Barrie,

Yes the early cars do seem to have a number of idiosyncrasies. I don’t think 31 ever had  any front overriders, merely that bolts where fitted on the front, just like you pointed out.

One of the images must be from the first couple of weeks of the cars existence here in Sweden.

As far as I have been able to find out 31 never did any racing. I spoke to the sun today and he had no memory at all of any racing. Interestingly enough AE 25, that did have overriders both from and rear, was raced for a number of years in both Sweden and Denmark!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your input. I’m using Millers Classic Sport 20w50 oil in my gearbox. I did check this with Billy Bellinger that built the gearbox, he also does the gearboxes for Jaguar Classic, i.e. the ones that are used in the D-type, XKSS amongst others, and if my memory serves me right he said this oil would be fine to use. I’ll double check!

I have been toying with the idea of using a thicker oil, but people in the know has told me that it probably wouldn’t make any difference. Again, I’m lost here!

So I’m still struggling to understand why this has happened. However I did speak to a mechanic here in Sweden that has worked on other English cars from the same era and he claimes that the speedometer problem I’ve encountered is not that unusual for sports cars at least from the 1950’s.

So I guess, it would be interesting to hear if anybody else, ever has had this problem with and AC engines Ace with a Miss gearbox?

Thanks Nick. Any other thoughts anybody?

Thanks. Jonas

Barrie,

Thanks for posting and may I say that 22 looks very nice indeed. An overrider question that I have been wondering about for years is if my car AEX 31 ever had any overriders fitted from new, since when restoring the car, no real traces was found.

Now 67 years after the car made its way to Sweden I was fortunate enough to get ahold of some images from the first owners son, now himself in his mid 70’s.

The images clearly shows that there weren’t any overriders fitted the first summer of 31’s life. One of  the images shows the car with Swedish import plates, something that it only would have had for the first week or so.

Interesting no?

Barrie,

Thanks again for helping out with this. Please see the attached image showing that the speedometer does indeed run clockwise. I believe the masses of silicone was put there when I had the old gearbox refurbished in England some 20 years ago. The work was done by a reputable firm that possibly had stumbled upon this dilemma themselves?

I have discussed this with another AC enthusiast and as much as I would like to find out the reason for the oil making its way up the cable I have now decided to try and stop the oil at the start of its journey. Hopefully fitting a minute lip seal at the end of the drive shaft will do the trick.

I will certainly post an update as soon as I have tried this. The seal I have ordered is 15 x 10 x 4 mm and won’t be with me for another week. Some slight machining to both the brass drive shaft housing  as well as on the end of the srive shaft is, god willing, the solution.

Barrie,

I finally manage to get the old speedometer drive out of the old gearbox. I does look exactly like the other one I have. There is in big difference however, the holes in the steel drive shaft axel is filled up with silicon, please see the attached image, I assume there is a reason for this!

Any thoughts?

Barrie,

Yes I am absolutely sure that the speedometer was working just fine until I fitted the “new” gearbox. It also took several miles, I would guess at least 50-60 miles before the oil made its way, in sufficient amounts to affect the magnetic discs in the speedometer.

I’m not sure if the time it took would indicate pressure or pumping beng the cause?

I am like you baffled about all of this. I’m still trying to get the old drive off. Maybe inspecting this will shed some new light on the mystery.

Barrie,

Thank you so much for taking the time to pull out your speedometer drive and for supplying me and the community with an image.

It does look identical to the one I have fitted at the moment. I suspect that the problem with mine might very well be that the fit in between the brass housing and the steel axel isn’t very tight. In actual fact I do know the axel came out very easily. I’ll take it out and measure it soon. I suspect the tolerance in between the two parts shouldn’t be more than 2 or 3 thou?

Barrie, with your experience do you think that this could be the problem?

Again thanks for taking the time and effort to help me solve this conundrum.

Barrie,

These parts wasn’t with AEX 31 from new, this speedo drive came with a gearbox I got from Billy Bellinger some years ago. I guess it’s from a two litre saloon and rebuilt by Billy with full synchro on all gears and a slightly different ratio on 2nd and 3rd gears.

I do have the original gearbox and the drive that was fitted originally but so far I haven’t been able to get the drive off since it was fitted with loads of silicon by somebody, at some stage in its life.

So any comparison has so far been impossible. I guess that the problem lies in how the drive functions.

The Speedo did work fine until the oil made its way into that housing. In other words I never had these problems before I changed the gearbox...

If anybody out there has an original speedometer drive that is not fitted to their car I would indeed be interesting to compare if 1, they look the same and 2, if there is any O ring fitted.

I did listen to the Flanders and Swan song and though I have a bit of a problem seing the similarities with me speedometer problem it is indeed a lovely song.

Thank you.

Barrie,
That makes sense. Oil level is one of the things I have checked. Another experienced AC related friend mentioned that a very worn drive could maybe also be the cause of this.... also makes sense.

There is no O ring in the drive that I have got, so if anybody knows if there should be, please let
me know.

Thanks Barrie.

Thanks for your reply,

I have no idea if the speedometer drive could run in the wrong direction. Anybody out there that
know about that or have any other ideas?

Thanks Jonas

Dear All,

I’ve encountered a problem that I hope somebody on this forum might
have encountered or at least heard about.

After changing the gearbox in AEX 31 two years ago I find oil pushing up
through the speedometer cable, and subsequently filling the speedometer
with lovely gearbox lubricant! At First I preasumed that since the “new”
gearbox didn’t have a breather, fitting one would solve or lessen the problem
but it didn’t...

I’ve been thinking that something might be missing from the speedometer drive
in the gearbox. I’ve included an images hopping that somebody might be able
to tell me if there is a seal or gasket missing somewhere.

Very grateful for any help or learned opinions.

Kind regards Jonas

Robin,

Thanks for your input. Yes this does indeed make a lot of sense.

In actually fact, the reason for me looking for a new distributor
is that my old one, only some 5000 km after having been rebuilt,
is showing clear signs of what problems side load on the shaft can
cause!

Anybody out there having had any experience with the 23D6 that
is made by Crosswait & Gardiner?

Thank you.

Regards

Jonas

Robin,

Thank you. Yes I have tried Rod. Maybe I should consider trying
the 23D6.

Is there anybody out there with experience fitting one to a AC engine?
I would appreciate any feedback.

Kind regards

Jonas

Dear Robin,

Thank you. I did check with Martin and he doesn't have any "donor" DX6A
bodies at the moment.

I intend to use him if I do find a distributor, regardless of condition, at least more
or less regardless!

You wouldn't happen to have an old one in corner some where?!

Kind regards

Jonas
