Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Edmund Hamburger's car?
« on: March 05, 2011, 04:30:28 »
Tim;
Edmund Albert Hamburger and Arlene J Hamburger own the house at address and phone number deleted at Tim Isles' request - Bryan He's 83, so hopefully his memory is still clear.  Several "AC old timers" who might have raced with him in the 50's, Jack Spees and Peter Dechert, were also involved with Hap Dressel.

Racing sports cars.com has a "Hamburger" as co-driver at Lime Rock (Conn.) August 15, '59.   You could also check the Motor Racing Museum at Watkins Glen, they have huge amount of material:  http://www.racingarchives.org/

Please post if this develops any new info,  photos etc.  I'm on the east coast and rarely get over that way.

Suspect this Aceca will go the way of BE 774, on offer at --wait for it--140,000 pounds:

Rather than attempting to get it all straight again, just order up a nice new aluminum body, drop in a Bristol, and now you have a $220,000 authentic AC Ace, with a profit margin for the job of $$$ ????.   Same thing happened to the 428, with a number become 427 Cobras.

Roger,
   This was /is Ben's email:
    Kinnertoncourt at talktalk dot net
Are you in the UK or ??  Ben's outside Oxford, but as there are now numerous converted Aces/Acecas worldwide, Ben could also likely put you in touch with an owner for an inspection/ test drive.

Brian, why isn't Ben listing his conversion in the small ads? One conversion sale would pay for years of advertising on this site... along with a link to a You Tube video that might show step by step installation of the rack.

Lew,
Keith is right about grease, but I'd advise taking it a step further: undo all the shafts and suspension pins f&r that are greased and check for dried old grease that may block one side of the grease passage on the suspension pins, in the passages of the bronze thrust washers and/or possibly some of the four passages in each ujoint.  Broke a rear hub carrier years ago when the lower pin locked up- Sure I had greased it but the one end was blocked by old dried grease. The ujoints are common item and are worth replacing if at all questionable.  Pulling and disassembling the half shafts also allows a look at how they fit & are lubed 50+ years on. Suspect you'll also find at least one grease tit is bent, or has a broken spring.
Good luck with your Aceca, may you have many miles of fun with it.

Roger,
Might consider solving two problems by going with Ben Yates's rack and pinion conversion. Ben could tell you the actual setback from the spring A frame of the rack vs. the existing steering idler arm.

Steven,
If you find a MG source(s) for the Aceca star latches please post details, as while the earlier thread gave the interchange with the MG coupe, it didn't indicate if any were actually available. Seems unlikely this is the only latch interchange- so if someone knows other vehicles, please post.  Might check the Rover P4, as the outside door handles interchange with the Aceca.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace / Aceca Bishop Cam steering
« on: September 24, 2010, 03:43:39 »
Simon,
I had the privilege of driving Ben Yates' Ace up the street in possibly 2001 and would agree that R&P really makes a significant difference vs. the Bishop cam setup.  At the time I had several concerns about the set up, mostly stemming from my location on the left side of the Atlantic- as Greg is as well.

The rack Ben uses as I recall was from a ‘80s-90’s Morris Metro or something like it, which I assumed was built  primarily for use with right hand drive.   Adapting this to a left hand drive, the availability of replacement bits/rebuilt racks, and redoing the horn & turn signal were questions that have kept me from going further with R&P.

I recall Gus mentioning he had gotten one for his Aceca rebuild. Who else among our US /Canadian cohorts have you and Ben made  believers?    Would also appreciate your comments on the concerns I mention.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Wheels wanted
« on: March 03, 2010, 18:25:52 »
Jay,
On Ebay there's five days left on set of four 16" wheels for $500 + shipping from outside Chicago.
   http://330408382478

However I highly recommend spending the bucks on new so the wheel splines and spokes are fresh. Wonder about the state of your hub splines that carry those 13" wheels; hopefully these haven't been messed up. Possibly get the hubs magnafluxed to check condition.

Bottom line is you've got an expensive antique that requires conservation and maintenance just like a painting, or an oriental rug.  Check recent forum postings on securing new wheels and appropriate tires from the UK for pretty reasonable prices.

Possibly next time Stuart and Robin's invaluable experience and knowledge can be captured on video and shared with all of us worldwide. It's also easy enough to do this as a webcast, so those of us here in the States or Australia, or ?? could participate too.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AEX416 - AC Ace history?
« on: November 01, 2009, 20:39:38 »
Will,

There's a Thomas D. Behnke, born 1933, living on Buena Vista Road  in Rockbridge, Ohio 22832.  For his phone number and street number feed his name into zabasearch.com. - I don't want to list it here.

Might also if this isn't the right Behnke give Ron Leonard a call as he may have sold the previous owner Behnke parts or have listed your car in his "AC Exchange."

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca door striker/latch
« on: September 16, 2008, 19:06:43 »
Greg,
If Robin's referral to Vintage Car Parts isn't successful for the Aceca star shaped door striker/latches, possible the following will be helpful:   The exterior chrome door handles are interchangeable with Rover P4, so possibly both vehicles may have used the same latches.  The AC parts list published in '62 lists the Aceca door latch/locks as 3/4875 (left) and 3/4876 (right).  Possibly someone with access to a Rover P4 (at a car show?) can verify interchangability.  There are several net venders who do supply bits from Rover breaker vehicles.  Incidentally, tried PM you, your email doesn’t work.

NOS (New old stock) 130 MPH Smiths speedo with clock - hard to believe its been sitting all these years- The US seller appears to have an unblemished record, and as the listing says "Why rebuild?"
