Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / At auction
« on: January 19, 2024, 21:34:28 »
I see there is an AC Ace PVT for sale at Mathewsons Classic car auction. (Of bangers and cash tv fame).

https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/auction/lot/lot-39---1937-acace-coupe/?lot=22201&so=0&st=&sto=0&au=61&ef=&et=&ic=False&sd=0&pp=96&pn=1&g=1

Looks like it would be a straight forward project, worth doing. Depending on if the bits are all with it.

I have decided to put the cover on and call time for this season with the car. I have put it on blocks, so as not to risk the chance of getting flats on the tyres. Although there may be a good few days left to go for a run around, I am getting lazy in my old age and fear the thought of loads of cleaning just for the sake of an hour or two getting cold and possibly wet. My Chevette is  a little easier to clean, has a heater, lights if needed and reasonable wash / wipe facilities. I will make the most of the reasonable days left, using that.
For those of you that have a better climate than us in the north of England, I hope you make the most of it and carry on enjoying your cars.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Covid-19
« on: October 13, 2021, 21:22:55 »
Hello Folks,
I currently have a list of jobs to do on the 16/66 but have been thwarted by the dreaded covid. I only have symptoms of a very mild cold but when an LFT was positive I decided to go for the PCR and it was also positive. The drive through test here in Leeds was excellent. Test at 4.00pm Saturday and results at 10.00am Sunday.
Its not the isolation that I dislike its the fact that while in the garage I don’t  have the bits to carry on doing something and I can’t go to get them. The only thing I can do is get it on the ramp ready and do some tinkering.
Stay safe everybody and look after yourselfs

I had an invite to a small classic car show in Knarsborough last Sunday. It has been running for three or four years now (barring last year due to Covid). It is held in the parkland adjacent to St. John’s church and is  a fund raiser for the choir. The organisers are loosely termed as the Leeds Legal classic car enthusiasts, with a lot of members coming from one firm in particular with friends and relations. Roughly fourty to fifty cars turn up of various types. It’s a lovely little gathering with friendly people and a genuine interest in cars.
You may be pleased to know that the AC received the joint unofficial award for best in show along with a Bugatti type 57.
It is just good to be out and about again enjoying car gatherings. I am looking forward to going to Newby Hall in Ripon  next Sunday the 18th.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Drive it Day.
« on: April 25, 2021, 22:34:54 »
I managed a run out both yesterday and today in my 16/66. About 40 miles each day in different directions. Enjoyed the runs as part of the running in process and getting some miles on before another oil and filter change.
It was mid to late afternoon for both runs so I didn’t see many other classics, just the odd one but all were nice enough to give a wave. I Hope other members had a good Drive It Day

General Forum / Pleasing Day.

I took my almost completed project car (AC 16/66) to my classic friendly MOT centre today and doubled up on pleasant surprises. I was Not wanting an MOT but wanted to have a general check over for safety sake and the brakes tested.
The first surprise was how good the brakes were and their ability  to lock up all the wheels and how well balanced they were. I know self praise is no praise but for a first time dabble with cable brakes I was quite pleased with myself.
The second surprise was that the tester didn’t charge and said it was a pleasure to see the car and show the apprentice around an old car. He also admitted it was the oldest car he had ever worked on and had never seen cable brakes himself.
It possibly helped that I took my Austin Champ in for MOT yesterday which passed and I have booked in my Honda S2000 tomorrow. Let’s hope I get a hatrick and that passes as well.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Cold running advice
« on: July 11, 2020, 23:01:51 »
Hello Folks,
I am seeking advice on warming up the engine to running temperature.
I have recently had my engine rebuilt and rebuilt the carburettors. I decided to fit a later distributor that I had refurbished by the Distributor Doctor. The reason was to try and eliminate the need for the advance/retard operation.
I am currently having difficulty in getting the car to idle until it has warmed up. If I keep the throttle depressed and the revs on then it will warm up nicely. However no matter what I do with the choke I can’t get the engine to keep running unless  I use the throttle. The hand throttle is not connected at present.
The obvious questions are, do I need to connect the hand throttle and is that why the cars originally have one.
Is the car in need of a hand advance/retard to aid cold running.
Is the timing best advanced or retarded for slow running.
The car start with ease and runs really well when it reaches running temperature.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / PVT Air Filters
« on: June 17, 2020, 22:41:10 »
Can anyone advise on a suitable Air filter available to fit to the carbs on a 16/66. They are SU HV2’s.I don’t think they had anything fitted originally but having had a complete engine rebuild it may be a good idea to fit something!
I have asked Burlen but they drew a blank and advised asking hear.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Wiring Diagrams
« on: March 27, 2020, 23:44:47 »
Hello Gents,

Does anyone have a clear and legible wiring diagram of a Lucas CJR3 regulator and fuse box.
The copies available on the net are frankly shit and are indecipherable.
I am currently doing a complete rewire on my 16/66 and help in any form will be appropriated.

Thank you in advance,

Colin

Hello PVTers. I am about to rewire my 16/66 and was wondering if any advise could be passed on if members have tackled this before.
My cars Regulator has been updated from an FJR 50 to a CJR 3. If any relevant information is known of regarding such a change can be passed on then it may help me see through the fog a little easier.
Thank you in advance for any information forwarded.

General Discussion / Drive it Day
« on: February 13, 2020, 21:57:22 »
Hello Enthusiasts,
I will be in Warwickshire on Drive it Day, the 26th of April this year. Does anyone know of events or listing of events in the area to attend. An excuse to escape the family for the day seems an attractive idea.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Colour change
« on: November 25, 2019, 21:32:27 »
As part of the rebuild of my 16/66 the colour has changed from black to dark grey. Actually it’s called Brownish Dark Grey.
The DVLA need to be informed and I wounded if any of the forum users have any tips or relevant information to ensure a smooth process.

Thanks in anticipation,

Colin

General Forum / Another AC
« on: May 02, 2019, 20:56:48 »
I bought another AC at auction last Saturday. The plan is to run it this summer until my 16/66 restoration is completed, hopefully sooner rather than later, this year. I then intend spending time on my new purchase through winter.
