Good news: by a process of elimination the pre-war registrar has identified the vehicle as four seat tourer L245.

The less-good news: the ACOC has no knowledge of its existence or ownership since it was ex-works. But it may still be out there.

Engine bay aluminium panelling is natural unpainted aluminium. If a 2.6, fibreglass foot boxes were black. Boot interior sprayed silver. Door hinges body colour. Chassis metalwork black. Can't remember about bonnet underside or wheel arches, others should be able to help.

A copy of "Original AC Ace and Cobra" by Rinsey Mills is well worth the investment, not easy to find though.

For a fraction of the book price you could join the club and talk to real AC people and look at their cars.

That club stand photo was taken quite a few years ago - maybe 15? - it was organised by Eric and Irene Gates, very hard-working members. The carpet tiles and other paraphernalia were stored in Eric's loft and had to be retrieved and stored repeatedly over the years, not bad going for a chap of advancing years. In those days we had a hard core of about a dozen helpers, plus the car owners, who shared the building and manning of the stand over the four days. Hard work but good fun. Where are all the volunteers now?

Not offensive, Colin, just disappointing.

I am sure that the organisers would have jumped at the offer of a part-restored car, they have attracted lots of interest in the past and it shows the public that it is not all about the gloss and the glamour.

The way to learn about the cars is to get involved, you will meet some great club members and some interesting show visitors. When time permits, do volunteer.

As a veteran having assisted at 26 shows in the past I know only too well how difficult it is to get Members to offer their cars for display for the 4 days. If there are 4 Cobras this year, that is no mean achievement. Did you offer your car?

It is terribly demoralising for the volunteers who undertake these tasks to be constantly criticised (by anonymous posters) for their efforts on your behalf. If you think you can do better, why not volunteer?

We have 600 Members, of which about 10% are active in the Club. I think we do a good job in the circumstances. Rant over.

"those who find it a waste of time should play elsewhere."

Here here. What contribution have you (Pedant) made apart from criticisms?

Or a pair of dividers and a bit of cardboard to double-check?

Hi Gary, can you not measure it? It is made up of two figures, the number of studs/bolts and the diameter in mm of the circle drawn through them. Say, 5 x 100. You could use tins from the kitchen cupboards to work this out. Sorry if you know this already.

Hello Malcolm, thanks for posting your enquiry.

I have had a quick look at the register of cars and cannot find a pre-war car with that registration. The factory register did not always record the original registration number, or indeed the original registration number may have been changed and if the car still exists today it may have a yet different registration number now. The government MOT history checker website does not recognise the number currently.

BUY310 is a Worcestershire number I think, whereabouts did the ownership take place? If you could private message me (click on my name on the left hand side of this message) with a copy of the photo I can pass it on to the registrar to see if it rings any bells. Graham.

Luke, standard colours listed in Rinsey Mills' "Original Ace and Cobra" book, taken from a factory sales brochure:

Black*, Red, Maroon, Bright Blue, Beige, Grey/blue, Cream. * = offered with black upholstery.

He also lists a representative selection of colours as:

Middle Brunswick Green, White*, Svecia Red, Gunmetal, Dragonfly Blue, Pacific Green, Mist Green, Silver, Oxford Blue, Heather Metaline*, Vermillion, Mail Red*, Steel Blue Metaline, Black Pearl, Rouge Irise.

Hope that helps (to confuse matters!).

Mine was painted a Porsche silver.
