Title: Chequered Flag 427
Post by: runt on September 07, 2007, 18:22:19
Hi all, leafing through the extracts from Mr Legate's book in 'Cobra' magazine, a pic shows the  white Chequered Flag Cobra 427 piloted by Bondurant/Piper followed by a Sunbeam Tiger of Unett/Calcutt, at the '66 Ilford Trophy, Brands.
Pic shows the 427 as a rhd, the Tiger a left hooker. Is this correct, or is it back to front, I thought the Woolfe road car GTM 777F was the first 427 converted to rhd..?

Mr.Legate reckons the pic is the right way round. CSX 3006 was sold to a race driver (W. Freeman)in the USA in 1965 and came with him to Europe when he was given a race contract. He sold it to a US Air Force captain based in France and The Chequered Flag brought it from him either late 65 or early-ish 66. It was converted to rhd, repainted and raced at Goodwood in May 66 (as well as Brands). Almost inevitably it returned to the USA, owned by Michael Schoen, and was converted back to LHD. The Woolfe Cobra (CSX3167) was purchased from John Tojeiro towards the end of 66 and probably not converted to rhd until 1967. All this stuff is in the SAAC World Registry.

Thanks for this Trevor, didn't realise John Tojeiro had owned the Woolfe car either; thought Feutel sold it to Woolfe.

Tojeiro brought both Feutels 427s for a princely sum of £1000 and sold them to Woolfe for £1000 each. He thought he had pulled off the deal of the century at the time. Read it and weep......

And my Dad sold CSX2131(39PH)for £2000 in 1973, well chuffed with a £400 profit from when he bought it in `67.

   Nice work, Pops. [xx(]

That's true Nik..but he wouldn't have driven it very far; he used to complain that the Cortina 1500 GT was ' a bit of a handful..!'

Thanks A Snake; great to know that all these legendary old warhorses survive, you have to respect anyone who could drive a 427 at racing speeds and finish the race unscathed.
