General Forum / Selling my 428
« on: September 02, 2018, 11:45:22 »
I'm putting CF25 up for sale.

In my ownership I've had the engine rebuilt, braking system and suspension overhauled, new hood. The interior is good - character not knackered. Body/paintwork could be improved.

Hard to put a price on it so I'll start at o.i.r.o £150,000

It'll be listed on various online sites - Goodwood Revival is just down the road from me so timing might be right...

428 Frua Forum / How many 428's?
« on: February 10, 2016, 09:08:23 »
Paul, it would be interesting to know some stats regarding how many 428's are still in existence. Your register has some known and others unknown. The Club membership list records some but not all.
Presumably Andy holds further club records which might add to the list?
Be nice to have an overall total for rh/lh drive convertibles/coupes.

Currently listed - an AC Cars Ltd March 1972 Price List - £7009 purchase price to include 'Fresh Air System' as standard equipment...

Also just sold two photos of a nubile young lady wearing some sort of leopard skin bikini standing in front of a white 428 - thought to be Earl's Court Motor Show c.1970. Maybe the buyer will share them on this forum?

Following the 428 article in Octane check out the book mentioned;
Clear The Fast Lane by Douglas Rutherford features an ex-racing driver and his 428.
The 1971 hardback has a 428 on the cover. The 1974 reprint has a Cobra.
Amazon has a few copies for sale.

428 Frua Forum / AC badge
« on: November 17, 2014, 10:52:07 »
My engine and gear box are still away for rebuild so I took the opportunity to fit new grilles (as available from the Club or Rimmer Bros - as they are the same as the Triumph Herald). What a pain! To get to the grilles the radiator has to come out and the bumpers come off (therefore including inner arches to the front wings and the bumper bars themselves. Wierdly you place the grille before the bumper bar mounts then you have to tighten the bumper mounts from the inside with the grilles right in the way - it's fiddly and I found that two nuts (one out of the three on each side) had been left off due to the inaccessibility.
This poking around lead me on to the front badge. I've always worried that it was slightly loose so decided to investigate. The badge is held in place with the usual AC tiny nuts and little tabs of metal. Once off it's clear that the badge is made up from three parts - the AC symbol, the red painted backing plaque (with a small soldered-on pin to the base) and the chromed surround.
I have noted several cars to be lacking this badge with the aperture sealed up. My question is this:
Would anyone be interested in replacement badges?
Whilst it's off the car I'm happy to use it as the model from which copies can be made. I've made some enquiries of local foundries etc and await their reply. Obviously cost will be an issue - I did consider 3D printing but suspect that it will not work for the surround.

428 Frua Forum / Engine rebuild
« on: June 20, 2014, 10:53:45 »
My C6 gearbox failed on the way to Goodwood two weeks ago. The cast iron manifolds remain cracked and the engine is full of sludge.

Given the lengthy process of extracting the gearbox it makes sense to go for an engine rebuild, rebuild the gearbox and sort the manifolds.

I've been recommended to Peter Knight who is clearly among the best but perhaps too specialist for my needs (I'm looking for a straight rebuild rather than huge performance upgrades).

Also been given the name of Adrian Caroll of AC Motors in the West Midlands.

   Any advice/recommendation would be welcome.

It's time for a rebuild. I'm not looking for huge upgrades just a good reliable build for typical street use.

428 Frua Forum / Neo model 428
« on: August 07, 2013, 19:01:55 »
For those seeking a model 428 and unable to source a rare Micansue example Neo models have released a 1/43 scale fastback (burgundy and blue colours seen) in what may be a limited edition of 300 at the fairly reasonable price of £50 or thereabouts.

Available to buy through ebay also at Grandprix models who are showing a convertible due for release soon (in Emanuel green!)

428 Frua Forum / Exhaust manifold
« on: June 19, 2013, 17:11:29 »
One of the manifolds has cracked on the Frua and needs cast iron welding. Can anyone recommend someone in the south east who can do it?

The boys at Thunder Road no longer have a contact as their previous welder has now retired. They tell me that the original is an American Ford part but do not know which model it comes from. Attempts to fabricate tubular manifolds have been tricky due to the lack of space available.

   Any thoughts on this?

428 Frua Forum / 428 Insurance
« on: May 14, 2012, 14:42:34 »
My 428 insurance is due for renewal and Flux are unwilling to consider an agreed value for a convertible in excess of £60K which seems rather mean.

Any recommendations out there or do I leave it to argue 'open market value' if a claim becomes necessary?
