Fellow ACECA lovers...

Happy New Year to you all.

After much debate, I have decided to sell my ACECA and thought I would reach out to this group first in hope that one of you might be interested or know someone who would be.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Engine serial number locations
« on: November 13, 2014, 17:06:31 »
Hi gang -

Can anyone tell me where I might find the engine number(s) on a D2 Bristol?

I am having a devil of a time finding mine.

   Pictures would be HUGELY appreciated.

Also, where I might find a replacement brass tag for the valve cover?

   Cheers,
   Rob

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Valve failure
« on: September 10, 2014, 01:11:32 »
Fellow ACECA/ACE owners -

I have a D2 Bristol that sadly suffered a valve failure during the Monterey Reunion races last month.

The engine had about 6 sessions on it and over-revving was not an issue.

The engine has now been torn down to investigate the extent of the damage.

The tip of the valve snapped off at the keeper.  Very strange failure.  Anyway, I am not going to wait for the others to fail.

Can anyone recommend where I can purchase valves for a D2 race engine?

   Thanks in advance!

Hi gang -

I have been off the forum for a while and sadly off the track due to work needs.  Must pay the bills!

Anyway, I raced my ACECA for the first time in a year.  It was great to be back on the track again.  Oh how I have missed her.

   Now for the update...

The good news - the Winchester stub axles along with the fix for keeping the bolt from unscrewing worked a charm.

The bad news - Part 1
Firstly, during my first practice session, in a long left hand carousel, I heard a bit of a "bang" followed by a pronounced rubbing sound of my backing plate on my left rear drum.  Not good.  I pulled into the hot pit and got out and gave the left rear a tug. WOW! significant movement.  So, I limped back to my garage and put her up on jacks.  We pulled the spinner off and THE TOP 3/4 INCHES OF THE BOLT HOLDING THE STUB AXLE TO THE HUB FELL ONTO THE GROUND!!! Yes, that's right, a 5/8" x 1 1/2" grade 5 hardened bolt SNAPPED in the hub.
After 3 hours of hitting every hardware and automotive store in a 40 mile radius, I finally found a Grade 8 replacement for the sheared bolt. We replaced both rear bolts to be safe. Problem solved!  Or so I thought.  Well, at least that problem was solved.  However, my mechanic and I were (and still are) completely baffled by the bolt shearing.  We cannot understand how it could have happened.  Perhaps the next bit may help...

The Bad News Part II -
After running in my afternoon practice session, I noticed I was having backing plate rubbing sounds again.  I finished the session and put the car back on jacks again. This time BOTH rear wheels were now loose!  However, the bolts had not moved at all due to their retaining plates. Yet, after removing the retaining plates each bolt could be turned at least 1/2 turn before snugging up again.  No, the bolts had not stretched. The only thing we could conclude was that the wheel bearings were compressing in some way...not good either. But, at least we were able to snug them up again and get ready for the race the next day...off to the pub.

The bad news part III -

The next morning I went out for a 15 minute warm up session in advance of the afternoon race.  5 minutes in, the rubbing started again in earnest.  I finished the session and went in.  Yup, up on the stands she went.  This time the bolts were tight!  But the wheels were still very wobbly.  Game over.  I had no interest in losing a wheel in the race.  We were done...
The only thing we could surmise without a complete tear down was that the bearings were shot.  BTW, these bearings only had one session on them and were the same type I had used for the previous 3 years.
One MAJOR difference was that for this weekend, I was using AVON's instead of Dunlops.  I knocked 5 seconds off of my best laps ever with these tyres. Their grip was vastly superior.  So, the thought was that this increased grip/load was just too much for the bearings to handle.  However, I had run them once before with the stock stub axles without issue. So we are concerned that the design of the Winchester stubs may not be supporting the bearings correctly.

   Now it's over to you...!
    - What do you think happened?  Why did the bolt shear?
   - What are my options for different bearing choices?
   - Upright choices?

I look forward to a healthy discussion!

   Cheers,
   Rob

Fellow AC owners.
As some of you may know, I am the Chairman of the Hillsborough Concours located here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We are the longest continually running concours in the world and known for our very high quality field of cars while also having a bit of fun.

The esteemed Jim Feldman will be joining us this year with his magnificent Zagato bodied Ace Bristol.

I would like to see a few more of my brethren enter!

If you would like to join us on July 21st for the concours, please go to www.hillsboroughconcours.org and click on the "Exhibit" button to enter.

FYI - we also have the Tour d'Elegance on Saturday the 20th where we will get together a field of about 70 cars for a nice 40-50 mile drive that will take us to the incredible private car museum of John Mozart followed by a fantastic catered lunch.  A great day out doing what our cars are supposed to do - DRIVE.

By the way - feel free to enter a car other than an AC too!

I hope you will join us

   Cheers,

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / ACECA in the Mille Miglia
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:11:52 »
As most of you know, I currently race my car on various circuits here in sunny CA.

My dream is to ship BE603 abroad and at a minimum run the Mille Miglia.

Have any of you run an ACECA in the Mille?
Do any of you know someone who has run an ACECA in the Mille?

I would be very keen to understand the set-up of the car along with any other insights gained from running in this lovely GT car.

Under current tune, she would need quite a few changes to make her "tolerable" over a 1000 mile trip.  I have no doubt that she would make it, but any shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

   Cheers,
   Rob

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / ACECA Door Latches - PLEASE HELP!
« on: January 03, 2013, 06:12:49 »
Happy New Year to you all...

I have read a few postings in the archives about the troublesome door latches, so before you tell me that this topic has been covered elsewhere - it really hasn't.

What I have seen has been a few pictures of the star wheel, a few PDF's of the MGA FHC door mechanism that looks like the ACECA's, but I have seen NOTHING definitive about how to source repairs or replacments for faulty door latches.

As most of you know, I race my car.  Well doors that don't hold tight are a very quick way to get black flagged.  I have a RHD car with a faulty left hand catch.  It is currently being held tight by exterior taping and a tie down strap.  Not good.

My driver's side is starting to get iffy too.

Does anyone know where I can find replacements or repairs for these important parts?

Is there a valid cross reference?

No, I do not wish to modify my latch system unless it is a reasonable bolt on.

   Please advise!

   Thanks gang.

   Cheers,
   Rob
