Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Register Updating, calling all owners
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:19:22 »
All,

I have now pieced together both "Ace Brooklands" and "New Shape Ace Brooklands" history, also got many updates from people. I have worked all updates into the register. I plan to send latest publication to action soon, so if you have bought, changed or improved your Ace Brooklands please let me know asap. One element I will cover in the article is the difference between cars. My research has shown Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 is not correct. We have two variants of Ace Brooklands:

   1. Ace Brooklands - Hand built at Brooklands, this has the round headlights on the front and all aluminum body work.

   2. New Shape Ace Brooklands - The chassis, body, doors, bonnet and boot all made in South Africa by HiTech. The cars were painted in South Africa and shipped to Brooklands for final construction.

All Ace Brooklands (including new shape) got finished at Brooklands, some later cars did not get completed and various people purchased for final completion.

I will explain more in the article.

   Thanks

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Reference E-Bay Ace
« on: October 20, 2014, 19:22:09 »
All,

The car that is on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-AC-ACE-BROOKLANDS-V8-CONVERTIBLE-/281466846229?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4188bb3c15) is actually DE1028, this is one of the early cars. The car had a crash into a tree, but now is restored with a later bonnet. Seems all major work is done, speaking with the company who did it said a lot was spent on the work. If you purchase, please let me know so I can update my records. Also a number of cars have changed hands recently and I'm keen to update my records. So please contact if you have purchased anything recently.

   Thanks

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Ac Ace Brooklands for Sale
« on: July 22, 2014, 18:04:26 »
See, http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C521792. I have seen this car, very nice example.

Interesting, interest rates so low people moving funds into cars. I hope this one goes to a good home as I have more requests than known cars. This is one of the only ones on the market.

I have been restoring a fire damaged Ac Ace Brooklands. 2 years ago I had sold all my Ac's but now I have 3 Ac Brooklands (2 Aceca's and 1 Ace) I'm restoring all three and learning a lot about the car. The chassis is just unbelievable and a small number of key jobs makes the car so much better. Also I have found a company who will make a custom loom to resolve some of the wiring issues.

I will get the latest register out, but please tell me about your cars.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Big Year
« on: March 31, 2014, 23:33:57 »
So, in July we have a big year for the Ace Brooklands, can you guess? Well it is 20 years since the first production one rolled off the production line. I did not know until now that the Ace and Ace Brooklands shared the same year. Need to have a think about something. Ideas welcome!

The car had a prototype in 1993, but the first in the register for customer was 1994. Interesting, I plan to copy the register for Action.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Ac Aceca - DE1101 Restoration
« on: December 26, 2013, 18:48:30 »
Restoring No.2 Aceca Brooklands. This car was the first of two prototypes (first being DE1100 which Steve Gray owns). Piers Martin purchased the car as a rolling chassis (no engine and transmission). This specific car was used at 1999 and 2000 British Motor Show, AC used as a Buck for future cars, when Piers obtained he had it road registered in 2007 once AC confirmed it was all new parts.

When registering a car, you need all new parts (one major part can be reconditioned) which in the case of the Aceca was the Engine, the rest was new.

Next owner of the car was George Turner who passed away last year. I purchased the car from George as I have always liked the Aceca Brooklands. When I purchased the car original purpose was tidy up and then just drive. But as normal I thought what else can be done?

Looking over the car, I found lots and lots of unfinished jobs. Every car I have restored or built has to be correct, I'm a bit of detailed type of guy. So full restore was required.

So this post will keep track of the car and all modifications I'm doing.

You can see the write up on H&H website - http://www.classic-auctions.com/Auctions/09-06-2010-ThePavilionGardens-1263/1999ACAceca-31476.aspx

First decision road car or track car. I have a few road cars, I wonder what is possible we a Brooklands. So lets set a challenge, get back fully restored for the Ac Owners Sprint 2014. Sounds easy, but I expect it to be challenge. First job list, this is big. But I like job lists

   1. Engine, current 302 and engine bay is rubbish. So out comes engine and full strip of the engine bay

   2. ABS, the original ABS system on an Ace or Aceca is not great. The weight of the car and the ABS system does not work well in my view. So out comes ABS, just run with remote Servo

   3. Suspension, a typical problem is "coil bound". The Aceca is no different, so we will sort this out with a special system.

