Title: Cold air box and air filter for triple SU's
Post by: GSouthee on January 07, 2016, 18:07:46
Hi ya

Now carbs all sorted and engine running well, I've decided to make a cold air box with an improved single cone filter to replace the 3 wire mesh air filters (not really sure what they filter as very poor at it). I have started making it and will put some pics on here soon. It should allow much better filtering of dust particles and give a cold/cooler air feed to carbs improving running.

   Any thoughts.

   Cheers  Gary

This is not an answer (sorry) but more of a question,  are the original mesh items flame traps rather than filters?

They are the original oil dipped wire mesh filters, poss flame traps but states filters in the handbook.

Bot main problem other than obvious poor filtration of dust is that they are in engine bay sucking in warm air, would get better performance etc by sucking in cool air as well as better filtration from a more modern K&N filter.

Cant find any modern filter types to fit 1 1/8 su as they are push on type not bolt on like on most su's.

Is it not possible to fit a modern paper element inside the casings?

Hi  Graham

Yes had thought of cutting the original filters about to fit modern paper or K&N type inners to them but thought if at a later date someone wanted to fit the originals back on they would be ruined.

Also the fact remains that warm air is still being sucked in and a cooler air charge would produce a denser air fuel mix.

I know its not a racing car but any improvement must be beneficial.

I will be making other improvements in due course to the engine breathing as I go along like on the exhaust side of things as well.

   Cheers  G
