General Forum / AC factory records - Did they make mistakes?
« on: June 02, 2018, 13:38:35 »
I am representing an Aceca that plausibly has the correct engine.  The story is below.  How likely is it that the factory made a mistake?  Anyone have any other stories of the factory listing the car engine incorrectly?  Would there be tell tale signs if an engine was changed out for another?

AEX672 is known to have retained its correct AC engine since 1958, numbered CL 2356-W. It should be noted that AC production records of the period were not always strictly accurate, and sometimes changes occurred between the printing of the production records and assembly of each specific car. In this case, AEX661 and AEX672 were built sequentially for export to BC Sports Cars, and the engine present in AEX672 was supposedly intended during production for AEX661. The intervening cars were all Bristol-powered, and AEX661 is presently fitted with a Bristol unit. Since none of the prior owners of either car swapped engines, and it is doubtful that BC Sports Cars swapped engines between the two cars, the engines were most likely installed at the factory in the wrong cars, particularly since “matching numbers” was not such a concern back then. In short, AEX672 was almost certainly born with engine CL 2356-W.

Sorry posted this in the wrong place but couldn't change it so, to reiterate..

My client is looking for a non stories car to use as a daily driver.  That's why he is going with the American V8 engine.  He wants the beautiful body of the Aceca or Apollo with the dependability of an American V8.  No offense Bristol [:)]

He would also consider a Marcos GT

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / BEX 240 delivered to new owner
« on: October 29, 2017, 22:36:13 »
The Eagle has landed.
   Car here safe and sound.
Thank you. Do not ever hesitate to use me as a reference. I am delighted
I have now established, with a little help from my friends, W. J. Thompson seemed to import random cars as well as being heavily into the gee gee's
He bought 3 in Dec 56. This one went to a Don Zink. BIG name in Oklahoma oil. He had it raced three times the sold it to W (Bill) Steele who was, we think, cousin. The founder of the Zinc dynasty was John Steele Zink. John Zink also sponsored several Indy racers in the '50's
Steele used the car racing under '77' or '7' ( as witnessed by a quick forensic on the cars paint) and, we believe, changed the colour. He came second in the champs that year to Pierre Mion, who I have chatted to!, then sold it on to a Dr Whitehead. Thence to a Mr Lindheim who just stored it and thence to Mr Hurst.
It's in great, if slightly modified, shape and I'm on it!!!!  Ernie Warrender

The Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia is going to coordinate an exhibit and other events based on Lime Rocks's 60th anniversary this summer.

We are going to do a show at the Simeone Museum featuring cars that raced in the initial LR event in April of 1957.
The event at the museum will be called "Legends of Lime Rock" which is what Lime Rock is calling there event as well.
The Simeone event will run from August 12 through August 29th.  We will kick the event off with a dinner and talk with a known driving personality to be announced.  I will put together events to coincide with the exhibit.  I really want this to be a celebration of drivers and so those events will reflect issues of the times. Again - ideas are in their infancy but we have a deep well of information and ideas and experts from which to work.  Also I am open to suggestions.
I have been in touch with Rich Taylor of Vintage Rallies in CT.  Rich and his wife Jean are going to put together a rally between the Simeone Museum and Lime Rock.  We will leave  the morning of August 30th - a caravan of the cars featured at the exhibit with the owners each taking a driver from the 50's with them.  We will invite other cars to join us along the way and we will have an overnight somewhere in the Catskills.  On Thursday morning we will head out to Lime Rock and hook up with the Lime Rock rally to kick off the event.
I have a list of the cars that ran that I will try to post but in the meantime I will need an AC Bristol for the show.  Evelyn Mull and Jordan King both drove one in the inaugural event.  It would be a dream to get Evelyn's car - and then I could do an event on women in racing - but I don't believe anyone knows where that car is.
Also I will be looking for sponsors..  Line up now!

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Need an Aceca for our AC Show
« on: February 13, 2017, 16:55:10 »
The Aceca we had lined up for our Simeone Automotive Foundation Museum Retrospective on AC Cars Ltd due to start this Saturday has had to pull out of the event.  I realize this is a late call to action but if anyone on the east coast (we are located in Philadelphia) has an Aceca that they would be willing to offer for the event it would be most appreciated.  We could even help with transportation if necessary.

   Thanks so much.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ac Bristol BEX231
« on: February 13, 2017, 16:50:14 »
Changed the pictures to a google link so you can see restoration and finished car.

The owner has decided to reduce the price of the car for a more immediate sale... please keep in mind that I can help find parts for the car as I have clients with Ace parts (would have to do a search for a correct engine though)

Ace Bristol BEX 231 left Thames Ditton and was exported to Venezuela 7th December 1956.  The car was owned as of 1998 by R. Scoma.  I am still researching the history of this car.  The current owner found the car in 2001 in a barn in Independence Missouri in 2001 (see photos).  The car, although in poor shape, missing the engine, transmission, the radiator and correct fuel tank.

New owner replaced the entire brake system including master cylinders, brake lines, wheel cylinders, backing plates and shoes. The shocks, universal joints and axle shafts, were also replaced all with correct parts. All of the brakes, suspension and steering are as original.  The original hubs and stubs were kept.  Whenever possible these types of components were retained.  When necessary new pieces were machined. (A box of Whitworth bolts and other extras come with the car).  All of the gauges are original to the car but the speedometer and odometer need to hooked up.

The body was sent to Carriage and Motorworks of Kansas City, Kansas for restoration.

A factory small block high output Ford crate motor purchased new from Ford.with aluminum head roller rockers and a T5 transmission was installed.  A 50's aftermarket steering wheel was also added.  The seats are original and are reupholstered in leather.  The car comes with sidescreens, a tonneau cover that is unrestored and an unrestored top.  The parts that were replaced also come with the car.

The restoration was concluded in 2003.  The car has only seen about 50 miles of use since then. Car is immaculate and runs.
Video and pictures available.  Owner is asking $210,000.00 OBO
