Correct not much room under the fender.  I already have a typical Cobra with race wheels etc so my choice for tires is Goodyear Power Cushion in pics above.
They were the street tire in the 60's and will handle well, as I am a stock 225hp stability should be fine. 
Will plan to wrap exhaust as dropping the under fender heat can only be a good factor for tires, alloy body and paint.

I know this is a long expired thread.....
Did you ever perform this task?  I am planning to repack bearings to avoid dry bearings and spindle fracture this month.
35year old car, 8000 miles indicates its sat for some time.

Ok, roadblock
With the current exhaust the sunburst gets tire within 1” of the SS muffler.
The FIA allows for the same 1.5” that the MKIV wheel does.
Will need to do more measuring but may use mag FIA ?
15” fills wheel-well out nicely.

Thoughts?

Now that you have made this change would you:

a) Say it was worth it to go FE?
b) If you have to do over would you pick a small block Nascar type motor as it gives the power and bolt up to stock position?

BTW I love the FE change...

I’ll have to go measure.
Think the same as the 60’s car as I have one of those too
With narrower tire should allow it to work?

Finally the wheel installed
The new boss and offset of the wheel works great
This finished bolt on change allows reversal to the OEM at any stage.
Cannot wait till Spring!

Next, Sunburst 15” wheels ......
