428 Frua Forum / "Car CF 12 where are you ?"
« on: September 05, 2007, 11:54:23 »
Does anyone remember the popular catchphrase "Car 54 where are you ?" from years ago ? Never did know where it came from, was it a TV programme....?

Anyway hope we get to hear all the exciting news and possible wants from the new owner of the ex Cyril Wicks gem soon ? The suspense is getting awful !! [:p]

Don't know if anyone's seen this one yet but as usual stumbled upon it whilst looking for something else. Great period atmosphere ! [8D]

428 Frua Forum / Mk I 428 body restoration/ New Mk II 428 ?
« on: August 05, 2007, 11:58:25 »
As always I'm definitely no expert but thinking back to Derek Hurlock and his early attempts to find a UK body supplier for the 428 before deciding on Frua, he apparently had also been considering one or two other suppliers as well such as Coventry Body Panels, or some closely similar name. In the end it was unfortunately low quality rust prone Italian steel which will I presume always pose a long term restoration problem ? Especially now that all 428's are some 30 to 40 years old and obviously are not going to last for ever.

Looking ahead and in the interests of their long term preservation coupled with originality, I'm wondering what future options owners might consider and go for regarding a possible replacement body when their old one becomes just too difficult or expensive to keep restoring any more ? Go for top quality steel or aluminium or.... ? Then perhaps approaching AC themselves (wherever they're based now) to make them ?

Be interesting to hear any owner's thoughts and views on this.

   Thanks [:)]

428 Frua Forum / Draft list of AC 428 Fruas known to date.
« on: June 30, 2007, 13:41:19 »
I know Andy is preparing a club list, however out of interest I'd also started putting my own personal rough list together some time ago based on what I'd been able to find and cull off both the Forum and the Net as well. Whilst it's still very crude and basic I've just realised that with all the resident knowledge and expertise available on here it might perhaps be of some help to the Forum as well, eventually creating a useful quick reference list of the total number of fastbacks and convertibles known worldwide at any given moment. Unfortunately I've just not had the time to go through all the Forum posts yet as there have been so many, so apologies to anyone if I've missed anything.

I can always delete it if no-one's interested ?

Just unearthed another magazine - "Thoroughbred & Classic Cars" April 1991. Andy Shepherd's scrumptious 428 in a Seventies supercar "Test Match" against a 1970 Aston Martin DBS, a 1971 Jensen Interceptor Mk II, a 1969 Maserati Ghibli and a 1980 Mercedes Benz 450SL.

428 Frua Forum / LTU 10G (CF 20) & 1446 JN ~ Early Fastback Pics
« on: June 19, 2007, 16:47:42 »
Unfortunately can’t find any other references anywhere to LTU 10G or what its chassis number is, nor the original registration and chassis number of 1446 JN....? Interesting note about the air scoop on 1446 JN as the pic looks like it must have taken in the late sixties or early seventies !

Still at least it’s a few more fastbacks pics on line to even up things a tad with the convertible lot ! [;)]

428 Frua Forum / 428/ Cobra conversion costs & Fastbacks ?
« on: May 05, 2007, 13:49:03 »
Given the occasional recent very disheartening mentions of 428's being converted into Cobras but not knowing a thing about all the different costs involved, I’ve started wondering just what sort of price a 428 has got to be in order to make a Cobra conversion hopelessly uneconomical ? Wouldn't this then represent the genuine market value of a 428 ? Whatever its condition as there were so few to begin with ?

Also just a personal opinion (!) but whilst the 428 is unquestionably the greatest and finest classic of all, everyone always seems to be talking about convertibles !! [:D] Doesn’t anyone like the Fastback as well which to me is so much more stylish, distinctive and the ultimate exemplification of Derek Hurlock’s original concept ?

It really leaves you wondering if there are any left at all ! [:)]

428 Frua Forum / Modern safety & security rules for 428's ?
« on: April 08, 2007, 16:48:10 »
[Paul and Chuck - posted this last April sometime before you joined so wondered if you perhaps had any thoughts on this ? [:)]]

Googling around a bit last night when I found this interesting item for a security key fob being marketed by GM for their latest cars, plus some other new ideas too ! [8D]

quote:
Volvo is planning a keyless entry system that can detect a heartbeat and alert the driver if someone is lurking inside the car.

   http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2006-11-15-remote-usat_x.htm

It also started me wondering what other, if any, modern safety and security solutions such as anti-theft devices etc. 428 owners might have already fitted to their cars, as well as what additional official requirements their particular country might or might not insist on before being passed as legally roadworthy.

Obviously here in the UK we've a massive number of rules for our official MOT Test though how they might be relaxed for a pre 1973 (is it?) 428 I haven't a clue. And I've often wondered how different and difficult it must be for 428's built after this date ? Bit unfair too really !

Either way I suppose some of the latest security and safety regulations in different countries are bound to eventually raise some awkward problems of originality and subsequent market values later on ?

428 Frua Forum / Some 428 history....
« on: March 09, 2007, 20:13:10 »
I don't know if anyone's ever heard of this car but I found a couple of old black and white photocopies of the prototype 4 seater Frua registered TPE 130M, plus one or two other pics. Unfortunately I've no idea where they came from as I must have had them at least 20 years or so.

   Bit like a Monteverdi ?

Plus a group photo of the 4 seater, a 428 fastback and the last red pop up headlight 428 Mark II prototype UPG 994M

The 428 in the middle might be the same as this one JLH 182K as it's just possible to make out the final letter K, plus the wheels are the same.
