428 Frua Forum / CF9

Don't want to be pedantic but I question your posting on 15 December re the steering wheel being Motalita. All the pictures I have show the Cobra wheel but not the 428 having 9 plugs presumably over rivets as you mention and the tapered slots in the spokes look wider on the Cobra than on the 428. The wheel on CF6 was made by Walsall Wheels Ltd. This is engraved next to the rim on the back of the spoke at 6 o'clock. If you turn the wheel 1/2 a turn to get this to the top and use a mirror you may see the same marking on your wheel - or perhaps not? Probably academic as I suspect Walsall Wheels are no longer in business and so Motalita is the first port of call. But apart from the cosmetic differences there may be differences in diameter (CF6 is 15 3/8"), dishing and hub size (CF6 is 48 spline and , I think but haven't checked, 3/4" OD). Just a cautionary note for Damien.
I have always thought the indicator/horn/headlight stalk switch was UK Ford (Cortina etc). CF6 switch is Lucas 35744A; the shroud round the column and switch is fibreglass which looks like home made at Thames Ditton. Surely Jaguar shrouds were all plastic mouldings?

428 Frua Forum / Trading Post: Looking for.../Looking to sell...
« on: December 31, 2007, 00:54:45 »
I have just discovered this forum and find it very interesting. I have owned CF6 - manual convertible - for nearly six years and have got my 'to do' list down to a manageable size! Perhaps I can add some info to this thread.

Front badge : I couldn't see Clifford's photobucket picture because my screen said 'illegal operation, shut down......' but then I understand cars more than computers. I think CF6 has a standard front badge setup. The badge is 2 3/16" diameter and looks like the ebay pictures and identical to the AC badges on Ace and Aceca- cast brass and chromium plated. The front panel has a hole surrounded by a chrome bezel on a rubber seating. The bezel is, in mm presumably ex Frua, approx 68.7 OD, 61.5 ID, 13.8 top depth and 25.0 bottom depth. The badge is mounted independently of the bezel and not in the plane of the front panel leaving a gap at the bottom, maybe 1/16", but I see this as an odd way to mount it rather than 'ventilated'. The background of my badge is painted black but I think it should be all chrome and unpainted. Without taking it apart I can't see how it is all assembled but I wonder if the hole in the front panel is necessary.

Fog/Spot lights : A subjective view but I think the beauty of the car is spoilt by the ugly lights and number plate. If I owned CF7 I would certainly transfer the lights to the stores. Italian plates were always small and they usually didn't make provision for standard size UK plates.CF6 has a small, probably illegal, plate just below the bumpers.

Rear lights : CF6 has Altissimo lights which were fitted also to Alfa Romeo Guilia 1600Ti and Super 4 door saloons 1962 to about 1965 - see police cars in the Italian Job film ? I think they were also fitted to some early Fiat 124 Spyders but not certain. Do all 428s have Altissimo? Some of the Guilias were fitted with lights by Carello which are better engineered than Altissimo; they are not identical but would fit the 428. I got Altissimo lenses from Classic Alfa in London - see Classic Alfa website. Run by Richard Norris - a nice chap and very helpful.

Rubber seals : I have given up on finding direct replacements. Do we know a keen 428 owner in Italy who might track them down? I did source in the UK sections for the 1/4 lights (a tricky job but OK) and 1/4 light frame to windscreen pillar (OK but needs a bit of detail development).

Parts sourcing : I agree with Clifford that we ought to pool our knowledge of parts which were not unique to AC and therefore could be available via another application. Some years ago Action published a list of Ace and Aceca crossreferences (eg Aceca door handle = P4 Rover and a Reliant) I have also seen a similar listing for the 3000ME. If we could get a 428 list started this would surely encourage others to add to it. I see a letter in the current Action along the same lines but think it is most likely to be achieved in this forum. Perhaps one of you with the IT skills could co-ordinate it but the contributions would be from many and would be peer reviewed and potentially changed before the listing became final.

Hope this contribution wasn't too long and that it may have been helpful.

428 Frua Forum / When is a 428 not a 428?
« on: February 28, 2009, 20:48:05 »
Always I would say, in the sense that the FE428 engine displacement is less than 427 cu.ins. by my calculation. I was reminded of this when I recently looked at 'AC Frua' on Wikipedia. When I look closely I think I detect Emmanuel's prints on it; does he plead guilty or not guilty?
The displacement must start with the bore and stroke in inches as Ford didn't mess about with this metric stuff. The standard figures quoted are: '427': 4.23 x 3.78 inches (=107.4 x 96.0 mm rounded)
               '428': 4.13 x 3.98 inches (=104.9 x 101.1 mm rounded).  Displacements are:
                                                                                        '427': 424.97 cu.ins. = 6,963.9 cc
                         Say 425 cid / 6,964 cc

                  '428': 426.54 cu.ins. = 6,989.8 cc
                         Say 427 cid / 6,990 cc
   (I use pi=3.1416/1 inch=25.4 mm/1 cubic inch=16.3871 cc)

A few other points on Wikipedia. Surely 96 inch wheelbase not 95. John Mclellan quoted Mike Taylor(who he?)and his Autocar quote ended at 'which cares'. The 'joined that select company' bit was JM not Autocar. I thought the only special body was 81 with pop-up headlights; what are the other two? I fancy this fully adjustable front suspension stuff; where can I get some? I think the axle ratios are 49/17=2.88 and 43/14=3.07. The combination of 91 octane 'pump gas' and 10.5 (standard?) compression ratio seems risky to me and therefore best left to bankers. High speed detonation could make an awful mess of those lovely new pistons Emmanuel showed us. I use 99 or 100 octane and sleep well at night.
I think the performance figures are a bit muddled. The John Bolster road test in Autosport (4.10.68) and also the Motor (28.9.68) and Autocar (4.7.68) road tests were all CF7 with auto box. Were other reliable road tests done?
I am told Wikipedia entries can be changed but I couldn't manage that. Perhaps, in the interests of accuracy, one of you chaps might do it?

P.S. Hope none of you are bankers!
