ACOC News and Events / National Day
« on: June 18, 2019, 14:55:40 »
Many thanks to Team Goose and all the others who contributed to this year's National Day.  I gather from those who were able to attend that the weekend events were also much appreciated.  46 ACs were present from Vintage to Frimley - an excellent turnout.

ACOC News and Events / Bangers and Cash
« on: June 12, 2019, 08:02:01 »
It was great to see Russ Swift on the last episode of 'Bangers and Cash' on the Yesterday TV channel.  The story was about Mathewsons selling a Pilgrim Sumo with a Cortina engine (!) but Russ had a slot to show what real ACs are about.  Like the rest of the series, it was nicely done.

Does anyone know the location of the Greyhound chassis number stamp?

John Goose has not found it and previous registrars and a few owners are also uncertain.

General Forum / E10 Fuel Consultation and Survey
« on: August 15, 2018, 12:08:19 »
Message from the FBHVC:

The Department of Transport has issued a consultation document on the subject of introducing higher levels of ethanol in petrol.

Many older vehicles are likely to suffer damage and possibly dangerous fuel leaks if the E10 grade of petrol is used without modification to their fuel systems.

This consultation is focusing on vehicles more than 25 years old.

Whilst wishing to introduce the higher ethanol level E10 grade of fuel, the Government are proposing to guarantee a 'protection grade' of petrol at the E5 grade that is equivalent to the currently available 95 RON petrol.  However this guarantee will only last until 2020 when further consultation will take place.

It is possible that on the introduction of E10 at the 95 RON level, the currently available 'Super' grades with an octane level of 97 RON or higher, will cease to be available.

The Federation has designed a survey on petrol usage in older vehicles which will provide valuable evidence in the consultation response.

Please complete the survey and help the Federation preserve our right to use 'Yesterday's Vehicles on Tomorrow's Roads'.

The survey can be accessed by clicking this link: https://paulc1.typeform.com/to/Bt7HKS

If you wish to read the consultation document and/or take part in the consultation it can be found by following this link:
https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/e10-petrol-consumer-protection-and-fuel-pump-labelling

The FBHVC survey will close on 31 August 2018 in order to collate the results for the Federation's response to the consultation, which itself closes on 16 Sept 2018. A copy of the response will be made available on the Federation's website.

General Discussion / Updating Photo Links
« on: April 20, 2018, 09:31:55 »
A few hardy souls (not least Nik) have started updating photo links.  It isn't too difficult but is time consuming.  You can only edit your own posts and links:

- open the post you wish to edit
- click 'Modify'
- delete the old Photobucket link
- click the '+' next to 'Attachments and other options'
- go to 'Attach', browse for photos and attach the one you want; repeat as required
- click 'Save' bottom right

Please let me know if this is not clear!

Background
Many owners of the AC 3000ME will be aware of the efforts by the AC Owners' Club Council to ensure the continuing availability of spare new gears of an assured quality.
The Council have agreed that Thames Ditton Spares Ltd will sponsor and finance the manufacture of 10 pairs of the gearbox input shaft and gear, and the corresponding layshaft gear. This is the minimum economic order.
The input shaft and gears will be manufactured by Hewland Engineering Ltd. Hewland made the original AC 3000ME gear sets, and also two successful batches of final drive and 5th gear spares in 2007 and 2014. Hewland still hold the original AC design and Hewland manufacturing drawings. The materials and specifications will be as close as possible to the 1970s originals, whilst utilising Hewland’s current equivalent high-quality material and latest manufacturing processes. Manufacturing processes, heat treatment and quality control will benefit greatly from the considerable advances in Hewland's technology since the mid-1970s.
The Offer
Input shaft and layshaft gear pairs will be priced as follows for orders confirmed by 21st February 2018.
i)   To ACOC Members - £1,650 per pair including VAT @ 20%;
ii)   To non-ACOC Members -   £2,000 per pair including VAT @20%;
iii)   Deposit - £500 per pair with order;
For ACOC Members, the above pricing is at cost.
Any gears not 'pre-sold’ in this way will be held in stock by Thames Ditton Spares Ltd and sold with a mark-up of approx 20% on the above prices.  There will be an additional charge at cost for postage and packaging, to be included in your final invoice. This will be issued when the gears are ready for delivery, currently expected to be end August 2018.
Noting the use of modern equivalent materials and latest production methods, the finished gear pairs will conform with AC and Hewland original drawings in respect of materials, dimensions, tolerances and heat treatment.  Neither Hewland Engineering Ltd, Thames Ditton Spares Ltd, or ACOC, can accept responsibility for any other aspect, either direct or consequential. This is a condition of sale, the acceptance of which is implied in the placing of an order.
If you wish to take up this offer please forward a deposit of £500 per gear pair ordered, by cheque payable to Thames Ditton Spares Ltd, and your ACOC Membership number, to John Spencer, ‘Lindisfarne’, Upton Scudamore, WARMINSTER Wiltshire BA12 0AQ.
This offer is open until 21st February 2018.

General Forum / DfT Guidance Historic Vehicles
« on: December 19, 2017, 10:57:16 »
FBHVC Press Release:

Department for Transport (DfT) Guidance on Substantial Change of Historic Vehicles.

   1.   The Guidance sets out the definition of a Vehicle of Historic Interest (VHI), vehicles which will, from May 2018, be entitled to be exempt from taking a vehicle (MoT) test.

   2.   The Guidance reflects the outcome of intensive discussions between the DfT and the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC). FBHVC wishes to express its appreciation of the open and collaborative manner in which the DfT approached these discussions.

   3.   In the discussions FBHVC was careful to take account of all possible members of the historic vehicle family.

   4.   The Guidance supersedes all previous potential criteria released for discussion by DfT.

   5.   The Guidance makes clear that it does not in any way affect DVLA’s registration criteria and processes which remain unchanged.

   6.   The Government included motorcycles in the Motor Vehicles (Tests) (Amendment) Regulations 2017. As the Guidance implements the Regulations, DfT could not accept FBHVC’s representations, based upon the requirements of the EU Directive, regarding historic motorcycles, so they are included in the Guidance.

   7.   Following STRONG representations by FBHVC, a vehicle may generally be a VHI if relevant changes were undertaken more than 30 years previously. This will be a rolling 30 years and replaces the fixed 1988 date previously proposed by DfT.

   8.   Major points of note are:
   a.   The process is one of self-declaration.
   b.   Owners will only be required to declare their vehicle to be a VHI if they wish to be exempted from an annual MOT Test.
   c.   All vehicles will still be able to be tested if their owners wish
   d.   The criteria are generic and permit changes made, less than 30 years prior to the declaration, which improve efficiency, safety, preservation or environmental performance.
   e.   Those vehicles registered on a Q plate, as kits or built up classics are not entitled to be declared as VHIs until forty years after they were registered.
   f.   For motorcycles only the criteria of Q plates, kits and built up classics prevent declaration as a VHI.

   9.   The Guidance refers to “a marque or historic vehicle experts”. A list will be published on the website of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs by 30th April 2018. Vehicle owners wishing to confirm if they may declare their vehicle as a VHI, may choose to contact the appropriate nominee from this list

   10.   FBHVC will be explaining the Guidance in full in its first Newsletter of 2018 and as soon as possible on its website at www.fbhvc.co.uk.

   11.   Text of the Guidance is at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/668274/vehicles-of-historical-interest-substantial-change-guidance.pdf
