Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / SU Carb tuning
« on: September 07, 2007, 15:12:46 »
HELP!

Mt car is all done. I took car of the brakes, clutch and oil leak issues. With a brand new pedal box assembly. The pedals operate smooth like a new car.

Brakes are fantastic with the front Disc conversion. Steering is super tight and precise with the steering rack conversion. The car looks fantastic!.

But, in spite of the engine rebuild with upgrades such as a mild comp cam, new pistons and con rods, a ported head, new sleeves, gaskets etc and an increase in compression from stock to 9:1 ratio (according to Robin Woolmer) I can't seem to get power out of this engine.

I've had various widely ranging suggestions on timing with the new cam.
It is now set at 12 degrees advance and 36 total. the carbs are problematic. They have been completely rebuilt by professional SU guys. But they mostly do twin set ups for MG's. The plugs look good, it's not running lean or rich. But power feels flat. Synchronizing these carbs is problematic, largely I think due to the spring-linkage. The first carb always leads out before the others follow and open up.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions on tuning these SU's?

   Thanks,

I've got a bunch of photo's to upload, but man, does she look good! At least, I think so.
Put my first miles on it. Got a few issues to deal with: leaky bottom radiator hose, sweaty copper oil passages to the remote oil filter, and carbs that need some major tuning. Oh, and spongy soft brakes, because the front circuit is ever so slightly leaking at the master cylinder.
I guess one can't expect it to be perfect out of the box, or should I?

So hopefully we can get all these issue fixed before I take off to join the Carolina Trophy on September 9th at the Biltmore Estate.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / awaiting finish
« on: August 21, 2007, 03:56:15 »
While I am awaiting the finishing of my Aceca, this past weekend I had the pleasure of doing a track demo with Ron Mack (CSX 3106) and his 427 racing demon. Ron had donated track time in his original car for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the lucky winner of the auction got his ride. This was a part of the VSCDA Au Grattan vintage race festival in Grand Rapids, MI.  This lucky driver got to try to follow all of the 750 ponies around the track in my 289 FIA replica (Kirkham) Needless to say, getting on the straight end of the track the big block torque absolutely smoked the small block, but the sound from two race tuned cars with completely un-muffled sidepipes was great!
Anyway, I should finally be able to pick up the Aceca this week. I can't wait!!

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca build update

Here are a few more pictures, now it has some more leather in it. The red is bright, but not as bright as the picture would imply. The flash tends to bring the color out more than in real life. In my opinion it looks really good! Wrinkle finish on the gauge pods, epoxy coating inside the footwells and on the roll bar, big, fat fuel filler neck. This will be covered with leather wrapped aluminum cover. Engine is going together this week. Should be done before the end of this month, so Ron tells me....

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca build update
« on: May 21, 2007, 19:51:20 »
Here's some extra pictures as the car progresses. The interior has all new Aluminum paneling, covered in red (very red) leather. The pictures don't do it justice, it looks nicer in real life. The "glove box" is covered in suede and is red also (not pinkish!) Carpet will cover the trunk floor and the fiberglass wall behind the cockpit and the trunk. New door panels were made, also covered in leather. 14 inch Moto Lita wheel, mounted on original hub, with the Rack and Pinion steering conversion. The gauge pods are wrinkle finish black paint. Driver's seat will be a racing bucket in black vinyl. Both original seats were re-upholstered in red leather. Carbs are original SU's, completely overhauled, with velocity stack intakes and tea strainer "airfilters".
Exhaust will be custom built: headers like original on AC engine and pipe exiting right in front of the rear wheel.
Needless to say, I'm getting pretty anxious to drive this thing.

As I am close to finishing the Aceca, I was just wondering if anyone knows how many of these cars are known to be in existence today. I believe originally only 327 were built, but how many are still around today?

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / Aceca build update

The project came to a halt for a little bit, but is back on the move. All the "dirty" work is done and it is assemble time now. The Head of the engine has been machined, got a Fuel Safe cell made for the car, that should go in today. Awesome painted Dayton wires with period correct tyres. All the aluminum paneling has been made and prefitted. Now cover it with red leather and put the seats in....Lucas Rally lights on the front as well as after market Tripods will be mounted, Ac bumper overriders from Gerry Hawk. Ron has done an awesome job of rebuilding this thing. The Ac Engine got a lot of new goodies from the UK, should make it purr pretty good. I know it won't be performing like a Bristol, but it sure should run well. Check out the tea strainers on my 289 Webers! What a great idea! Now if I could get the damn things to run smooth! I'm putting trumpets on the SU's with the same tea strainers for "airfilters"
The photo quality is not that good this time, more to come. Check out Ron's Real One! Vintage raced for years, 2 log books full, 14:1 compression 427 side oiler with 700 ponies.

I am entered into the Carolina Trophy for this year. Looks like a wonderful event. I know in the years past there have been some AC entries.

Does anyone have for sale or know of someone that wants to part with a set of original magnesium Halibrand wheels for a 427? I know someone that's looking to buy.

General Forum / Aceca rebuild update

My car should be nearing completion in the next month or so. Ron Mack has been doing a great job on the interior paneling. Now that I have all the parts in from the UK the engine is ready to go together. The cylinder liners came out without any trouble. New Connecting rods from Robin Woolmer are fantastic. Excellent pieces of machined metal. Looks like they will fit fine. SU carbs will be back from rebuild this week and will be fitted with velocity intake stacks complete with genuine Tea-strainers!! What a great tip. It looks good and I'm sure will work well. I'm going to fit them on my 289 Webers as well. We had to do some modification on the steering rack supplied by Ben Yates, but it is in and will bolt right up to Nigel Winchester's disc conversion kit. Nice calipers, discs and fantastic caliper carrier. Nicely machined piece. I had the seats re-upholstered. there was no saving this hardened, stinking, cracked up leather with a paint job on it. The driver's seat will b a nice little race bucket. Ron made a fantastic dash out of aluminum sheet, like original with the original gauges mounted. The dash will be covered in red leather, as the seats and the gauge pods will be black wrinkle finish paint. Rod Briggs has a handy inventory of engine parts, such as springs and valves. Altogether this thing will be as good as new when it is all done.

I'm entered into the Carolina Trophy, recently covered in Octane magazine. It may not be a Zagato Aston Martin, but it will stand out!!
More to follow when the build it complete.

General Forum / Tyres for Ace/ Aceca
« on: March 26, 2007, 19:53:35 »
As my Aceca project is moving on and to the assembly stage I would like to ask the racers among you what tyres you're running. I have a set of brand new Dayton wires (15x5.5) to mount them on. The car originally had 16 inchers. The total circumference of the old wheels and tires was 27 inches. Some of the brands I've been looking at are 25 inches or even 24.5. Any suggestions? I don't want to have the thing look silly with the appearance of having mounted wheels off a Mini!!

   Thanks for the help.

I have been trying a few times to get into the members area to pull up some of the available articles, but after log in, the appearance of the Aceca at speed and selecting the model, nothing comes up. Can anyone tell me if I am missing a step?

Does anyone know about reproduction bumper overriders that are the smaller style? the ones that go on the early aces rather then the Cobra models.

   Thanks

Does anyone know of a source for the rubber strip that goes in the rain gutter on the Aceca and for the rear vent window seal? Any alternatives, used for other marques that work?
Any and all suggestions regarding the weatherstripping on the car is welcome.

General Forum / Owner's Photo compilation

While I am spending half of my day posting photos of my Aceca I thought it would be nice to have a thread where all active surfers and hopefully all owners can post a photo of their car or several. What a way to have a database of all owners and cars on the website. Do the registrars have any interest in this?
