Unfortunately I've hardly seen any cars with your earlier dashboard layout, however having seen the close-up pics it does look a bit different. I know the factory had a continuous programme of improvements and would happily add extras if required for any brand new car or existing owner, yet although it's only a guess I wouldn't have thought that much would have been altered in the basic package offered between CF 7 and CF 9.

In the pic above of CF 7 it's hard to tell if there's a clock or not in the central console, however it is angled back whereas yours looks to be upright - obviously for the airco.

Fortunately, I am the current owner of CF 7 and I can comment on this.

OK, currently #91;and as we received it from Mr. Whitlam from London#93; the upper part of the instrument panel is as pictured. It has the angled back top center swich panel, and the driver's instrument cluster has a 8 guage cluster including: Speedo, Tachy, oil temp, oil pressure, fuel, water temperature, clock, Ampmeter. The clock #91;surprisingly enough#93; is top and center in this guage #91;I would have put the water temp flanked with oil pressure and oil temp personally#93;.

Where the current panel differs is below the central vertical divide of the panel... In the picture above there is a "J" shaped central portion which includes the heater controls and an ash tray... In CF 7 currently, this panel is different, it has a flat panel which fits the contours of the upper more closely, and includes the heater controls and a space for a radio, and a cigar lighter, the ashtray is now mounted on the transmission hump directly on top of the carpet.

If you haven't already have a look at some of the interior pics on the Register for comparisons as well.
The switches on your central console are the same as on CF 7 although it looks like they replaced the window lift switches with the same switches used for the windscreen washer moter on CF 7. CF 7 also does NOT have A/C so the upper center panel is entirely different as a result.

The steering wheel looks very much aftermarket to my eyes, and the instruments themselves do not seem to be as well matched as the set in CF 7.

Well, you have my opinion... =) As I said the central bottom of CF 7's panel was modified between the time it was tested in all those magazines and the time Mr. Whitlam offered her for sale. Overall I prefer the current lay out to the "J" shaped center bottom panel.

Can't help with the colour question I'm afraid....

Lighting is going to be a problem for photos #91;and it's a coupe too which restricts shooting angles, but I'll see if I can take a few if I get the chance...

As for color, I can't help you any more than Cass can... Other than to say, I would not be particularly enamoured of the Frua in White. Too plain Vanilla for me. The Frua looks great in nearly any color #91;Pink and white would be a couple of colors I'd try to avoid#93;. I'd recommend looking at the various colors other Frua's are displayed in the registery that Cass is working on, as well as some of the articles I and others have posted for ideas, if you're going to change colors.

I'll see if I can get some snaps taken, but I have been fighting the flu the past week #91;nasty business that#93; am not 100% and I still have Christmas shopping to do and all that.

   Hello,

To answer the question to sent via eMail, it happened at or before the time I posted the last scanned article "from Autocarriers to ..."

And the icon for Editing [outlined in red above] was not being shown to me for my own posts, so I could not edit them...

Now, just as mysteriously as when it disappeared, the editing icon has returned and I was able to fix that post.  I don't know what's going on with that.

As I have another small scanned article to post, I'll edit my "complaint" post to instead show the remaining scanned article I have.  Eliminating any need for clean-up on that page/thread.

Sorry for any inconvenience on your part.  I was not working, now it is.

Unfortunately I have no idea as to which magazine this article was clipped from [but it was probably from the same magazine as the previous couple of scanned articles I've posted].  Sorry, that was how I bought it...

The good news [from my viewpoint] is that it has a rather nice three-quarter's rear shot of UPG 428F [CF 7] which now resides in my Garage...

Larger scans in a variety of sizes are located here...:

« on: November 30, 2007, 17:22:53 »
GREAT information everyone,  I'm so pleased that BPH 4B is back on it's wheels and roadable again.

I agree with Nik, that as beautiful as the Daytona Coupe is, I've always preferred the lesser known and I feel more elegantly styled LeMan's coupe.

   Cheers!

Re the black stick-on number plate in fact it was quite common practice to have them in the UK back in the Sixties and I still enjoy seeing them today on sports cars from that era. So as it's definitely authentic and very period (see your number plate pics of the Le Mans Coupe BPH 4B as well), I've definitely no problem with them at all. Equally I'm sure there's plenty of ways of protecting the paint these days....

You're certainly right.  Oh, I have no doubt that it was commonplace back in the day and I'm sure it stirs up fond memories, but I've always had a thing about mussing up the paint.  Whenever I am driving and hear a rock hit I always say "let it hit chrome or glass, because I hate paint chips!"

Would it not be allowed in the States ?

Well, in the states only a fraction of the states require front plates.  Illinois does, Florida doesn't [most police jurisdictions prefer front and rear plates because they can see you coming or going, and if you do a hit and run there is twice the chance you'll leave an incriminating plate behind in the flotsam and jetsam.

