Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Carb Sizes for Zephyr
« on: April 10, 2012, 19:14:53 »
Thanks for the info James. I am understanding the listing correctly in that all of the above applications (except 1) used H4s and not H6s? I thought all of the 2.6 Aces used the 1.75" H6s.

Thanks for the info Nick. You have somewhat confirmed what I had calculated and I am thinking 3 HS4s will be adequate for a 2.6. For the 2.6 I had calculated ~255CFM required at 6000RPM (not that I would ever run at 6000, but I used it for the upper limit), and had an HS4 flowing 145CFM. This is slightly different than your 133CFM, but either way with 3 of the HS4s I get 399cfm or 435CFM which should be adequate for a naturally aspirated 2.6. In your case where you are only using 2, the swap to the HS6s makes sense, but I think I would be OK unless I am missing something.
The one thing I am still not sure of is throttle response for SUs. For down draft carbs, (which is where my experience is) if you run lower CFM carbs that still meet the upper RPM range, you typically get better throttle response than running an oversized carb. However, I am not sure if this holds true for SUs.

Here are the pics Keith forwarded to me. Hopefully, I posted them with the correct IDs. Jerry, you are correct, that is the website Ken was referring to.

Ken, I believe that web site is run by someone that scours the web and posts pictures he finds as I did not send him any of the pics he has for AEX 125, but I took all of them. In the case of AEX659, he may have found incorrectly identified pictures and posted them. Perhaps you can contact the web site owner directly and find out where he found the pictures and get things corrected.

Phil, Tim Isles is the AC engined Ace registrar and frequents the forum and will probably have any known history on the car. As for the Bristol conversion, I would think that would add value, but others may think differently.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Rear Ends
« on: February 19, 2012, 14:57:42 »
Thanks Keith and that is consistent with what I had found in books. The reason I ask the question is I recently found some info that alluded to the last 2 years of Aces having the Salisbury rear ends instead of the ENVs. I have found no other confirmation, so I am guessing the salisbury information is in error.

The point you and others have made about decisions taken in the 60s and 70s is a good one. However given the Ace's value and rarity today, I just can't fathom why someone would want to destroy an original car to create a replica of something else. Sticking an Ace chassis number on a Kirkham merely invites ridicule, and papers for historic racing don't depend on a historic chassis number.

Anyway there's no accounting for taste. Let's hope a 2.6 isn't being used as a basis for this new creation![V]

In many cases, an original car may not be "destroyed" as mods have occurred over many years that have taken the car to a completely different configuration. A case in point is AEX1078 which currently sits as a chassis that had a V8 installed and suffered from significant other changes over its life For <$3k, I can have another V8 power train, or can go back to original (with different AC engine) which will likely set me back on the high side of $20K. Which makes financial sense? If I want to drive and enjoy my car in the short term, going with a V8 makes sense. If I want to go for resale value, then finding an AC engine would make more sense. The bottom line is, it all depends on what an owner's desire is, not what others think that drive what a person does with their car.
For the record, I agree that modifying a car that is still original would be a sacrilege, but I believe that is no longer the norm except for some 428 cars.
On the related note of using an Ace Chassis number on a Kirkham, there are some reasons that might be done. In California, the state makes it very difficult to register replica cars and so people look for ways to get there cars registered. In the case of the Kirkham, the person may be doing this so he can drive his car and has no desire to go racing.

Gus,
I bought a steering hub assembly from Moss motors that I have on 1078. The spline is a direct fit, but the tightening collar is different from the Ace. Not sure what steering wheel you have, but the Moss hub has 9 screws for mounting the wheel, so if you have 6, it may not work. If you need one, I can take a pic and send it.

Keith,
I can at a minimum coordinate the initial requests from this side and will send you a separate e-mail with names a and requests. I will have to think about handling of the monetary coordination, but we can deal with that when we get there. I have not had a chance to call Ron Leonard but will try and do that on Monday.

Keith, There is some interest from some folks over on the Club Cobra forum and there are a few people waiting to be approved on this forum so they can contact you directly. From the responses, it looks like there will be another 6 wanted, and an aditional person has asked me to up my order to 3 to cover one he wants. Hopefully this will not confuse things, and I will try and track those requests to make sure we do not have double requests. There was also a comment from one person who said he had contacted Ceandess in the past and they said they could not find the pattern for the proper button. Hopefully that is old news and they have found the correct button pattern. Thanks again for pulling this all together.AEX125 and 1078 are looking forward to have new correct gas caps.

I am home now to check my cars and John is correct. The set screws are as he states, and Glen has probably figured that out already. Hope Glen was successful with the removal.
