Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Bristol engine rockers
« on: December 19, 2023, 17:47:22 »
Good evening,

I have been considering retiring the original rockers of my Bristol engine and replace them with modern "upgrades" from Nuthall or Stokes. Does anyone on here have experience with either? Any pros and cons?

Thanks in anticipation.

Dear all,

The crankshaft damper on the Ace Bristol of a friend is in need of replacement or at least overhaul. Do we know people who can take care of this?
I know that Barrie posted while back about a company in Oregon a who can rebuild the damper from the AC engine, but it seems the Bristol damper has not been discussed on here yet.

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Buyer beware

The legal issues a friend of mine has been going through since he sold his Ace Bristol has put under the light the practices of some long term ACOC members, such as using the law to avoid bad publicity when the sale of a car has gone wrong. Whilst such practices are certainly not unheard of in this sad world where making ever bigger profits has become, for far too many, more important than common sense and basic morality, I am curious to see if the club will take any action (pun untintended) so that people in the know would not take advantage of their position to abuse naive and trustworthy enthusiasts who thought they were buying a troublefree car. I will not give names as I have better things to do in my life than triggering any personal affair against dishonest people who may well attempt in return to drag my name through the mud, but hearing about such misbehaviours, and to echo the explanatory letter of Barrie Bird in last month’s ACtion, I cannot help raising my hand and suggest writing a few names off the members’ list.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Fuses
« on: September 14, 2021, 15:28:14 »
Good afternoon,

Is someone fluent with the fuse box on Aces?

The handbook says there should be 2x 25 amp fuses and 2x 50 amp fuses, which "can be readily identified by referring to the wiring diagram", except the W29340A wiring diagram that I have does not mention the amperage of the fuses illustrated.

Perhaps one with basic electrical knowledge and understanding would guess just by looking at the corresponding functions, but this is sadly not my case. For some reason the 4th fuse on the diagram is not linked to any electrical component anyway, whilst it does serve a purpose on my Ace, which goes in line with the mention of 4 fuses in use according to the handbook.

The handbook also mentions 2 spare fuses, but I do not have them and ignore where they should be mounted as there does not seem to be any extra room for these two in the fuse box.

Good evening all,

Whilst this is perhaps not the best forum to ask this question I was wondering if some folks on here had experience with the Cobra replicas built by Superformance.
What are the technical, not so visible details which typically set them off from original Cobras?

The reason for asking is that I have one on the radar at the moment, a Mk2 FIA (I would not consider a Cobra without leaf springs), and even if I could afford a nice MkIV instead, the looks of the MkIV just do not do it for me - and by saying this I hope I will not get stoned by some possible Thames Ditton fundamentalists.

I searched through the forum for older posts on this topic but nothing interesting came out.

Experiences but also mere opinions and brain farts are welcome.

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

I have just had the silencer refurbished on the Ace and am now looking at various finish options.
I believe the previous owner had the complete exhaust aluminized, from the manifolds to the tip, as suggested by its white colour. However it seems that aluminizing favours heat radiation. I cannot say this is something I am interested in, which brings me now to consider ceramic coating instead, specifically to avoid heat radiation.

I am very interested to hear the opinions of the good folks on here.
Going stainless is not an option as I wish to retain the original exhaust.

Thanks.

Good evening,

Is there for an Ace Bristol a Lucas wiring diagram more recent than W31520A?

My LHD car was delivered new in July 1961 and although the wiring seems original for the most of it I am observing some slight but interesting discrepancies with what is mentioned on W31520A dated February 1957.

In particular my car is fitted with some push stalk on the dashboard, to the LHS of the steering wheel, which enables dipped headlights only when the sidelights are on. Shouldn't this stalk activate main beam instead?

Edited to add : I should have given a first look at the members' area on the website which hosts wiring diagram W29340A published in March 1957. Still no mention of some "main beam stalk" though.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Alternative to standard wire wheels?
« on: October 01, 2017, 13:21:54 »
Dear all,

Is there such a thing as a one-piece rim alternative to the regular wire wheels used on an Ace(ca)?

The reason for asking is that the condition of the roads around where I live is not really improving and my reasoning is that one-piece rims may not suffer as much and go out of round as quickly as wire wheels.

Solid wheels may certainly not look as good as original wire wheels and may give the usual Ace(ca) an odd appearance, but having to rebuild wire wheels every other year is something I am not really warming up to, not to mention the usual mechanical issues related to driving a car with wheels out of balance.

Looking forward to reading your comments. Thanks.

Hello all,

I get the feeling from looking at the 2.6 radiator that it may be about as heavy as a dead horse, and before I pull it off the engine bay to clean it thoroughly and possibly repaint it, I was curious if a known and proven lighter replacement could be purchased somewhere?
Or is this only a case of bank-breaking custom work?

   Thanks.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Carburettor synchronizer?
« on: December 06, 2016, 08:56:07 »
Hello,

What does everyone use to tune their Solex carbs on the Bristol engine?

I heard good things about the vintage Motometer unit(s) but I would rather buy something new, and most of the modern "snail"-shaped synchronizers look like they won't be a trivial fit with the Solex inlet flange.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hello,

While looking at an original Mk2 Cobra recently I noticed some light cracks on the bodywork about halfway up its door sills.

Someone I believe to be in the know mentioned this was a design weakness that would often appear "after a while" if always filling up the fuel tank to its maximum capacity.

Thankfully my Ace does not suffer from this issue but I have been wondering if other folks on here had heard about this before and accordingly avoided filling up their fuel tank to the full?

   Thanks.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Vokes air filter & filtering part
« on: June 22, 2016, 12:11:11 »
Hello,

Just curious what other chaps on here use as a replacement for the filtering part in Vokes air filter "camemberts"?
It looks like something might be available from K&N but I would rather steer clear from oiled filters, especially pink ones.

   Thanks.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ball joint supplier
« on: August 05, 2015, 10:25:33 »
Good morning chaps,

Could a member in the know point me to a source for front ball joint replacements?

   Thanks in advance.