But "Sticker" license plates have never been available/made here in the USA, they've always been made out of stamped metal [originally steel, then galvanized steel as multi-year plates became more the norm [yes, many states issued new plates EVERY year [some still do!], Illinois first "5-year" plates were in service for 8 years, the second "5-year" plates were used for 15 year, we're on our third sets now.]

Now I have a query about UK plates...  Is is possible to get "mock" UK plates which look authentic but are merely for display only.  I'd love to get a UK plate that read:

"AC 428 F" for example or "AC428CF7" or even "AC 428" just for display or car show purposes.

Is there anyway to create/obtain a mock plate?

Finally I'm left somewhat puzzled by this one. I'm no expert but as it's such a clear picture I'm wondering why Frua didn't extend the grille or mesh itself all the way down to the bottom of the middle opening ? It's not a visible area normally so surely that would have improved perhaps even solved the overheating problems ?

I don't know on that one either, Cass, Sorry!

P.S. I'll try to post another article today or tomorrow!

A replica of the enthusiast....I sincerely hope not!

A Replica, or a Restoration [as best as can be achieved with the current and recent parts availability]?

Just curious.  I'd really love to learn more about the LeMan's coupé.  For in my opinion it's a VERY beautiful car, and in fact, I prefer it's styling to the Daytona Coupe.

Wouldn't it be great to have a head to head test of a Daytona Vs. LeMans Coupe?

Another thought, really can't remember clearly seeing the number plate as a plastic strip on the bonnet before at all, but I must say I now really like it as it shows the front end's graceful style off to perfection !! In turn I now realise how much I dislike the old number plate's position as it really detracts from it !
As much as I would like to keep the radiator inlet free of obstructions for proper and plentiful airflow, I'd never stick ANYTHING on the paint!  Rules, regulations, laws bedamned!

I personally would rather accumulate the written warnings for not having a proper front plate displayed.

Incidentally, is that a little chin cover I spy?  Perhaps to funnel air to a Transmission cooler?

Just found this story on the AC LeMan's Coupe...

   http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/magazine/3200.asp?id=11841

Apparently it was wrecked when a rear tire [whoops tyre] blew and was hauled back to Thames Ditton and kept under wraps for many years.  Fortunately, an enthusiast from Scotland was able to secure the wreckage and was able to restore it...

As the story and pictures are copywritten, I have concerns about archiving the story on my site, so read it while you can!

Well, Neither the AC Cobras [et. al.] nor the Frua's seem to be congruent with a family man with small kids. It's more of a Single Man's or Couple's touring car. I could see it as an Executive/Businessman's ride though.
I was thinking generally, leaning towards increasing the MK 2's market share and not excluding those enthusiast family guys who might like to have their cake and eat it. Offering either a slightly longer body somehow or shortening the boot depth area to make much more use of the "neither one thing nor t'other" rear squab area which is really only suitable for small cases and odds and ends. In fact I've always thought this non mechanical area is the most overlooked and least thought out of all. A few more inches and possibly there'd be enough leg room to suit most 8 - 10 year olds ?
Perhaps European 8-10 year olds...  Most Yank [and Cannuck] Pre-"Tween-aged" youngsters are probably as sizeable as as "Tween" or even early teen-aged British youngsters these days.  Even when I was of that age [I was 11 years old when I visited the UK with my family] we ran into a school group of boys my age at Stonehenge and they were much closer in size to my then 7 year old sister than I was.  My folks asked me why I wasn't mixing with the local boys and I said "They are just little tykes!", to which my parents said "They are your age" I said disbelievingly "No! You're kidding!" but they were.  I'm sure I have some pictures my folks took at the time, I would have been André the Giant sized in their school...  And while I was one of the larger kids in my grade at school there were at least a half a dozen boys my height or taller, and a couple heavier.  This was in the spring of 1973 [my god! nearly 35 years ago now!  Hard to believe!]

However, I suspose one could "truncate" the Trunk [as it were] and might be able to scavenge enough room on the current back shelf for a bassinette, or perhaps for a Kindergarten aged child or maybe two for short trips, but I'd think it'd be a very tight and uncomfortable trip.  Otherwise one would have to elongate the body and passenger compartment along similar lines as the Jaguar XKE 2+2 or Datsun 2x0Z 2+2 models and I'm not sure a AC 428 Frua Mark II+2 would fare any better in the press or among customers any better than those models did.  But that's just me.

Of course if a Mark II was done as a Kit car, one could specify an even further stretched frame [perhaps an additional 6" or 12"] and then work on crafting a stretched body to match.  A Mark+2 would probably have a Squared off Greenhouse:

   Compared to the original [2-seater]:

[Thank you Datsun Z-Car's for stepping in to illustrate my thought] Unless, one was to spend a good deal of time styling for a better result.

I don't know...  I just think it'd be easier to walk [at first] before making a lot of changes.

But again, that's just my opinion...

   --  Chuck

P.S. I wonder how much trouble it would be to adapt a Z-Car's chin spoiler to provide a little more airflow into Mr. Frua's engine compartment...  Hmmm...  --  Chuck
