Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / Cobra Barn Find?
« on: August 13, 2014, 22:39:07 »
Those clutch and brake pedals look genuine AC. They also have about 125k miles wear on them. There's a 2 Litre Saloon somewhere with only one pedal!

As Andy suggests, 3 wheeling comes largely down to a difference in front and rear roll stiffnesses. It's true that this is transmitted via the chassis, but even a very flexible chassis (e.g. 500ft-lbs per degree) would only equate to a small fraction of an inch at a wheel under high cornering weight transfer. 3 wheeling spectacles aside, chassis stiffness comes in handy!

Maybe this adjustment was for anti-dive/squat? The inclination of the pivot bolts would affect this characteristic, by adjusting the inclination of the lower suspension pivot axis. That would affect anti-dive more than anti-squat, due to brake torque.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Greyhound for auction
« on: July 03, 2014, 11:22:41 »
It has an odd looking front bumper installed. It had the standard bumpers when I saw it at the 1986 National AC Day. Interesting to see it has a Ford 2.6 power-plant. It should be a fun car for its next owner.

From the Girling list, part number 390320-1W.

   7/8 inch bore.

These come up on ebay, but I don't know what the quality is like. As Keith says, only buy the best!

I gather that these are both Bucklands? If you would like a free advert for EL1205 on the aclitre.com website, please get in touch.

I'm glad to hear that the mod works well. I'm amazed that the spring binding problem existed to start with, but there is usually a reason for everything. Of course, if you had leaf-springs, you would not have that bother :)

I notice that this car was auctioned prior to my above posting, on 6th April, for £11,500, by Charterhouse Auction.

Meanwhile, there is a white 1953 Saloon for sale in Germany. I think that this is the same one sold in the UK in recent years. Then (with a new reg. number) was for sale for a long period by a classic car trader in the Netherlands (they did a Youtube advert at the time). Now with another reg. number, it's available again:

There can't be many cars that come with spare head-gaskets as a major selling point! Looks nice though.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Rare sighting!

I should have added the location: Oadby, Leicester, UK. Half an hour later, a convoy of classics including the same AC passed by. You've never seen an enthusiast in such a panic to find his camera :)

General Forum / Autocar - Top 100 British Cars

The idea of these top 100s or top 10s, etc., is to start a lively debate that will never be resolved. I prefer to add some canned laughter to the articles, and sit back watch the fun. One can only assess a car's merits based on what it was designed to do. But Mini versus Ace? I know which one I'd prefer to do my shopping and holidays in!

But shouldn't we allow for tyre expansion due to rising temperature? Okay, I'll leave the room quietly :)

75mph in 4th gear = 3750rpm approx. going by the above data. Seems a little high revving for cruising. An over-drive may extend engine life, as well as the other benefits Keith mentioned.

If you get stuck for data, it is possible to measure and calculate the rate of a helical spring provided that it is not variable rate, tapered, etc. (it's a while since I've seen Ace front springs). You need 3 measurements:

"N", which is the number of free turns of the spring (i.e. not counting the end turns that don't flex).

"R" (inches), which is the mean radius, measured from the axis of the spring to the centre line of the wire. It's easiest to get this by measuring the outside diameter of the whole spring, subtract the wire diameter, then halve the answer.

"d" (inches), which is the wire diameter (this needs to be measured accurately because the rate varies with d to the 4th power).

   The equation is:

   (d x d x d x d x 187500) divided by (R x R x R x N)

The answer is in pounds per inch, calculated for steel springs.

I've passed this information onto other 2 Litre owners I know. Do you have any "ballpark" figures for likely cost, for any given production run?

I'd jump at the chance if I could (for the postwar 2 Litre), but finances won't stretch that far at the moment. Ian.

428 Frua Forum / Quentin wilson smart buy : AC428
« on: February 12, 2014, 17:11:55 »
Back in the 1980s classic car boom, the 428 seemed to lag behind in the values, before surging later. I recall that they were selling for about £7k in the mid '80s when Cobras had swept passed £40k. I thought the Frua a bargain at that time, but I was a humble student, otherwise I would have been tempted. As for riding 2 foot stones - that is certainly a testiment to the strength of the separate chassis. Nowadays, many cars are written off ("totalled") after a collision with a hedgehog!
