Post by: 1985 CCX on December 27, 2019, 02:05:09
New project
Add Sunburst wheels to my MKIV
The trick will be to retain the original exhaust ......
Offset and tire size will be key
Planning Goodyear Power Cushion

Gary's Sunbursts I assume.

What backspace do they have?

Yes
I’ll have to go measure.
Think the same as the 60’s car as I have one of those too
With narrower tire should allow it to work?
I’ll put the wheels on this weekend

Ok, roadblock
With the current exhaust the sunburst gets tire within 1” of the SS muffler.
The FIA allows for the same 1.5” that the MKIV wheel does.
Will need to do more measuring but may use mag FIA ?
15” fills wheel-well out nicely.

Thoughts?

I expected the closer distance from rubber to exhaust with the Sunbursts, therefore i asked for the backspace.

That problem is not existing with the real 427 street exhaust routing were the axle loop is partially inside the cutted trunk tub and covered with the always visible covers inside the tub.

In addition to the FIAs I would suggest to mount nothing bigger then 255 at the rear. With my 275 rear, even with deleted resonators and re routed exhaust tube loop the distance on the rh side is quite small. So wrapping with good wrapping tape is necessary.

Next time I need to replace my rear tires (and that will happen soon with the AVONs)  I will switch from 275 to 255.

Correct not much room under the fender.  I already have a typical Cobra with race wheels etc so my choice for tires is Goodyear Power Cushion in pics above.
They were the street tire in the 60's and will handle well, as I am a stock 225hp stability should be fine.
Will plan to wrap exhaust as dropping the under fender heat can only be a good factor for tires, alloy body and paint.

Drives 100% better.

Hugs the road, differently but nice.
Very happy with the choice.
