Jim -

Love to hear it - those were some of the last years to do cross-country before the Interstates were all connected. In an Ace - super! I would be interested in any other Ace owners  you might have connected with in Massachusetts.

tom i - first cross country trip from MA to CA in December of '68 in a '66 Ford Galaxie.

Rob - Hi - Tom Innes here in AZ

$145k has to be a world record asking price for an Ace-engined Aceca, no?
I do not know this car but it is an identical color scheme to BE772 which I have owned for about 8 or 9 years. It will be interesting to see what information accompanies the car when it arrives at F-J.

I was just up in the Bay area last weekend  to see my son and family but didn't get over to Emeryville to drool!

Its a little hard to tell from the photo, but this looks like Iris Rouge which is the original color of my '58 Ace - it does appear slightly metallic.

Peter - a couple questions and a wild hare -

Does the engine idle OK when started from cold? How about when re-started while still hot?

Is it possible that this is an electrical problem, e.g. a bad/resistive connection that lowers the effective voltage  to the fuel pump? When you increase throttle the effective voltage to the pump would also increase.

When starting from cold, the idle speed may be just higher enough that the fuel pump can do its job. What happens if you simply let the engine idle for several minutes until the starting carb shuts off?

I did say it was a wild hare - good luck!

Peter -

These are great memories - especially since the Mt. Washington event may not be run again.

My Ace, AEX456, was purchased new in New Hampshire by a fellow named Shelby Walker. Mr Walker apparently raced and hill-climbed the car for a number of years before selling it to another fellow from MA named Tom Ellsworth (also a member of this esteemed group). The car is "substantially" original, having been re-painted once in the '70s or early '80s. If you come across a burgundy color Ace in your collection it could be AEX456. I would love to see pictures of the car from that era.

   Thanks and regards - tom i AEX456, BE772

Bob - It can be long tedious process to track down our cars' histories. Read Keith L's saga re BEX333. There are a couple possible sites that have info for '50s/60s US racing. Try www.coldplugs.com for photos of the northeast scene and www.racingsportscars.com for somewhat wider coverage. The latter has grid lists for many SCCA sanctioned events particularly on the west coast. As you point out no one kept track of chassis #s, but you might find some link that will give a clue. Do you have any of the prior ownership history? In my case (AEX456), the ownership was clear back to the original sale in Concord,NH and I was able to contact a friend of the first owner who still remembered racing/hillclimbing against my car. This fellow still has his Ace which was purchased from the same dealer.

   Good luck with your search!

BEX235 seems like a relative "bargain" with the Bristol 100D included! It will be interesting to see what happens with the 3 cars that will be auctioned in AZ next month.

The eBay listing looks very suspicious - car is listed being in Georgia and photos showing the Canepa license plate holder are deleted. Also no reserve indicated. This smells very bad.

There are two Acecas currently on eBay - AEX672 and BE575. The former was just displayed at the Amelia Island show this past weekend. The latter has been converted from its original Bristol engine to a 289. Both appear to have had extensive restorations at some point. AEX672 is listed as BuyItNow at $115k and BE575 at $65k.

oops - BE575 has been removed early from eBay - this car got quite a bit of chatter on the daily "Bring A Trailer" web-site.

Keith -

If you don't mind getting sidetracked for an hour or two there are a couple of websites that I have found that may have something for you. One of them - www.coldplugs.com has fascinating photos from the 50's and 60's of some of the well-known east coast tracks - Watkins Glen, Bridgehampton, Thompson - the latter two no longer exist. There is a shot of the starting grid at Thompson, I think, that shows one of the  track marshalls sitting in his BMW 507!  The other - http://wsrp.ic.cz has starting grids and finishing results for SCCA sanctioned races on both coasts from the early 50's to mid-60's.  It is easy to get lost in the nostalgia coming across simple entires such as  "Chapman     Lotus 7", or " J.Dean     Porsche 550". Lots of AC Bristol entries, but I do not recall seeing J. Parsons listed - but then i did not go thru every race, every year!

Good luck with your continued efforts to track down the history of BEX333.