   4. Brakes are not bad, but not good for track. So will replace with uprated

   5. Suspension Arms, this needs attention. My car has the later specification, but will need uprating. The bottom wishbone is taking a lot and is long. So will uprate

   6. Interior, my car is suffering a leak, so carpet is not good. Well outcomes the interior

   7. Wheels, not original also not correct offset, will get this sorted.

   8. Chassis is in great condition, actually no rust. I will just clean and tidy.

   9. Wiring loom is rubbish, basically needs a new one. I found a minor fire had started behind the dash. So new loom is required.

etc. Long but nothing major, except full respray.

As you can see the car needs complete stripping and cleaning. I will strip the car down over Xmas and new year ready for parts to be fitted. The engine choice is simple, my favorite engine 427W (351 Windsor Stroker) normally get around 530BHP+ from this engine.

Some pictures of the car before restoration.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Ac Ace and Aceca Brooklands
« on: December 25, 2013, 11:50:39 »
Within the register, we have two types of Brooklands

   1. The early type (first 60 chassis's), this is very easy to spot due to the headlights and bonnet being full aluminum. Within the first 60, we have the following

   Pre-Chassis (DE1019) where all prototypes (Mk1)

   Post-Chassis (DE1020-DE1060) Mk2)

   2. Late Mk3 (commonly called South African Ace's). This again is easy to see with the headlight change to square and GRP bonnet. Small number of cars, including one converted to an Aceca Prototype

   Sourced from Ac Heritage Website

   3. Next the Aceca's as there are only four cars (one which a chassis) easier to show all of them

   a. Prototype (Many Thanks to Rick Muck). Notice Mk3 Front end, it basically was stretched.

Rear was correct, straight off buck.

   Side Shot

   b. Aceca Prototype, first full chassis and was with new front end. This car looks very different to the first one. The car is currently owned by John Abel (me)

   c. Aceca Prototype, next one is currently owned by Steve Grey. Is for sale. Note, you can see all the pictures on Ac Heritage Website

   d. So the last one, well chassis. No.4. I have scanned the following pictures in from Photo's. You can see the car has No. 4 in a cycle. Used for testing components, was going to be first production car. I have all the panels to complete. All chassis parts as well, so you never know.

So there are all the variants on Ace / Aceca's. There was a hardtop available (I have the buck), some changes occurred to Hood, etc. during production. Windows changed between prototype and production Ace.

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Ac Ace and Aceca Brookland Pictures
« on: December 25, 2013, 11:10:37 »
As promised, started work on the Ace / Aceca Brooklands register update. While kids are playing with new toys got a few minutes to upload some unique pictures. Many Thanks to Rick Muck for sharing.

Also will be posting the re-build of the Aceca Brooklands. Doing a full restore, was going to do a light restore. But then found to many jobs that needed doing, this will allow me to get part list for others together. Anyway, see below. Have a great Xmas!

Late Ace Picture, I have all the late Mark 3 Ace's that got built now in the register

Aceca Brooklands being built (this is my car) only two built and final in chassis form (I have the green and last Aceca). The last Aceca will be built in a few years time.

Last picture of the engine fitted, note same as Mustang engine. Basically most parts are ford mustang. This means a good source of parts

The one which went to auction recently was a prototype which had the front of a Mk3 Ace and the rear from the bucket (which I have in storage). The car was basically an Ace with a stretch. The final three are all correct Aceca Chassis's so one of the rarest Ac's

   Rear of Ace, late variant

   Suspension

Ace 'Brooklands' Forum / Brooklands Register
« on: October 17, 2013, 22:25:24 »
All,

During the year people have been sending me updates, I have two weeks off over Xmas allowing me to complete the register so we can print in the Action after Xmas. Can you please suppply information on your car.

I have decided to document the restore of my Ac Aceca Brooklands and also will document all the changes I'm doing for other owners (will be same as Ace). Remember we have a small number of cars and what has occurred with AC values. I have driven Cobra's, Ace, Aceca, etc. and the handling of the Brooklands is in my view the best.

