Most Mk IV’s have their side reflectors located below the side vent louvers, but a few have them located above.  Was this due to differences in local regulations or just a quirk at the factory?   Also, many post-1987 models have a Powered by Ford label directly above the louver.  Anyone know if these were applied to the Ford-partnered cars at the factory, added by US dealers, or are simply the result of owner enthusiasm for Henry’s products?

Yes, I’m sure many of you may find it ironic that a guy who drives an archaic AC MkIV is writing to the ACOC to see if there was a way to bring its membership fee collection mechanism into the 21st century.  I must admit, I am an overseas member in bad standing.  I’ve had a dues invoice buried on my desk for over a year now simply because I am too lazy to write a check, prepare an envelope, and mail the damn thing.  Thus, this note is an attempt to clear my conscience by initiating an electronic bill pay for our dues.  Can it not be as simple as sending a Paypal payment to the club’s e-mail address?  If not, how about an ACOC eBay account?  Any other ideas that would allow me (and I’m sure, others) to pay my dues on time and in an electronically efficient manner?

General Forum / The Gauge Shop - Beware!

I ordered a “reconditioned” Smiths clock for my AC directly from Alan Davis’ website, The Gauge Shop, about this time last year.  He ended up shipping me a clock that had the tips of the hour and minute hands broken off, and a dial that was in need of a good cleaning (sprinkled w/ white paint (?) particles).  After some back and forth e-mails he agreed to send replacement hands plus instructions, but after repeated follow-ups failed to do so.  After more back-and-fourth e-mails he finally told me “Just send the whole thing back and I will sort it out”.  So I shipped it off.
   
   In the mean time I saw that he had another clock on his eBay site for auction, and I ended up winning it (What a deal!).  Unfortunately it never arrived, and he has never responded to my e-mails via eBay.  eBay ended up refunding my money.  The interesting thing is that the clock that I won on eBay for 26 GBP was, and still is advertised on Davis’ website for 75 GBP.  Clearly, he had/has this item in stock and for sale at: http://www.thegaugeshop.com/shop/article_55/SMITHS-QUARTZ-CLOCK---.html?shop_param=cid%3D15%26aid%3D55%26.  You too can buy it …maybe!
   
   I’m still waiting for Davis to return the original purportedly reconditioned clock that I had sent back to him late last year (Probably the one currently listed on his web site!).  Still no response… I would truly feel bad about posting this if the reason for his unresponsiveness was that the ol’ curmudgeon dropped dead!  But his recent eBay activity suggests otherwise.  In light of his excellent eBay ratings I am a bit surprised that he is so morally corrupt.  However, from the few negative feedback responses (and some positive ones as well) that he does have, Davis has a history of items lost in post, particularly when the sell price was low.   He may provide great service to those in the UK, but he clearly takes advantage of customers who can’t easily come knocking on his door.  That said, Nisonger is the way to go in the US, and probably elsewhere.
   
   By the way, I sent an early version of this e-mail to Alan long before posting it here in the hope that he would agree to honor his word and send me the hands and instructions, or exchange the clock for one that was up to his purported standards.  That was on 10/31/10, and, I’m still waiting for signs of life (and my clock) from Alan.
   
   As they say, ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances.  Hopefully this note will save someone out there a lot of future aggravation.
   
   On a lighter note, feel free to offer suggestions on how to handle a curmudgeonly Englishman at a distance. [:D]

   Front end hit hard.  Looks like far more than the advertised 5K miles on the car (based on pedal wear, etc.)

Can anyone provide a close-up picture of a factory-installed Smiths clock found in the 86-89 Mk IV’s?

Very nice write-up on our Mk IV registrar Alan Faulkner-Stevens and his Dragon Wheels Restorations in the August issue of Thoroughbred & Classic Cars.  I’d be knocking on his shop’s door if I were on that side of the Atlantic.  You just can’t buy that kind of advertisement.  Congratulations Alan!

Well, it’s not really a workshop manual, but it is the closest thing we’ve got to one.  I’m referring to Peter’s (aka dkp_cobra) opus 'tool time' story: how I recreate my MK 4.  There’s a storehouse of information in the 8 pages on this forum, but it is a bit difficult to find things using the sites search engine.  Obviously, not having anything better to do, I put all 8 pages together in a fully searchable, 347-page PDF file.  A few closely related threads were included as well.  Anyone who wants a copy can hit the “e-mail poster” button, and I’ll send you a copy.  Note that this file is 29,282 kb large, and some may have problems receiving it.  Alternatively, if the ADMINISTRATOR agrees, this file could be placed in the Mk IV members area and downloaded from there.

General Forum / Email Poster - Does it work?

I've tried several times to send an e-mail message to another member and have never received a reply.  I do realize that there is that small possibility that they really don't like me, but I doubt (and I hope) that is not the real explanation.  Anyway, if this feature works, please tell me how.  If it doesn’t, can the Administrator fix it?

   1987 AC COBRA MK IV
   
   --Red with Tan leather interior and Tan carpeting, 15,000 miles from new, Supercharged 302 cu. in. engine (400 HP) and 5-speed-T5 transmission.
   
   As with all AC MK IV’s the body is all aluminum built on the original AC Cobra bucks. This example is exceptional throughout with all documentation from new including original sales receipt.
   
   This Cobra MK IV was previously sold by Autosport Designs to a long time client (Previously one of my personal cars). Since purchased in February 2006, this Cobra has received the following modifications and servicing to bring to absolute concour standards throughout: Supercharger fitted (addition 100 HP), Completely refurbish Connolly leather interior and carpeting, Headrests removed, New tonneau cover, All exterior AC emblems installed, Bonnet hood scoop supplied and installed, Exterior completely wet sanded for show and New stereo unit with I-pod capability. It has been serviced when and where needed to keep in its current exceptional condition.
   
   This AC comes complete with convertible top, full tonneau, owner’s manual, knock-off hammer and original jack. This is a proper aluminum AC Cobra with a wonderful provenance and must be considered one of the best of its kind.  Oh yes and recently I received an e-mail from his wife who stated that I forgot to add.."You forgot to say, previously owned by a nut!"
