428 Frua Forum / Carb or ignition?
« on: June 29, 2017, 19:28:16 »
Hi, make sure your in line petrol filter is of the larger size. Not enough flow in the smaller one when you go fast. Had the opposite problem a few months back, rubbish at low revs, ok after 2000 but that was just timing and points gap. Found the points very hard to get right with feeler gauges, could only get them set properly with a dwell meter.

Hi Emmanueld
Thanks for the reply and link. Not sure why there's a ballast resistor either and have no idea if the coil is 6 or 12 volt, there are no indications on it at all. Knowing what someone else has and works is probably the best way to go.
How's your car coming along as it sounds from your post that you're using it?

What I have are some figures under the heading; Removal of front hub.

   Castor angle 3 degrees
   Camber angle front Nil
Camber angle rear 2 degrees negative
Toe in front wheels sixteenth of an inch
   King pin inclination 11 degrees

Hopefully there's something in there for someone to be able to sort it out.

Morning and thanks for the replies.

Had a look in that old fashioned thing called a book, which I'd completely forgotten about, and there was some measurements. Hopefully that'll be all that's needed to sort it out.

   Thanks guys.

Spoke to the engine guy today and the custom exhaust place is Power and Performance.co.uk and the chap is called Matk Stacey. They also have a contact who can weld the manifolds. The phone no. is 01603 880060 in case you can't find the website.

Hi Cliff
I will be speaking to the guy who is doing the engine next week to get a date for fitting new heads etc and I'll get the info from him and let you know. There was a delay in getting the heads but if that's sorted they should be being changed in the next 4/5 weeks so if you can wait that long I can get the part no. for the manifolds then.

Hi Clifford
I met up with the guy who is doing the work on my engine at a place where they fabricate stainless steel manifolds and asked about getting them made up for mine. He seemed confident about doing it but it was going to cost around £1000. With all the expense of the engine that'll have to wait til the winter. Don't know how far south you are but this place is just outside Norwich.
As a temporary fix on my manifold I used Chemical Metal, made by Plastic Padding. Worked really well and may be worth a try.

Hi Andy and Jeff
I plan to do all the things you suggest but one thing at a time, alas. Last year it was the interior, so nice to get into a car with carpets. Put plenty of insulation in aswell so hope not to cook this summer. This year it's going to be engine.
Hadn't thought about ali heads. Could go that way and leave the exhaust manifolds for a later time. My thinking being if I get the engine up to scratch, the ancilleries can be done as and when.
Not fussed about originality, just want the car to be good and useable, so modern intake and carb it is. Edelbrock seem to do everything I need, including the heads. Fans will be replaced. Got the original? twin Smiths ones and guessing you can get better ones now.
Had assumed the oil cooler did the engine, what with all the overheating problems A.C. had with the car. Will see how the temp gauge behaves after I've had all these things done.
I do remember speaking to Andy about going manual when I first got the car(many years ago)and even then he said the auto suited the car best. At the time I thought he was mad, but, now, I have to say I agree with him. Mind you, that could change when I get the suspension done. Could even change when I get the engine done.
Thanks for your advice, no doubt I'll be back on here again asking more inane questions.

Hi guys
My dash is the later one and the window switches are the big square ones, made by Miraglio. Took the car to a little TV repair shop this morning and the guy took the switch out, took it apart, cleaned all the contacts and now seems to work perfectly. I guess I was lucky that the switch only needed a clean up but I did ask, with you guys in mind, if it would be possible to have it fixed if there were any serious problems and he seemed fairly confident. Although he did add the "can't guarantee" proviso. So, Shep, if you have a Miraglio window switch, they can be taken apart and possibly repaired. Cliffordl, do you know if the Clear Hooter ones are sealed?
Had a chat with another guy about seat belts and all the mounting points will take an inertia reel set without any modifications. Just got to find some that look like they came from the 70s. Shep, were the ones you had fitted period pieces or modern replacements?
            Thanks for your replies

428 Frua Forum / Frua sills
« on: June 04, 2009, 20:14:24 »
Hi Emmanueld, yes,all done thanks. A guy at U.S. Autocare, who I use for engine parts did it. Didn't realize how much of a mess it was down there or how many times they had been bodged. Fabricated everything himself, has put in a series of holes to inject waxoyl at the back and even strengthened the jacking points. Not that I'll ever use them.
Good to have it back on the road after a two years.

Hi Emmanueld and Paul
I feared it would'nt be easy as everyone that looks at it seems to take a backward step.Pictures would be very much appreciated. Are they on the thread of your rebuild or do you need to post them/send them seperately. Many thanks for the information
The car is CF58,coupe and automatic. It had a chassis and engine rebuild about 10,000 miles ago, done by the previous owner, and I've had it since 2003.Had the bodywork rubbed down and resprayed(except for the sills)and rechromed everything apart from bumpers.Doesn't have a front grille, which is why I couldn't help Englishman on his request. Will try and post pictures, but never done it before,so don't hold your breath.

428 Frua Forum / Engine Heat CF64
« on: January 27, 2008, 20:35:38 »
Hi Michael,
Shame I didn't get your message earlier as I went to the I.O.W. in September so could have mad a detour.
You say you are disappointed with the temp on the road, so do you think it is worth doing or is the money spent not worth the gain?
Mine is having the sills done in 3-4 weeks I am also hoping to have a front spoiler made as Emmanueld has (may go a bit bigger as I've heard size is important) so the temp will have a lower starting point when I do hit traffic.
I did find on the I.O.W. trip that the oil level had gone form the full mark on leaving to about a quarter above the low on returning with the temp at around half on the way there and rising to three quarters on the way back (at which point my courage failed me and I pulled over for an hour).  As it was my first long run in the car (I live in Suffolk) I was wondering if the drop in oil level was the cause or was it just an old car quirk?
many thanks for the info Dave

Hi All,
Most of my overheating problems stem from sitting in traffic and lots of the solutions that have been mentioned seem to be great when you're moving but not so good when you're stationary (this happens quite a lot in the UK).  Like Cass I would hate to mess with the shape, so have been toying with the idea of fitting electric fans to draw the heat out of the engine bay through the wheel arch louvres.
Does anyone think this would work?  Is anyone aware if this has been tried before?  Any thoughts would be most welcome.
As regards to the oil cooler, mine has one and I thought they all did.
   Dave.
