Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / 2 Litre Saloon heater
« on: January 10, 2024, 12:38:35 »
Were any of these cars fitted with a heater from new? And if so, does any member own a car with an original installation?
I am buying a 2 Litre Saloon which has never had a heater, but as I live in Scotland I think I would be glad of one! I wouldn't want to fit anything which spoiled originality. so if I could get photos and specs. or maybe even take a look at the installation, that would be very helpful.

Has anyone else experienced problems with the Bluemels adjustable steering column on the Ace? For years the steering column had gradually moved towards my chest and periodically I slackened the bakelite clamping knob, moved it back and tightened the knob again. Recently, the bakelite adjusting wheel jammed, such that even the strongest wrists couldn't shift it, so the column was advancing relentlessly towards me and I could do nothing about it. Last time I mentioned this, another member was kind enough to send me a drawing of the mechanism and on the strength of that I finally plucked up the courage to dismantle mine today. Not wanting to apply any kind of wrench to the bakelite, which was sure to shatter, I instead removed the horn/indicator mechanism (easy) and used a puller to take off the boss from the column.

I was expecting to find corrosion, or a picked-up thread, or grit, or worn splines, but to my amazement everything looks as good as the day it was made and all the screw threads worked smoothly. I am mystified. Why did it jam? All I can do is clean it, lubricate it, reassemble it and keep my fingers crossed. Can someone explain?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Heat shield for Webers on 2.6 Ford
« on: March 24, 2018, 17:21:09 »
I've noticed that the engine on RSX5006 runs roughly when started from hot, presumably because when the car is stationary the carbs are upset by heat sink from the exhaust below. I looked at RS5033 at the Goodwood Members meeting last weekend and noticed that it had a heat shield under the carbs (if a lip were added, also very useful for stopping overflowing fuel reaching the exhaust if a float sticks). Does anyone have a pattern for this, or do I start from scratch? Also, as my car is LHD, I need to arrange some kind of quick-release for my throttle cable, as it will have to run through the shield.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Damper mountings
« on: March 10, 2017, 16:41:03 »
I have Avo adjustable dampers on the back of my Ace, but they are supplied with poly bushes and I think rubber would suit the suspension characteristics better. I have bought some rubber bushes from Brian Eacott but they are too large: they only fit the original Armstrong dampers which have a larger diameter eye. Does anyone know a source of smaller rubber bushes?

I have two problems with the adjustable steering column on my 2.6 Ace, RSX 5006. Firstly, it does not hold its adjustment but gradually extends towards the chest(I always set it as close to the dashboard as possible). Secondly, having adjusted itself, the black knurled knob that one unscrews to remedy matters refuses to unscrew except when persuaded by a VERY strong wrist. There is nothing visibly amiss, and nothing has changed (to my knowledge) since I bought the car in 1971, at which point it worked fine.

   Ideas anyone?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Needle rollers
« on: April 17, 2016, 22:18:53 »
Just a thought while my Ace is receiving some routine TLC on the steering and front suspension: has anyone ever replaced any of the plain bushes or thrust washers with needle roller versions and if so, what was the result? I appreciate that some machining might be required.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Tyres for 16 inch wheels
« on: March 11, 2016, 09:47:54 »
The Avon ZZ tyres on my Ace 2.6 will wear out before long and when they do I might change from 15 to 16 inch wheels. The Avons have proved excellent, but are only available in 15 inch sizes, so does anyone have an alternative to suggest? I don't want to go the van tyre route. The Blockley 185VR16 seems a possibility, but will they clear the bodywork when fitted to a 5 1/2 inch rim? I don't want to revert to 5 inch, my bodywork is not flared but it is subtly wider than most Aces at the back and to my eyes the wider rim looks right. Moreover, in modern traffic conditions I want as much grip as I can get.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / 1951 Ace 2.6
« on: October 11, 2015, 10:57:22 »
I see from the results of the July sale at Coys that a 1951 (sic) 2.6 fetched £93k. But no Aces of any kind were made as early as 1951, let alone a 2.6! And the price achieved is about half what I would expect.

Does anyone know anything about this mysterious machine?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Moss box rebuild
« on: August 11, 2015, 20:36:41 »
I am thinking of having the Moss box on my Ace 2.6 (RSX5006) rebuilt by JB Sports Engineering with an all-synchromesh conversion, as the company has done on a number of Jags and Morgans. The ratios are different (closer, which would be nice between second and third) and having a synchro first will be non-original, but I am tempted. Does anyone have experience of one of these conversions, and if so, can I have a drive please! Alternatively, suggestions about who could do the job would be appreciated. Anyone taking it on must have the engineering facilities to make new shafts and gears as necessary, not just dress the old ones and fit new bearings and seals.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / History of RSX5006
« on: September 24, 2012, 10:37:45 »
I recently acquired a photo of my car from Peter Napier, the man who sold my car to Bob Seidman, who sold it to me (in 1971). It was taken in Paris, probably during 1964. Peter now lives in Massachusetts and I recently tracked him down. To my surprise, he told me he did not buy the car from the original owner (Patrick Schwartz) but from an American serviceman in Paris, possibly stationed at NATO's then headquarters, at Porte Dauphine, or at SHAPE in Rocquencourt. However, he has forgotten the name.

David Sanderson, who rebuilt my car, tells me that an American called Vincent was active in French AC circles around that time, he owned BEX364 at one point. Even if he didn't own my car, it is very possible that he knows who did. Does anyone know of Vincent?

I also understand that a former Chardonnet employee still has some records from that time. Does anyone know who he is and how I can contact him? It is very likely that the car passed through Chardonnet's hands at some time.
