Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Wiring Diagram
« on: April 23, 2011, 22:26:21 »
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the Ace?  I searched the site including the members area but could not find one.  It's been mentioned that one exists, but my workshop manual doesn't have it.

I have headlights, turn signals, brake lights and gauge lights but no running lights.  Puzzling that the gauge lights work but not the running lights.

   Thanks

428 Frua Forum / Racing Windscreen
« on: April 30, 2010, 14:08:11 »
Thought I might check the Cobra/428 forum.
I have an Ace (BEX375) and looking for a racing windsceen.  It may have been used on Cobras also.  My Ace had one when raced in the early 60's.  The holes and mounting bracket are still in the cowl, but I can't find the screen.  It was taken off when the windshield was reinstalled and car was put back to road use.

There are three studs in the mounting bracket.  They are not equally spaced.  The first to the middle is about 8.0" and the middle to the third is 7.5".

Any ideas where to get the screen?  Any people making replicas of late 50's speed parts?
   Thanks

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Solex Carbs
« on: January 10, 2010, 16:07:22 »
I noticed on the Aceca Bristol BE603 that there are no accelerator pumps on the Solex carbs.  Instead there are just blanking plates where the pumps would normally be situated.  I noticed this on a few other Bristol engines.

Does anyone have comments on this set-up?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Dash Plaques and Racing History BEX375
« on: January 02, 2010, 19:52:41 »
Shown are some typical East Coast SCCA dash plaques for BEX375.  The picture is at the Mt Washington Hill Climb.  Unfortunately the dash plaque is missing but I do have 2nd place trophy

The Mt Washington hill climb is a bit different from the British speed hill climb.  The course is 7.6 miles, starts at an elevation of 1600' and ends at 6288'.  It has had some paving but at the time was mostly gravel.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Oil Viscosity
« on: February 06, 2009, 02:35:43 »
The members response to the spin-on filter and lubricant threads spurred a comparison of oils.  The original 30wt is still good since most of these cars never start and operate at low temperatures.  Oil viscosity rises exponentially as temperature goes down.

      Viscosity in SSU

         Temperature
      50F   104F   140F   212F
   10W-30   793   328   182   56
   30W   1307   471   238   61
   10W-40   1367   521   274   76
   15W-40   1410   540   284   79
   20W-50   2369   810   396   95

If a multi viscosity oil is preferred, the 10W-40 has the advantage of good flow characteristics at low temperature with better viscosity at operating (140F) and high temperature.

The 15W-40 is also good because it is still available in API SJ formulation with the ZDDP high pressure additive.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Bristol Spin-on Filter
« on: January 22, 2009, 00:53:27 »
Is anyone running a spin-on oil filter with the associated adapter on a Bristol engine?  I believe the adapter changes the oil flow through the filter.  The Volks flows from inside to out where the spin-on flows from outside to inside.  It seems like a lot of porting and potential for flow restriction.  Is there any difference in oil pressure?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Modern oil in old motors
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:21:37 »
Some recent articles suggest that modern oils won't properly lubricate older engines.  An extreme pressure additive, zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP), has been removed to protect the catalytic converter on newer cars.  This causes flat tappets to spall and cam wear.  Recommended fix is an oil additve package or diesel rated oil.

I'm thinking of Shell Rotella 30 wt.  Anyone have experience with this issue in a Bristol engine?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Vintage Pictures
« on: December 18, 2008, 13:01:52 »
A friend directed me to the web site www.coldplugs.com  It has a picture of my father with the Ace staging for the Mount Washington hillclimb in 1962.

   http://www.coldplugs.com/images/sheloth2.jpg

For members not in the Northeast USA, Mount Washington is about 6000 ft elevation and at least part of the road is gravel.  The Ace took second that day.

The rest of the web site has many period pictures at the two local tracks, Lime Rock and Thompson.

Any Ace owners going to the Vintage Festival? Starts tomorrow.  Too late to organize anything, but maybe we could meet up.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Tire Pressures
« on: April 12, 2008, 03:29:49 »
Wondering what other Ace owners are running for tire pressures?  The manual calls for 22 front and 24 rear.

I have Michelin Racing Radials 5.50 x 16.  With 22 front and 24 rear, the tires seem uninflated.  There is lots of rolling resistance and the side walls get warm, but the handling is OK.  Pressures of 28-30 front and 30-32 rear seem to work better.

Are current radials that much different from the vintage Michelin X?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Ace Boot Panels
« on: March 07, 2008, 15:09:48 »
While apart for repair work, I took the opportunity to make drawings of the interior boot panels.  I have six preliminary drawings, the left and right sides, floor, bulk head, top and access panels.  If someone needs these for a restoration, I can finish the drawings and send them.  Otherwise, I will put them aside and complete them later.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Suspension Mount Cracks
« on: January 16, 2008, 00:43:26 »
In the process of repairing the lateral tube above the differential, another issue was encountered.

The rear lower control arm mounting points also have cracks.  These are difficult to see as they are cracked at the top in a weld.  Only the rear mounts have cracks and not the front ones.

I would like to insert a picture, but can't seem to get the "insert image button" to work.

I don't know if this is unique to my car but, a check of the rear suspension mounts couldn't hurt.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Body and Chassis Flex
« on: November 17, 2007, 13:19:32 »
I've heard of the Ace body cracking around the doors, but never heard the root cause or the accepted fix.  I've also heard that occasionally chassis welds in the rear structure can fail.

I noticed a lot of movement in the door openings.  I did a thorough inspection of the frame, outriggers, differential structure and surrounding tubes.  I didn't find anything.

It seems the chassis design has the most flexibility just in front of the rear bulkhead.  In this area, there are no bracing tubes, only the main chassis tubes.  This flexing may be a characteristic of the design.

The Ace has only 24,000 miles and always stored indoors in a dry heated garage.  It hasn't been in the rain in 25 years, so there is no corrosion or degradation of the chassis structure.

Is this normal?  Am I too accustomed to moderns?  Is it me or the Ace?
