In amongst my concours Shelby restoration work i have restored two MkIV Lightweights. This has allowed me to manufacture my own moulds to produce the front fibreglass inner wings for both LHD and RHD versions, should anybody need some. I can also add greater clearance around the steering column shaft on the LHD cars if required. This i found much needed on a cars conversion to an early style steering column i completed.

CRS Cobra chassis number #22 is currently for sale on the Pistonheads Classified web-site. Mark-Anthonys properly tweaked car with fully documented EFI motor upgrade and big fuel tank conversion.
Very low mileage car for a very reasonable price.

General Forum / Silverstone Classic event
« on: April 28, 2010, 20:36:34 »
Just a short message to let people know about the booking charges levied by the organising company of the Silverstone Classic event later this year. Tried to book my tickets, via phone, for the event at the advertised price of £80 only to be told the total was another £8.40 on top, their fees! Felt this was a little steep. But was told they could charge what they wanted..make your own mind up about that one

For the later produced AC vehicles, owners like myself have their cars powered by the superb 302ci Ford V8 engine. This came in either a carburetted form or with Electronic Fuel Injection [EFI]
The carb version is most desired by the enthusiasts as it offers 60's looks and ease of tuning and upgrading. However, carb engines especially when tuned can be very poor at passing English MOT standard emission tests. As the car gets younger, manufacturing date wise, the more stringent the emission tests. The emission limits are especially tight with post 1991 vehicles, where catalytic convertors are required to be fitted within the exhaust system. This is the case on my own vehicle where I cannot convert to a carb engine and be truely road legal.
The best solution is EFI. A properly designed/tuned and developed EFI engine will provide just as much horsepower and torque as its carb equivalent, but offers better driveability/fuel consumption and very importantly low emission levels. However to appeal to to many owners an EFI engine needs to look visually like its sixties forebears. With these parameters in mind, I put together a basic set of suitable components and along with my ideas went to see my good friend and V8 expert Peter Knight. [Knight Racing Servies 01327-871177] I asked Pete if he could develop my ideas into a specific Cobra orientated working engine, which would make excellent power, look great and above all be clean.
With his expertise, the first of these new engines has just been run on his in-house dynamometer, with it going to be installed to a Lightweight. I believe the results are fantastic and worthy of installation in any AC and I have ordered one for my own CRS.
   On testing, the engine developed 386bhp @ 5600rpm and 388 lbs/ft of torque @ 4700rpm. There was 361 lbs/ft of torque avaialble from 3000rpm.
   The basic engine build specification is as follows;
302ci Roller cam block, blue print assembled and fitted with a stroker kit to increase capacity to 331ci.
Fully balanced internals with Wiseco forged pistons
Ford Motorsport aluminium cylinder heads with special camshaft and roller rockers.
TWM throttle bodies on special intake manifold assembly.
EFI Technologies ECU with Bevan Technologies wiring harness.
What makes this engine stand out from all other EFI motors is the TWM Induction set-up. This uses throttle bodies which look like 60's period down-draught Weber carbs. Also with the sofisticated ECU the engine is easliy tunable via a lap-top for both power and emissions.
If any AC owners has interest in the above spec. engine thay can call Peter direct and he will be happy to discuss the finer details with them.
Finally, thank you again to Bruce Classen for kindly uploading pictures of the engine plus a copy of the power dyno sheet.

Just over a year ago I was offered the chance to purchase the only Factory produced hard-top for the CRS range of Cobras. The hard-top was manufactured for, and fitted to, CRS chassis #20. The original long term owner of the vehicle has just sold the car and the new owner preferred open motoring and offered me the chance to buy the top.
This hard-top is unusual in its shape, being of "fast-back" design, rather than the normal round-back. The shape was designed to follow the lines of the early AC race cars, however, the original owner who commissioned the top loved the fast-back sides but wanted a vertical back window. Because of this the top follows the design cues from vehicles such as the 246 Dino and XJS Jaguar. A true fast-back style hard-top would have had a sloping rear window and would have needed one of the short bottom hinged boot lids. As the CRS Cobras used a moulded Carbon-Fibre construction based upon a Lightweight MkIV bodyshell, I had assumed, wrongly, there would be good uniformity between each CRS body shape.
Circumstances deemed that once the hard-top was removed from Chassis #20 it was offered onto Chassis #06, to check the fit against the windscreen and rear body work. Once in position it was quite obvious by the mis-match between the hard-tops' lower shape and the cars' rear bodywork curvature, that some extensive reworking was required. The top was also offered onto Chassis #10 and again the bodyshape mis-match was evident, although on all three cars the windscreen was in the same position.
Fixing of the original top onto the car used bolts through the inner mounting flanges on the the top, just behind the doors, through the hood stick ferrules. However the original front windscreen attachments were small U shaped brackets with Velcro strips, which suprised me somewhat.
Due to obvious car to car manufacturing differences, it was quite clear some extensive reworking of my new purchase was required. The reality was my top would have to be used as the pattern for some serious reworking. I made a call to long time fibre-glass expert Pete Goodman [01327-843585] asking him if he would get involved with me in the hard-tops extensive redesigning and upgrade. He agreed, and for the last year Pete has been back and forward from his workshop, which is near Weedon on the A5 in Northants to my home in Milton Keynes as we worked through redeveloping/redesigning and enhancing the top until we had reached the current finished item. These new tops still use the rear fixing postions, but, at the front, small ears have been added. These ears are extensively reinforced with Kevlar and sit down over the sides of the windscreen and use original style over-centre catches, as used on the soft-tops to lock the hard-top down onto the screen frame. No more Velcro!!!
Pete's diligent work has provided a beautifully manufactured item, which fits superbly, will clear Factory installed roll-bars, is light, and a joy to look at.
Because of this work Pete is now able to offer other AC Cobra owners one of these Hard-tops should they want one. The top would be matched to the owners vehicle for a precise fit and the cost for a bare fibre-glass top including a rear screen/seal kit/weatherseals and catches would be £1250 + VAT and are directly available from Pete.
I have hopefully attached some pictures [with the help of Bruce Classen, thanks for that] of my top fitted to my CRS.
If anybody would like to see the top or discuss it, please feel free to call me

