Title: AK 1216
Post by: BBK on June 10, 2012, 06:26:30
As the old saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens.  I was the buyer of AK 1011 (the black EBay car) as covered in my post in the recent forum topic on AK 1011.  That sale fell apart when the seller decided to back out of the sale.  While disappointed that I was unable to buy that car, everything happens for a reason I guess.  It ends up that I found AK 1216 just a 45 minute drive from my home at a classic car dealer in Burlingame, CA, south of San Francisco.  The dealer is Cammisa Motor Cars and they had a 1987 AC Mk IV, BRG over tan leather.  The original owner was a local man who imported the car directly from the AC factory in January 1988, and subsequently sold the car to his business partner about 7 years later.  This second owner was the party who consigned AK 1216 to Cammisa for sale.  I saw the car last weekend.  I had a PPI performed at a local well known repair shop that specializes in classic cars and it passed with flying colors with the exception of a few small items I will take care of.  The car is beautiful.  It has been driven and has around 23,000 miles on it.  It has been well maintained and I have all of the service history back to the beginning and all of the correspondence with Autokraft regarding the purchase and the importation of the car to Oakland, CA.  I have left the car at the dealer to have them provide an estimate for filling some paint chips and to possibly dye the leather as it is worn a bit.  I should have it in about a week.  It drives amazingly and is very fast and sounds terrific!!  I am very excited to finally own an AC car, which has been something I have wanted to do for many many years.  WIth the 50th anniversary this year of the Cobra, I am hoping to attend the Monterey Historic races at Laguna Seca raceway on the Monterey peninsula in August and drive my Mk IV there for the races.  I do not know how to post photos of my car on this site, so I have provided a Photobucket link if anyone is interested in seeing the car.  It is a CA smog legal car, so that is a big hurdle that I do not have to deal with as I would have with AK 1011.

Congratulations and welcome to the AC community. The seats have a nice patina - leave them as they are if they are not damaged (what cann´t be judged from the photos).

Thank you both for your well wishes and for posting many of the photos. I have gone back and forth a bit regarding the leather. I may end up just leaving the seats the way they are with 25 years of use. I too like the patina.  The leather is more worn looking on the tops of the seats and looks to be starting to crack a little thus my thought on trying to restore and protect the leather. I will see what the dealer's interior man has to say and then decide.  Other than that the car is as it came from the factory except for the radio and electronic ignition and addition of the wind wings. There's a car show in the next town over that I hope to display it in this fall. The show is the Danville D'Elegance that benefits Parkinson's Disease. The show has grown and gotten better each year. Should be fun to have it in that event!  Coincidentally Cammisa is a show sponsor and they encouraged entering it in the event. I'm not sure if AK 1216 is in the AC registry.  If not, how do I go about entering it?  Is it through the process of filling out the application that is part of the home page?

PS: IMHO, the leather can be restored with the appropriate products...

+1 on dkp's comments.   The register shows it as Jaguar Racing Green with tan trim/tonneau and wind wings.   Other than the build date (1987) and chassis number there are no other details.   I am sure Alan would be happy to know of any gaps that can be filled in.

Thank you to all for your welcoming and helpful posts.  I will be sure to get a hold of the registrar and join the club too.  Chafford, thank you for the mention of the dinner in Pacific Grove (a lovely town). I will be sure to get a hold of Jerry Rosenstock.  Advertised price for the car was $89,000. Gave them a lower initial offer somewhat based on a midnight blue Mk IV that sold a few months ago at a dealer (Fast Lane Classic Cars in Missouri). That car sold for $65,000 per the dealer. Absolutely gorgeous car with side pipes that the dealer said was ordered that way from the factory (but I digress!).  I was disappointed to have missed that car though happy nonetheless with mine!  I offered in the low $70's and was shot down. Made another in the upper $70's and it was accepted.  With this, I will need to invest some money to fix some of the paint issues (cannot tell in the photos) including a good size chip in the passenger door and to deal with a wheel bearing that needs attention and to tune it and change all the fluids.  Hoping for no other surprises, but as the car has not been driven much the last few years, I am expecting a few things to crop up.  I believe I paid a reasonable price. French Frie...timing is everything!  I was lucky to have found the car when I did.  Best
wishes to your friend in finding another car.  I will keep my eyes opened over here and let you know if I see another another car.  The BRG paint over tan is a fantastic combination and was ordered by the original owner this way.  I imagine that fixing AK 1011 would have cost more in the long run.  The original owner, who is a good client of the dealer, has a couple of beautiful old Jags there on consignment.  A good buying experience if anyone is interested in a car at this dealer.

