Anzani-engined AC - this video taken at Watchet in Somerset (old machinery theme continues on the video with footage of a steam train).

This is the same AC-4 that went on to sell for £34,000 in July this year:

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Another vintage Six sells in one day!
« on: November 27, 2013, 22:01:42 »
This one was advertised on PreWar Car also (just like the last, a few postings back). Originally bought in 1930 as a Magna Coupe. Then taken to Zimbabwe where in the 1960's it was in quite a state. It was rebodied with cycle wings and a fabric boat tail (so far from original) but looked sporty to some eyes. It came back to the UK. Apparently now a sorted car, it sold for £26750.

Here's what it looked like in Zimababwe after the rebuild.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Good photo - Mrs Bruce and AC
« on: November 21, 2013, 21:01:40 »
Here's a good photo, one I hadn't seen before, of Mrs Bruce with an AC 4-door saloon, after getting a 'first prize' and a 'special prize' at the 1928 Bournemouth Concours d'Elegance. Note, the large cups as awards!

PS Looks like the tracking needs sorting. Don't think it would win today's style of Concours events with tyres like that...

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Photos from 1920's of ACs
« on: September 18, 2013, 14:38:51 »

A picture/postcard dealer has some shots from the mid-20's for sale on Ebay. They show twelve personal photos, I assume from a deceased's estate, of their AC which was obviously treasured by its owners. Delightful hand-written captions ‘AC’s on the coast road’, ‘On the way to Darlington’ and ‘The old 1923 AC – the 1926 AC’. I noticed one of the cars has had its front lights repositioned to the top of the wings.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Video from Norway of 1924 AC Royal
« on: August 25, 2013, 14:08:24 »
A nice video from Norway (I think!). Haven't a clue what they're saying, maybe someone can translate? But, this smart restored AC has, obviously, won first prize at a car meeting. This car, I believe, was originally the UK registration KL 649.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / Couple of vintage questions
« on: June 17, 2013, 19:10:14 »
The Stilltime Collection (see postings below, titled 'Historic photos of AC's') has the two photos below. I believe they show the Hon. Victor Bruce and his wife Mildred. What they are doing, and why waving as if to gain attention, I don't know. These are likely factory publicity shots taken at Thames Ditton, and they may have been used to show the dropped hood on this 6-cyl. Aceca open/closed coupé.

The model was advertised with side glass. Most (all?) had wind-up windows, so I wonder if anyone can tell me the purpose of the door strap? Was this to raise the window glass, before the introduction of winder mechanism and internal handle (as clearly not on this car)?

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / AC debts in 1927
« on: May 21, 2013, 17:08:19 »
For interest, here's a newspaper snippet from 1927, showing that creditors were owed £182,795 at the AC Cars voluntary liquidation. S. F. Edge subsequently did provide the capital for the new company, AC (Acedes) Ltd.

Amazing! This car has been in the ownership of 2 families only since 1924, and has covered only 7000 miles in those 89 years!!!

The usual photos show Victor Bruce at the finish, showing proudly the Union Flag, or alongside the 1926 winner's trophy. Here’s some other photos – firstly from 1926, showing Victor Bruce in the snow, en route in Scotland, and looking as if he’s not enjoying the weather, nor the cold, at all. Secondly, some shots of Mildred Bruce with the AC saloon, driven by her in the 1927 event - powering around a corner on the hill climb section, tinkering with the car, and posing with the car for the photographers after winning the Coupe des Dames. Finally, with the same car which looks a little worse for wear.

Vintage, PVT & 2 Litre Forum / A 1923 S. F. Edge patent
« on: April 27, 2013, 22:09:12 »
Whilst searching for a patent, from the 1920’s, I came across one registered in 1923 by S F Edge and AC Cars. It was for, what we now call, quarter-light windows. The adaptation, together with the in-built wind-up window channels, led shortly to the introduction of both the Aceca model and SFE Special (from the ‘standard’ 2/3 seaters). Here’s a summary, for interest:

   Patent GB216283

216,283. Edge, S. F., and A.C. Cars, Ltd. April 11, 1923. Wind-screens.-The space between the edge of the inclined front screen 1 of a vehicle and the vertical edge of the side window 3 is filled by a triangular panel 4 detachably or otherwise secured to the body or front screen. On the rear and bottom edges the panel has fastening means such as press-studs 8 to connect the panel with the window guide 18 and with the body. The panel may be hinged to the front screen or may be permanently fixed to the door, and may form a guide for the sliding window