General Forum / AC Iconic Cobra
« on: March 14, 2010, 17:54:12 »
There is much talk about the MkIV on the forum, with the latest show version being heavily improved bodily and build quality wise from the first one the press tried. Sorry, it does not have any blood-line to a proper English built car, but there you go..
   Anyway, check out www.iconicmotors.com
This latest version carrying the AC badge is interesting, to say the least

General Forum / AC MkV For Sale
« on: February 20, 2010, 19:09:16 »
For any Club members who may be interested, there is a red MkV for sale on the Pistonheads web-site. It is being offered at £53K.
It makes the recently sold CRS, which achieved the low £40K'S seem very cheap. Especially as in my opinion the CRS is a better built vehicle.

My stock specification 2000 built CRS runs a 1994 Mustang 5.0 litre motor and full engine management system. I recently had a problem with the cars ECU [powertrain control module in Ford speak]. The Spark Out [SPOUT] side of the ECU failed, it was getting a signal in but would not return one. I was able to get a replacement ECU easily from the States and now fitted all appears well again.
Would any AC member know where I could send my original Ford ECU to have it repaired, just so I have a good spare unit.
Any help would be much appreciated

I have received a request via, Mr. Stainer, from a lady about to get married to her servicing officer partner in Stroud on 4th Sept. As a suprise for him she is trying to find a Cobra owner to drive him to the Church in the morning. This is only a 5 minute run but he is a great Cobra fan and it will be a big suprise and a little bonus for the day. Any help would be much appreciated

General Forum / Electronic version of MkIV Cobra Registry
« on: June 30, 2009, 07:41:09 »
I am currently working on the new version of the on-line register of the MkIV Cobras. This latest version is concentrating on the actual specification of each individual car, both originally and as it is at present, if it's known. It is coming towards completion, however there are many cars the Club does not have information about. Please, if you have a MkIV and would like the most current view/spec of your car to be published please contact me, especially with good photographs. The listing does not mention owners or where the car is located just as much information about the car as I can give.
I look forward to hearing from you, best wishes

General Forum / Visit to Club stand at Silverstone
« on: June 30, 2009, 07:29:35 »
To hopefully encourage club members to visit the AC club stand with their cars, over the weekend of the Silverstone Classic event I have asked my good friend and ex-Cobra team driver Jack Sears if he would visit us. Despite a very busy schedule he has agreed. If any member has not met Jack I suggest you take this opertunity, not only is he a true gentleman and very charming but has driven more famous Cobras than you can shake a stick at. Despite being 78 years young his recall of races/events back in the 60's is amazing.
As soon as I know exactly which day and a probable time I will add this to the post
   best wishes

Does any Club member have an original Autokraft marked tachometer, from a MkIV Cobra, they are prepared to sell? I believe these are actually Stewart Warner units made specifically for Autokraft.
Any information/help would be much appreciated
   Thanks Alan Faulkner-Stevens

If any Club member is looking for a Cobra, there is a CRS currently for sale on the Autotrader.co.uk web-site. It is an early car, chassis number 6 and looks quite standard in specification. A nice metallic blue exterior colour and seems to be a sensible asking price at £45000. It will be a 302ci Ford V8 power, probably from a batch made in 1994 which most of the early cars seem to have.
Fabulous drive, if it is as much fun as my own car, which is number 10.

I have just received an e-mail from a lady in Wareham Dorset, whose husband is about to celebrate his 60th birthday. As it is a big-one she has put in a request to the Club asking if any Cobra owner would give her husband a ride in his or her vehicle to celebrate the big day. Could anybody please help with this? come on guys we must be able to do something.
Would any Club member who would be prepared to help please contact me on faulknerstevens@btinternet.com and I can forward the message to the lady in question.
   Thank you
