Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Re: Aceca registrar
« on: February 09, 2019, 22:27:43 »
On the topic of technical data and after making a few personal observations I was brought to compile the registers for cars originally using Bristol engines and came up with something that looks like this.
I started from the Ace Bristol register which gave the basic format but added a few columns.
The "Latest Update" column in particular mentions the date when the last bit of information on a given chassis number was entered, which I feel is somewhat important.

(The powers of Excel allowed me to highlight that 16 Bristol engines were each fitted at the factory in 2 different chassis numbers - I know the Bristol engine has many qualities but being ubiquitous is a bit much surely?)

This is a possible way to reformat all the registers. I am happy to volunteer if I am provided with all the current registers in an Excel format. I have no ambition as a registrar but happy to bring a more user-friendly and relevant formatting if it might be of any use.

I have been converting the pdf version of the various Ace Registers to Excel format for my personal use.  If you have a copy of Acrobat Pro, simply save the file as an Excel file and you are good to go with just minor cleanup.  If the pdf version has some missing lines in the tables (some do) then you have to manually draw the lines in the pdf copy of the file before you convert it to Excel.  If you don't add the missing lines, then Acrobat doesn't know how to convert the tables and you end up with long data strings.

You correctly point out the fact the Registers do not have common formats or naming terminology so combining them is a pain.

Good luck,
Bert

Hector,
If you need information on the correct tools please contact my friend Greg at gsb1159@pacbell.net.  Greg has an Aceca and has been down this road before.

I suggest you google "rubber supply" company and look for a rubber supply shop near you.  Here in California we have a few industrial supply companies near by and they stock all kinds of rubber goods.  I have found them very good in supplying various rubber parts that can be used for gaskets, shims, mats, spacers, etc.  The trick is to find a counter man that is willing to talk with you and show you what goods he has on the shelves in back.  You may have to purchase much more stock than you need, or sometimes they have remnants.  Good luck.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Re: 1958 Sebring ? / Neat Old Photo

Keith,

You're welcome!
The interesting thing about Janos is that he is a professional researcher and really knows how to stuff the book full of facts while making a very readable story about each race.  The books cover the history of the World Championship for Sports Cars from 1953 until 1992.  He is also very good at putting each race into context in regards to the current rules and the state of race car development at the time.  There is an excellent forward by Phil Hill if I remember correctly.  (my books are stuffed away in another room that I can't get to just now because of a project my wife is doing)

To illustrate how thorough Janos was, I used to work with a fellow who competed at Sebring in 1985 and 1986 with a car of his own design.  The car was called an OVS, which were the initials for O'Brien (my friend) and Van Steenburg, his partner, and of course, no one has ever heard of this car.  Janos described the car and even had a picture of it in his book.  After I showed Larry O'Brien the photo of his car, he went and bought the book the next day!

The body for BEX239 is coming along very slowly, I must attend to that.  The nephew of the original owner, Gordon Crowder, came by the house last weekend to view the car for the first time in nearly 60 years.  He was impressed that I had progressed to the point I am and he promised to deliver the horns he took off the car when it was wrecked 60 years ago!

Keith,
Here is your West Coast follow-up!
The book Janos was researching was entitled Time and Two Seats
It is a fantastic book, highly recommended.  Unfortunately, it is long out of print.
Many Aces are listed in the book.

Here is a link to Amazon for the book for those interested.
https://www.amazon.com/Time-Seats-Decades-Distance-Racing/dp/0967225205
There are 4 volumes of photographic books that accompany the two volume Time and Two Seats books.
Light reading!   :)

Cobra (Thames Ditton) Forum / Re: CSX2493 offered for sale

Here is a screenshot of it when it was over at Canepa's with the Belanger's and a photo I took at Stewart Hall's shop when 2493 was in pieces.

Yes, I agree it was unique!  Looking at the current shots appears to confirm the Registry's note about the roll bar being installed in a "forward" location compared to the way the Shelby guys installed them in Venice, (that is if my eyes are not deceiving me).  Other chassis photos taken at Canepas and Halls confirm the unusual installation. The car spent a long time here in California.

I remember seeing this car in pieces over at Stewart Hall's shop in Benicia Calif about 10 years ago.  It was green then.

The Council agreeing to get quotes on direct posting forum software is a step in the right direction!  It is a real shame to see posts that have recorded significant pieces of AC history with their posted pictures now lost because of the actions of a third party photo hosting service.  It will be next to impossible to re-establish those links unless the original poster takes a huge amount of time to relink all those photos.  We still have the written words in the posts, but losing the pictures is distressing.

The only way to go for the future is direct hosting, as many other organizations do.   Thanks

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Linda Scott racing Bill Love's Ace
« on: March 02, 2017, 05:16:23 »
Kelly,
Thanks for the sad update on Linda.  I have periodically checked with my Cal Club friends Frankie Monise and Jerry Barker from time to time about what they remembered about Linda or her whereabouts but I always struck out.

   Regards, Bert

PS. There is another photo of Linda in Bill Love's Ace on the Henry Ford website that features Dave Friedman's photography.  Dave took the photo at the Cal Club sponsored Santa Barbara race in June 1958.