I plan to complete the last chassis Aceca (No.4 again will document the car) to race standard. So now Bruce has taken over the sprint, I will focus effort on getting the Brooklands more visibility.

All,

Just to let you know I have been doing quite a bit of research and have new information on Ac Ace Brooklands and the three Aceca Brooklands. I want to send an article soon to Action. But if you can send me updates on ownership, etc. that would be great. I will publish the latest register. Also if you own a South Africa Ace let me know I have some of the factory records for the car as well.

General Forum / Latest Update for Goodwood Sprint
« on: October 31, 2012, 20:09:59 »
All,

We are nearly there, this is the last year I will be doing the sprint and same for John Spencer. So please come down and support your club, if you have not been before it is brilliant. We hope good weather will be occurring on the day. Also if you are interested in knowing more about the sprint and want to discuss either role of Paddock Marshall or Secretary of meeting just come and see me or John. We will be running around but always good for a chat.

   So latest stats

   1. We have 15 AC entered, which is just brilliant. Need to check but largest entry for me. Also 1 AC engined Car, more Cobra's

   2. We have 61 Entries, down on normal full field. But not bad, so still time to enter. Normally get 3-4 this week still.

   Thanks and see you Saturday.

General Forum / AC Owners Spint 2012
« on: September 18, 2012, 23:07:36 »
All AC Owners,

Well this is my fifth sprint and the entries are starting to roll in fast. We have 20 people booked, would like more AC's. Also would like to see more AC engine cars on the grid. We had an Aceca last year with an AC engine, I'm the same as Clive who ran the sprint for so many years the AC engine is "special".

Also if you are interested in running the sprint and meeting some really interesting people. Over the years I have really enjoyed talking to owners and making lots of new friends. The ACOC sprint is run with passion from all of the people who help me (or should I say cover up my mistakes), but we do need a Sec of the Meet to run the event. My work means I can not spend the time setting the event up, if someone will take over I will help / assist and make sure they have everything they need going forward.

So if you are interested in shadowing me this year and just experience the day, please reach out. My details are in ACTION, the build up to the day is fun and the day it self is just brilliant. The event just gets better and better each year, last year I had to inform the police about the amount of people just watching. We should be very proud as a club as one of the last events of the year is still run in the same way it was done many years before I took over which is have more fun off the track and then go and get more fun on the track. I still have special memories chasing people to get out on the grid who just get caught up in talking.

So if you have not done sprinting before just phone me and I will walk you through what is involved. A very good friend of mine said "Sprinting is great you go out and beat yourself, just have fun slower or faster it does not matter".

So my first call, please enter sooner than later, we had over 120+ entries last year for 72 slots. I feel based on the first two weeks we will have another full grid.

   Speak Soon, John.

Ps, if someone does take over I promise to enter an AC into the event.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Reference AEX561
« on: May 01, 2012, 00:16:32 »
About 18 months ago I started (well not me, but my friend Fintan (@ F H Ellis) started to restore the Ac Aceca that most people know about AEX561 (see http://www.acownersclub.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1338&SearchTerms=AEX561). Well good news and some more good news.

The car was striped down to chassis and body, normal rust in out riggers and some small tubes. The biggest challenge was the hole (well massive) hole in the main chassis rail. Well we have found that the rust went back and forward so less than 3 feet needs to be replace. The best bit the body is not in a bad condition, which is great news. Trust me restoring a body is a massive cost compared to chassis work.

I will take some photo's when I'm next up at the workshop so you can see progress.

The engine is next, the car had an incorrect engine. I have decided to put a CL engine into the car. I have acquired an engine and gearbox (nice the engine is 3 off the original engine). The other decision is to make the car into a race / hill climbing car. So again I will provide some information on this thread during the process. Last bit as this is my third Ac restore I will also share some tips for people specially on suppliers and people I use. Anyway, just thought I would kick off the progress. Keep tuned for later.

   Some of my first tips:

   1. Never set a budget, I always take more time and spread cost over a period

   2. Never cut corners, people who have seen some of my previous restores know I will not accept cutting corners. So again, just take more time.

   3. Consider up front what result you want and do not change after the decision (been there and collected the t-shirt). What I mean is if for Track, then consider what a track style car needs. If for concours then consider again the outcome.

   Anyway, first three little tips.
