Having trashed the diff back in March, the car was recovered by Thunder Road who set about removing it and had it rebuilt by their specialist.
FYI – it’s never a good sign when the drain plug is removed and lumps diff fall out.

Many new parts were used in the rebuild and while the diff was out I took the opportunity to have Al and Alec rebuild and refurb the rear suspension. Apart from normal weekend duties the car is used for European trips each year and had often developed a really annoying squeak when being driven for four or five hours at a time. The strip-down revealed a few worn bearings and the lower shock absorber bearing on one side had all but dissapered. Since the rebuild the squeaking has not returned – but I’ve yet to do a long drive.

Anyway, back to the diff, the first time it was fixed and refitted we were off to France within days for the Laon Historique
   http://www.continentalcartours.co.uk/documents/f-LHupdateApril.12_001.pdf

By the time we got to Northern France the problem started.  The problem was the LSD was locking on slow corners and also when driving out of junctions. This resulted in either the inner rear wheel hopping, spinning or some very unhappy sounds coming from the drive train. On returning to the UK T-R worked incredibly quickly to remove the diff (out in one day!) and sent it back to their diff man.

Turns out the diff was set to “race spec” ie it was too enthusiastic at locking up for road use. The diff was re-set and re filled with what T-R described as the “most expensive oil in the world” and refitted. I think they also used the recommended additive and the problem was instantly solved.

   Hope this helps

Hi Constant,
Thanks for posting some of your photos they are great, I’m looking forward to seeing more. Even though the it's less than two weeks since we returned it feels longer and I’m missing he open road, the occasional sunshine and the good fun of our group.

I hope you and Danny had better weather for your return trip ?
I will try and post a few of my photos.

Cheers – John and the Rev-Limiter.

FYI from Brooklands re: the Double Twelve. Please note this is separate to the club displaying our cars. Please email me if you would like info either for the display or competition - John.

   Dear AC OWNERS CLUB,

The Double Twelve Motorsport Festival is getting closer and we have some wonderful cars already entered but we still have many vacancies for the Concours on the Saturday. This year we celebrating several anniversaries: the Aston Martin Centenary, the centenary of the Vauxhall 30/98 and the 50th birthday of the glorious Mercedes-Benz Pagoda. We would also love to see representative cars that have raced at Le Mans as it is the 90th anniversary or the first running of that other 24 hour event! Bentley of course made their name at both Le Mans and the original Double Twelve and we are looking forward to seeing a mixed class of both pre and post war cars in this class. The other D12 classes cater for every sort of motor car as you now know but we have opened up yet another class for open wheel racing cars. Each class can accommodate 12 cars so do please get your entry in soon as these will fill up quickly I am sure. If you haven't already done so, do look at the links on the left and send in your entry! I'd be delighted to discuss your car if you have any questions.

The arrangements for this years Double Twelve have changed slightly allowing car owners to choose between entering only one of the events and either coming on the Saturday or Sunday for the Speed Trials, the concours or the driving tests or doing the full Double Twelve and entering two of the three sections: either the concours and the driving tests or the speed trials and the driving tests or even the speed trials and the concours! I hope that the new format will prove as popular as in previous years. The better flexibility offers more chance to come and enjoy the great atmosphere of Brooklands and take part in this historic motoring event. If you can please let me know about your entry as soon as possible or have any questions I would be happy to put you in touch with the event organiser if you are thinking of entering.

Hi Gus,
I have exchanged a few emails with BBK (Rob) and will soon be able to provide options and indicative costs for shipping to Europe for a short-term / temporary import of his Cobra.  I think the trip to the Pyrenees now has 12 cars signed up. We originally had 21 spaces on the trip (limited by the number of hotel rooms), but during March we will need to confirm and pay for the rooms and will then let the excess room go.

So if anyone is thinking of coming on the trip – don’t leave it too long.

The trip is 29th May – 7th June and I suggested to Rob, that if he does come to Europe it would be worth staying an extra few days to attend the Brooklands Double Twelve on 15th – 16th June

Some members enter the driving tests and concours etc and others display their cars. The club had a display at the event last year and we plan to have a bigger display this year.

We also have cold beer [:)]

I'm not aware of any problems, but I've not used it (yet).
I’m thinking of using the coolant. It’s called Evans waterless engine coolants and is promoted by Ed China the TV mechanic from Wheeler Dealers. I was at Race Retro the other week and had a long chat with Ed on the Evans stand. Also though my car does not exhibit cooling problems I understand there are additional benefits to using the product ie more effective cooling at hot-spots due to no localised boiling/bubbling, non-pressurised cooling system and better corrosion protection due to no water in the system.
The fluid is a replacement not an additive and I understand the most important thing is to make sure all water is removed prior to refilling. Evans supply a fluid to remove water, but they also recommend using an airline to blow as much water from the system as possible (including the heater core). I think the water removing fluid can be used a number of times if you plan on converting multiple cars. The actual coolant is almost a “fit and forget”.
Here are a couple of links FYI

There are a few points to update you on regarding the trip to the Pyrenees :
   •   We still have space if you would like to join the trip.
   •   The payment of the balance becomes due at the beginning of March.
   •   Those of you who expressed interested in the event and have not yet completed the booking form – please don’t leave it to the last minute as confirmation and payments for hotels and ferries will made soon.

   Thanks - John.

The Hales - Piper topic is a real can of worms and has the potential to affect many areas of the classic car hobby / sport. How many “star” drivers will be willing to race great cars on a “you bend it, you fix it” basis?
The topic is well discussed on the following links and there’s a donate button if anyone wants to help Mark Hales. I’ve met Mark, he’s a nice chap, I enjoy his writing and he’s a talented driver and doesn’t deserve this.

PS: I'm not looking to hi-jack this thread, so can I suggest a new tread if anyone is moved to comment.

Sorry, but I wrote rubbish the other day. The machining of the new 15 inch Hawk wheels was to get the correct fit with the spinner and not the hub.

42
I had a set of the Hawk wheels and Avon tyres fitted to my MkIV last year and I, like most people, had to have the track rods bent to make it all work. The guys that look after my car said they have to it virtually every time an owner has gone 16 inch to 15 inch (Hawk) wheels. I also had to have the mating face of the wheels machined to match the hub in order to get the correct fit, but all in all it was no big deal.
As Barry said, it’s what they did in period.
   John.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your kind words, I’m pleased you enjoyed it. It was a fun afternoons filming and we were very lucky with the weather as it was one of the few sunny days of the summer. The production company had the choice of two T-D Cobras and my MkIV, I think they chose TACO because it was the cheapest to insure for the shoot. In the end the production company’s  usual drive wasn’t too keen to drive it and they asked me at the last minute. We did four hours of filming to get the 90 seconds of screen time. The hardest part was driving behind the camera car. Apparently 10 feet from the camera looks like 100 yards on screen so I was asked to drive within 2 feet of the bumper (fender) at 60mph without looking at the car in front which I found quite hard.
If I can remember how to post photos I’ll post a pic of the car at the end of the last trip, otherwise people will think it’s a trailer queen.

   Cheers – John.

I think you’re missing the intrinsic beauty, the balance of harmony of design and the purity of a race-bred heritage. Surely all it needs is a respray in Guardsman blue a couple of white stripes and side exhausts and the job’s done.

On the other hand . . . . maybe it's "lost and unknown" for a very good reason. I would want to be the guy trying to sell it
