On their website they state that a pressurised system costs $300 dollars. A Gunson Easibleed can bought new for under £20.
These fancy valves still require you to pump the pedal, so you have no idea if any bubbles are coming from the system, whereas with a pressurised system you can watch to see if any bubbles are being forced out. I have used a pressurised system for many years on many vehicles and have even been able to buy a selection of master cylinder caps that suit every vehicle I've come across. My view of these fancy valve comes under the general heading of "Hype it enough and someone will buy it"

Look interesting, I'm thinking of fitting a set to my Ace.

General Forum / Members only/ anonymous posting
« on: November 14, 2017, 14:10:01 »
Regarding the post by ‘Big Col’ on the 10th Nov about his disappointment of the ACOC stand at the recent NEC show. Over the past few days the post has morphed into a discussion about whether or not anonymous posts should be allowed.
I would like to ask for input on two things, both of which I feel somewhat strongly about. I ask these things so that if any council member should FIND THE TIME to read it, it could be brought up at a future council meeting.
1/ should the ACOC forum be open to ACOC members only?
2/ should anonymity of those registered be allowed?
   Some thoughts…

As a lot of the posts seem to be members thanking other members about the good times had, event info and people asking for technical information, I can see no reason why the forum should not be restricted to members only.
A lot of the bickering seems to be coming from poster’s who are not members, remain anonymous or both.
Should posters posts automatically carry a sign/banner stating if the posted is a paid-up members of the club hosting the forum and/ or an anonymous poster?
I feel somewhat aggrieved that part of my ACOC subscription is used to enable non-members to slag off things/people/events/situations.
As for the post by ‘TTM’ who seems to be hiding behind ‘Protection of privacy’ shield, I don’t see how things would change much for him/her regardless of the ACOC forum being restricted to members only!?!? My view is if you’re so worried about that, don’t post. After all surely your details are with the administrator?
   Any views??

General Forum / AC books
« on: November 13, 2017, 10:01:57 »
Before I put these books on Ebay, I thought it only proper to offer them the the ACOC members. The Rinsey Mills book seems to be either unavailable or massively pricey, the cheapest I could find was £62 for an 'acceptable' condition s/hand copy. P&p not included it these prices. I can be contacted via glenn_burnage@tiscali.co.uk

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / YPC8 article in Aug Action
« on: September 04, 2017, 09:23:16 »
I've just read the short piece on YPC8's '56 Monte antics.
I have, for years, been trying to find information regarding WPG7, another Aceca that ran as a member of the works entered team of three. I have tracked down as many results sheets as possible relating to its competiton history.
The article in the Aug Action states that YPC8 ".. finished but down the order"
As far as I have been able to ascertain from numerous reports and lists of finishers, WPG7 finished in 57th position overall, with no other members of the AC team finally classified.
Either I've got it wrong or the authors of the Article are in error.
Can anyone not connected with these 2 cars shed any further light on the subject.
Records should be straightened wherever possible.
I was going to put a response in ACtion, but it would be too long winded, so here it is on our forum. If light is shed via the forum, I'll then place a response in ACtion.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca for sale
« on: August 15, 2017, 12:12:03 »
Aceca for sale.
   Brief history.
The car, WPG7, its original number, Chassis No AE512, (the 13th Aceca built) was bought new from AC by Tommy Clarke and he did the 1956 Monte Carlo rally as one of three cars entered by the AC works. Of the three, it alone finished the rally. He also did the Geneva rally, and the Liege-Rome-Liege in the same year plus others. Shortly before the start of the Monte, an AC employee crashed the car into the back of a coal lorry, wiping the front out. The works worked, non-stop for 36 hours to repair it and respray it in time for Tommy to leave for the start in Paris. MotorSport did a full page photo montage of the work carried out.
I have been unsuccessful in finding out its history after Tommy sold it after the 1956 rally season ended (he bought an Aceca Bristol to do the Mille Miglia, The only Aceca to have entered in period and the one that now allows Acecas into that event).
My father was well connected with all the garage proprietors in the south as he was an ‘Insurance assessor’ for many years for a major insurance company after managing the largest Garage in Southampton- Wadhams, Formerly Munn & Underwoods.
Dad put out the feelers for something interesting to restore and an associate in the Isle of Wight mentioned that he had an old car in this trim-store which was taken as payment from a chap who couldn't afford to pay for the work that was completed on the an Aston and the Aceca. Dad restored it as his retirement project from 1989 to 1992. I worked close by and helped at every opportunity. He did everything except the trimming which was done by Mike Thomas.
The original AC engine is now in Ace AE37, and has been for many years, since the early sixties, I think. WPG7 now has a Ford 2.6 with an early Mays head and ford Transit o/d gearbox with Corsair 2000E internals (the closest ratios that Ford did that would fit). It’s done circa 27K miles since restoration and is in great condition. I have been away to Europe many times in it, the last being the AC International to Luxemburg (including laps of the old Nurburgring). I have completed quite a bit of work since taking it over from Dad, about 10 years ago – Front anti-roll bar, rebuilt the back end (bearing etc.), I had the late Gregg Margetts rebuilt the Mays head, and I recently fitted a period radiator blind (adjustable on the move).
The car has one unique feature – a roof mounted windscreen wiper- ordered by Tommy Clarke for the Monte.

General Forum / What's the best way to sell my AC?
« on: August 12, 2017, 16:57:09 »
I have decided to sell my Aceca. Had it for twelve years, been in the family since '89 - time to move on before I arrive at the situation whereby I cannot tell the difference between my ass and a hole in the ground.
   Commission fees? Auction? private?
Any guidance would be most helpful.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Acecas in the '56 Monte?
« on: March 20, 2017, 16:48:12 »
I've never been sure or the identity of the the 'other' Aceca that was entered in the 1956 Monte Carlo rally.
My car WPG7 (AE512) Clarke /Baker and YPC8 (AE499) Easton/Garnier, I know about, but I've no info about the 3rd car. I believe it was a french owner? But as to the car and who drove it and it's chassis number - anyone out there know?
