Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / CSX 2484
« on: June 05, 2017, 17:10:12 »
A Cobra asserted to be CSX2484 is offered for sale in London ‘following a recent comprehensive restoration to FIA specification’. 2484 was destroyed in 1966, leaving no physical remains other than its documentation.

The 2484 now for sale was constructed in 2003 using the chassis discarded when 2343 was rebuilt as a Daytona Coupe, as recorded in the Register’s Replicas Appendix.

Any ideas as to car no 217's VIN? It's the Gutierrez/Dot 64 Shelby Cobra.

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / Racing Cobras - COB 6042
« on: November 10, 2015, 20:25:29 »
String, which had escaped to the Frua section, re-continued here

Recently unearthed evidence is that Derek Ridler's LEC racecar was 6042, bought by Ridler from barrister Peter Sheridan and sold when Ridler finished with it to racer Bill Wood.

6042 & 6045 were delivered on the same day to the same Central London (Knightsbridge) agent and registered at the same time. 42 got CLH 3B and 45 the preceding CLH 2B. Another distinguishing 6042 feature is its factory option 'top tint' windscreen, in place throughout its Sheridan/Ridler/Wood ownership.

See the register (members' area) for further info.

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / CS2030
« on: November 07, 2015, 12:35:01 »
It has now been established that 2030 has continuous history as a complete vehicle. The updated register reads:

AC Cars demonstration car. 4.2 Ltr engine. Instructions issued 12-9-62
RHD. Listed on Shelby American ledger as ""AC test car"".  Completed at Thames Ditton and not sent to the USA. Believed to have been the prototype rack & pinion car. Registered 1 Nov 62 and used by AC as factory demonstrator. Sold 18 Nov 63.

Severely damaged, believed to be front end collision followed by fire; log book stamped ‘insurance total loss payment’ (68/9). Salvageable components kept together, front end of chassis and front A frame replaced and new body made, with hood scoop, side vents and larger wheel arches. Purchased dismantled by Ronald Horsey (81).  Rebuilt with the new body, replacement 6 bolt 289 engine, non-standard dashboard, incorrect instruments, Ace-style seats, incorrect filler cap & 6” wheels. Rebuild completed in 84.

   [Shelby American/AC (63), D Cromby (68), Rupert Nuttall (71), John Southon (81)]
   "

As of 3 July, this is 965kg (http://www.fia.com/sport/regulations?f[0]=field_regulation_category%3A69).

To be compliant, some of the more recent interpretations would need to add over 100kg.

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / MkI, MkII & MkIII-70s & onwards usage
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:45:47 »
This string is for those interested in 70s and onwards Cobra descriptors (with issues lifted from the string that seeks further evidence regarding AC’s 60s terms).

At least two issues arise. In 70s and later terms:
  • Is a MkI a worm and sector car, or a 260?
  • Is a 427 a MkIII or not?

  •    ‘It's my understanding that MkI referred to the worm-and-sector leaf-spring Cobras, MkII were the rack-and-pinion leaf-sprung cars, and MkIII were the coil-sprung cars. Engine size was not the defining characteristic. Even if these were common references, not official factory labels.’ (SunDude)

‘.....in the 1970's / 80's ordinary members always referred to Mk1 Cobra's as the 260 engined cars, Mk 11 as the 289 cars and Mk 111 as the 289 coil sprung cars.’ (John Murch)

Perhaps SunDude, John Murch, Steve James, Trevor Legate and others could produce a collectively acceptable answer?

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / Thames Ditton Mk III Cobra?
    « on: November 17, 2013, 16:15:59 »
Ross Henry’s SLABSIDE thread has interesting Cobra terminology points. This thread, which follows on, is solely to establish whether there is any authoritative evidence, previously not available to historians, that AC Thames Ditton considered producing or produced a Mk III Cobra.

The authoritative period evidence available to the ACOC is as follows:
       1.   After starting coil spring production, AC referred to the leaf spring car as the ‘Mk I Cobra’.
       2.   AC headed the coil spring Shelby ledger ‘Cobra Mk II’.
       3.   Shelby American called the leaf spring car the ‘Cobra I’ and the coil spring car the ‘Cobra II’, but this designation was short-lived.
       4.   AC called the coil spring 289 model the ‘AC 289 Sports’.

No authoritative evidence has ever been seen that AC Thames Ditton considered producing or produced a Mk III Cobra or cobra-type vehicle.

The available evidence was last published in ACtion in 2003. As no new period material has emerged in the last ten years this string is a call to see whether anyone has anything authoritative hidden away.

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / Another Unidentified Cobra
    « on: June 03, 2013, 21:18:47 »
Aaron Gee sent me this photograph of an FIA Cobra testing at Silverstone three weeks ago:

The cobra is in the style of 39 PH (CS 2131), owned by Jon Minshaw from 02 to 06. 2131's current owner has no knowledge of the car pictured above.

The car's door reads 'Alan Minshaw' but the Minshaws haven't replied to a car identity enquiry.

I'd much appreciate any information that Forum users have or can acquire.

General Forum / The ACOC Logo
    « on: April 28, 2013, 13:56:41 »
Barrie writes that Club can’t use the previous AC logo as AC has rescinded the grant of the honour of its use. AC cannot rescind it because AC, through the Hurlocks, granted the ACOC the right to use the logo indefinitely.

This arrangement was accepted by all successor parties to AC until recently when, following fifty plus years of Club use, AC’s now directors decided to present the Club with a choice:  “either enter into a license agreement to use our logo ....... or remove the AC logo” or contest legal proceedings.

The Club could only enter into a licence agreement if it surrendered its existing right to use the AC logo and the proposed licence had conditions (such as an implied obligation to censor Forum comment) that were not acceptable. Further, the Council concluded that it was not appropriate to use and risk Club funds to enforce our right in law.

It is hoped that at some future stage AC’s directors withdraw their promise of proceedings against our Club, so that we can resume our use of our logo and rekindle a cordial relationship unfettered by legal threat.

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / FIA Appendix K ROPS Regulations
    « on: November 15, 2012, 13:19:44 »
2012 Appendix K mandates that period F (Thames Ditton) Cobras be fitted with six-point Roll Over Protection Systems when competing under FIA jurisdiction. Following forceful representations from the ACOC and other clubs and extensive FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission Technical Working Group(HMSCTWG) debate, revised proposals have now been approved by the HMSCTWG, the HMSC and the World Motor Sport Council.

Appendix K will be revised as of 1st January 2013 to allow Period F GTs, GTSs and GTPs to race with period roll bars, such as the forward single-braced roll bar that all period-compliant Cobras have. John Symes, MSA’s Technical Director, has been of great assistance in pushing the changes forward, and the result reaffirms the true values of historic motorsport.

If anyone would like yesterday’s MSA confirmation or copies of the March and April ACOC FIA submissions, please email me.