That is the Midnight Blue car I mentioned that was sold by Fast Lane in Missouri. If he gets his price he will make a nice profit. It is modified from stock specification more than I thought.  Makes me feel that the price I paid is in line with what I have seen advertised in the U.S.  Considering my car is CA smog legal (saving me a huge hassle) and I have all of the history back to correspondence with the factory for ordering the car, importation paperwork and entire service history, I feel the price I paid is a good one and an indicator of current fair market value here in the U.S.  Based on the remarks of the Club Cobra members perhaps they are not up to speed on the uniqueness and rarity of a real AC car.

$80k seems to be the going price for Mk IVs in the States. The Club Cobra comment that the car is worth less than half the advertised price is laughable. As matter of interest, did you find out how much Redline wanted for their red LHD Mk IV? I'm sure it would be a lot more than $80k!

Post by: French Frie on June 10, 2012, 21:00:15
Thanks for the link to the midnight blue car, my friend was already dealing with the seller ... He kept the car for a very short period ! But the car is very interesting, as it has some of the mods he wanted, and yes the seller may make a nice profit, but if it is the price you're prepared to pay for, who cares [;)] ?

More important, BBK, did you see this car "in flesh" when it was for sale by fastlane ?
Title: AK 1216
Post by: BBK on June 10, 2012, 21:00:52
I think $80,000 is about right. I did not check on the Redline car as I found the Cammisa car around the same time as your mention of the Redline one. I bet that car is a lot more than cars here in the States.

FF, I agree that if he makes a nice profit more power to him. He sees the true value to the car. No, I did not see the blue car.....just the photos. If the photos of that car are an indication of the condition, then it is a great car. My AK 1216 looks similarly nice in the pictures that Cammisa had on their site.  However, one can never quite tell without seeing the car in person.  If your friend wishes to purchase it, he should get a PPI from a reputable local shop in the area.  Perhaps the seller can advise where locally in Texas he can have it investigated.  Also, in spending that sum of money he should fly to Texas to drive it and see it in the flesh before committing to a purchase.

I own AEX 674, an Aceca, RS 5038, An Ace and a Kirkham 289 FIA replica.
I am AC struck in a bad way! Living in northern MI, I have only seen very few AC's in the flesh. It would be fantastic to see them all gathered up together at one of the meets in the UK someday... it will happen!

Needless to say, Monterey would be luvverly (long to get back there!) but the old finances are noticeable by their absence. And Legate Towers are still crumbling and requiring mucho renovation. Gus, Krantz is not all that common a name, but am not related to Lee (no relatives in MI).  If your friend Ron has room in his truck for your car, that would be great!  If not, if you can find a way to get it here you won't be disappointed.  I spent a week in Monterey last year.  Jaguar was the featured marque.  I have a 2007 XKR convertible and had it in the Jaguar paddock area at the track and got to drive a couple of laps on the track with the rest of the Jaguar group.  Lots of fun!  Nothing better than top down driving in CA in the summer along the coast.  Carmel is a terrific town and you get to see all of your dream cars driving around the entire Monterey peninsula.  I almost got whiplash from looking at all of the amazing cars I have always loved, most of them having seen in books vs. on the street.

Well, I got AK 1216 home yesterday after having some paint issues addressed at the dealer.  Knowing it was going to be a hot one outside, we got an early start.  Nice and cool in Burlingame but when I got to San Ramon (about 20 miles inland from S.F. Bay) it was already in the 90's.  Topped out at 105 degrees yesterday but she was safe in the garage by then.  Ran like a champ and performed great.  Next step is to get it into the shop and have them go through it and change all fluids and tune it and generally get it in tip top shape.   Took it on a spin on some back roads this morning as a "Father's Day" treat and it was fantastic.  My lovely wife purchased a copy of Trevor Legate's "Cobra, The First 40 Years" for me and somehow managed to get it here from England (the U.S. version has a different cover) in time for Father's Day.  A terrific, high quality book and looking forward to reading it in much more detail! Trevor.....a beautiful book you have made!

You're welcome Trevor.  It is a beautiful book.  I read the section on Autokraft and beyond last night...what a story.  Brian Angliss sounds like an amazing guy.  Not surprised about his experience with Ford.  I imagine that such an "Almighty" corporation may have played some hardball with Mr. Angliss.  An unfortunate turn of events that eventually took place.  I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.  I imagine that the forums may have this somewhere, but what happened to Brian Angliss?  Hopefully all is well with him.
