2nd fuel pipe routing into Solex fuel rail.

DPK - I've always assuemd the 2nd pump was more for scavenging whilst cornering that for increased flow, although it will enable both. When a second SU pump was fitted as an option it uses the 2nd tank pick up then route a separate pipe forward to a fuel filter (glass bowl type) on the inner LH wing, which is then T'd into the front of the Solex fuel rail. So the mechanical pump feeds the rear of the fuel rail and the electric SU feeds the front. The SU pump also allows you to prime the carbs prior to cranking the engine which is useful.

Robin,

Ah, thanks for this explanation. There appears little question then, that AC did build these chassis, contary to some of the comments on the 428 forum about information from the Hurlock family.

Personnaly, $37k for a genuine Thames Ditton chassis onto which to build an 'EFX' 427/8 Cobra doesn't seem like poor value. However the size of the task is huge, whilst it appears that there is the beginnings of a car, what there probably only represents 15% of a full car. But if it was built by the right people, and sourced some genuine period parts the car would be little different to a fully restored Cobra.

From my own research;

The Type 9 Ford 5-speed box will bolt up to the Zephyr iron bell housing, but it does leave you with the problem of the gear shifter too far rearwards. See dpk_cobra pics.

The Rinsey Mills book says the Ford engines used the Moss gearbox, with an over-drive and an alluminium bell housing. I can't find any Ford Zephyr ally bell hosuings offered anywhere, so this must be quite rare. But the gear shift is in the right position, and Moss gear boxes aren't too diffecult to find as they were used on many Jaguars. You might be able to do something clever with an iron Zephyr bell housing.

Ford made two versions of the Zephyr/Zodiac/Consul 4-speed box;

1) Zephyr Six (213E, 214E) ratios are 3.16, 2.21, 1.41, 1:1, R3.3
2) Zephyr Four (211E, 212E) ratios are 4.41, 2.35, 1.50, 1:1, R 4.67 – V low 1st gear not suitable for Ace. I believe these may also be Transit ratios.

I have seen these with over-drives, in fact there has been one on eBay advertsied for a long time, although it's a 211E and the seller would like £1,500.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373629826099?hash=item56fe12b433:g:-9gAAOSw0mdg2K0o

I've also thought an MGB 4 syncro gearbox with overdrive would be a good period option. They used these with the 1.8L and also the 3.5L V8 engines, it's a 1100kg car, so the box should be strong enough. The MG box has an integrated bell housing and is all alluminium, but I have no idea whether it would need an adaptor plate to mate up to the Ford engine and whether the depth of the bell housing would be compatible.

MGB ratios vary but popular is 3.44, 2.17, 1.38, 1:1, OD 0.82

Ace Bristol engines use the Bristol gear box - BWCR 12 which I believe is; 2.92, 1.82, 1.29, 1:1 - For reference.

Hi Peter, I've read the 428 page and the posts on Bring-a-Trailer, these debates always fascinate me if I'm honest.

Reading the orginal BaT posting, these chassis were provided by AC to a company called Eletric Fuel Propulsion in Detroit. EFP was based in Ferndale which is somewhat in the middle of the big-3's locations, although closest to GM's old head offices at Cadillac Place. Reading between the lines I think the Cobra chassis would have been chosen because it creates a good platform to build into a prototype. I work for Ford in the UK and these prototypes would be a called a 'Mule' (or 'Buck' if it's stationary).

There seems to be some debate as to whether the chassis were actually built by AC, but then I'd question whether AC would in fact build their own chassis on site (as they didn't build their own bodies) most car companies would assemble but not fabricate, as fab'ing steel with all the cutting and grinding is quite a messy business. I'd like someone to inform me whether AC did make their own chassis. So a possible explanation is that the chassis were sourced via AC for EFP, but may never have passed through the AC premises, although pure conjecture on my part.

Always a pleasure to see your updates. Your fuel tank build is very impressive. I had mended the leaks in my original tank and used an air mattress inflator, then sprayed on soapy water, but you're fully submerged technique is more thorough. Also interesting to note that Aceceas had a single fuel pick up where as Aces (certainly mine) have a pick up on each side, one for the mechanical pump and one for the extra electric pump.

I couldn't resist having a quick look at the wiring diag.

Power goes as follows;

1) Battery
2) Ammeter
3) Regulator
4) Lighting switch

A very quick sketch which I ran out of time to make look neater!

Always under the dif or the the front sub frame with a piece of soft wood, for me.

Bear in mind that there's realy no substantial tubing out board of that as the chassis tube don't extend forward of the front subframe or rearward of the differential frame. I know the Cobra's used quick jack points on the front and rear bumpers which makes me wince. It's not just about whether it can take the weight, but also not too flex the body too much you might crack paint etc..

Afternoon all, having now had Covid and recovered, perhaps I could ask my paint question again;

Is there a list of Ace colours with associated paint codes, particularly for the Reds ?

I think I'm after the Svecia Red.

Many thanks, James

« on: April 22, 2022, 18:06:19 »
Hi ladies and gents.

My work on BE475 continues and it's now at Classic Autos having some of the less than perfect period body repairs corrected. My impression is that some of these were fairly rapidly completed to get the car mobile and painted, ready for a further outing. We set outselves the task of keeping the patina whilst cutting out the 'ugly'. I think we found a ballance which is realy diffecult, becuase your initial reaction is 'lets do everything'. In my mind it would simply be impossible to do everything and keep the history.

Anyhow, as we get nearer to painting I have a questions, is there a list of RAL or similar paint codes for the Ace colours? I believe the car is currently Svecia Red, which is the colour I'd like to repaint it in.

Thanks James

Ah very interesting, our '58 car doesn't have the clock, but we know the car crashed out of the '61 Goodwood TT, and the alluminium dash was bent. I had put two and two toegther and assumed the original speedo was broken in the impact, and the speedo would then have been replaced probably in '62.. which would explain why it has no clock.
